Basically this is Zhang Zhehan’s second cameo in Everybody Stand By as Xue Shao (from drama Palace of Desire). His first appearance was in episode 3 when Xue Shao dies in the scene with Princess Taiping.
ZZH is acting in Zhao Wei’s group, where Zhao Wei is directing a short film about 3 actresses competing for the role of Princess Taiping. While casting for the female lead, Zhao Wei tells the 3 actresses that one has to win ZZH’s heart. First actress plays the guitar and sings ZZH a song, but he is too shy to look at her. Zhao Wei jokes that since he is too shy to look at her maybe he should try casting to be a monk in the future 😂. Second actress tells a pick up line joke saying she was poison (if he isn’t around then she got poisoned with loneliness). The 3rd actress Yan Zhuo Ling tops the other two I guess because she tells him she really likes him and surprises him with a kiss.
Actress Yan Zhuo Ling is casted as Jasmin in the short film, she is the character that was in a relationship with ZZH’s character Fei for 4 years. The short film starts with each 3 of the actresses casting for the role of Princess Taiping. Tryout begins with Princess TP looking for sister Wei, finds Xue Shao instead and lifts up the mask he’s wearing. Each actress reacts differently but Xue Shao responds to each with “I think you got the wrong person.”
The director tells the actresses to go home and wait for his decision about choosing the female lead. ZZH’s character Fei is guaranteed the role as Xue Shao. The director wants to sign a 10 year contract with him with a stipulation that he can’t have a girlfriend. When the director asked him which actress he thinks is the best for the Princess Taiping role, he chooses his girlfriend (the 3rd actress whom he describes as showed the truest feeling). The director disagrees because the first two actresses have stronger backgrounds, and Jasmine’s crying is nothing special.
Fei and Jasmine have a date in a hotpot restaurant, where he breaks the news he got the role as Xue Shao. She asks him for a kiss because he will most likely become famous in half a year and will no longer be able to kiss her in public. They enjoyed a long passionate kiss in the restaurant.
They re-enacted the scene, Jasmine tells Fei that she’s very happy that he got the Xue Shao role. Fei tells her if she doesn’t get the Princess Taiping role, he will refuse the Xue Shao role also and change career with her. Jasmine is touched by his words but eventually breaks up with Fei.
The other two actresses Rose and Lilac complains to Fei why can’t one just takes both roles of younger and older Princess TP. The director also complains to Fei that those two actresses complain too much and they are bullying him. Fei (who obviously distraught by the breakup) tells the director he doesn’t want the Xue Shao role anymore. The director tells Fei he can’t handle the consequences if he refuses, calls him crazy, then walks away.
Fast forward to post broadcast of their drama and Fei is now famous from the XS role. He brings his costar and crew to the same hotpot restaurant for celebration. While Fei’s fans swarm him to take pictures, he looks at the beer girl outside the window (she’s covered in a costume from head to toe). He runs outside but finds 3 beer girls dressed in the same costume.
Back inside the restaurant, Jasmine is brought up by the director but Rose and Lilac make fun of Jasmine. It turns out Jasmine went to the director back when casting and refused the role of Princess TP before the director made his decision. The director then mocks Jasmine some more, said she would never have been chosen at all. He asks Fei if he knows Jasmine, Fei denies knowing her. The other crew member also brought up that Jasmine went to him to ensure Fei got the XS role, denied that she was Fei’s gf because she would affect his career. The director asks Fei again if he knows Jasmine, Fei finally confesses that she’s his girlfriend. Fei says he can’t find Jasmine, but if he has a chance to choose again he would not choose the XS role over his girlfriend.
It turns out Jasmine is pouring Fei beer as he confessed his true feeling. He removes her beer costume mask as she cries and tells him he got the wrong person. Fei tries to run after her but his fans got in his way, so he puts on her beer costume mask and continues searching for Jasmine. Fei and Jasmine finds each other, she removes his mask (like in the casting scene) and he asks her for a kiss. She responds “there are people here.” He doesn’t care and gives her a long passionate kiss.
This short film “Mask” was praised by all four directors in Everybody Standby. Director Chan Kaige praised ZZH as an emotional prince with a pair of expressive eyes.

Time will tell, if GJ didn’t orchestra these he at least did not deny using ZZH’s elements. I still believed GJ was sincere when he took out the month August from his 2021 year end video.
