it just seemed like in the fathers mind, vanishing would ease the biggest burden off the fl shoulders. sometimes people who are ill or of older age carry guilt with them, and they genuinely believe the absence of their presence is of benefit to you. they don't understand that what is in the others person best interest is to be by their side and help them through these daily challenges. i've dealt with this in real life, which is why i guess i interpreted it that way :)
