I find most of the award-winning movies are mostly very slow and boring. But this movie is quite enjoyable, although…
I think the most entertaining critically acclaimed goes to Parasite that one is easier to digest for mainstream people. Koreeda, Hamaguchi, Lee chang dong, Hong sang-soo just to name few examples are definitely not for everyone especially Hong sang-soo.
It dives into so many issues but didn't really give absolute solution instead it promotes critical thinking to its viewers which I think is very important. I find those episodes where they have characters with contrast issues just to explore the subject matter brilliant, well written and well directed it's also the reason why I wish it has more time for better characterization especially for the male lead, episode 5 for example is a masterpiece. A deeply profound drama like this will always stay relevant since our world is just a huge extension of this class especially with the advent of social media.
There's a reason why the title Yazuka and the family just think about that for a moment and you would understand this movie better. It's a fresh take compared to dozens of Yakuza films in the past, a bit fast paced but if you know a bit about yakuza, Japanese version of cancel culture or just aware of humanity's default tendency then you would understand each characters action even without the story going deep through it. Last 10 minutes is powerful, well directed, well acted, Fujii Michihito really excels in that.
That restaurant scene in episode 1 when he bring the rookie is soooo clever that it almost made me teared up. This show is not just comedy. It consists of different skits some are really funny and some deeply moving so don't expect the pace and development similar to a normal drama. Having said that it didn't become disjointed in fact there is a theme they followed per episode. Writing is clever, witty and dialogue heavy that sometimes it felt you are watching an indie movie. Characters are just the best their chemistry is insane, Ito family are efforlessly funny. I was thinking of giving this a 9 but that ending is perfectly executed that the drama felt complete in the end.

Does anyone know if the manga available in english?
When you have doraemon and saitama as your savior and just hearing Shiraishi Sei scream Shimobee makes this worth your time, seriously tho just don't take it too seriously it's fun. It's the latest addition to the superhero random but fun nonesense from Japan, just think of detarame hero, Super Salaryman Mr. Saenai or that miss panda kickass inspired dorama.
Reality of life tho this is less brutal compared to some brutally honest romantic movies. There maybe some who may get annoyed with the male lead but I can attest these type of guys exist lol hopeless romantics who won't move on that easy the fact that he's a writer also helps with that character, very realistic portrayal imo. Nao character also exists and friends statement to that kind of person is also spot on, I really like how these 2 characters are written. The ending is not confusing it's pretty much clear to me.
What really annoys me is when a movie with wonderful work by hundreds of other people is treated as some kind…
I always wonder about that minamata I haven't seen it but looks really good. I feel sad for Johnny depp too. I think Japan is the same or even worst on cancelling actors, but you are right that they won't abandon the project. Higashide is pretty much cancelled in Japan (tv network dramas, CM etc.) but because he's unique (good actor + charisma + tall) other independent directors could cast him if they want or even on netflix cause it's audience are not entirely Japanese. Pierre taki is the same he won't work on any television shows anymore but netflix projects can still cast him. Only those who are not that talented that done sh*t are the ones who disappear....most of them are idols.
The most positive feel good Jdrama that is not an asadora, there might be some scenes I didn't like like that scene near the end of episode 8, it's too soapish for me the way it happen, but I guess that just represents the blow this pandemic gave us and how humanity dealt with it. Character struggles atleast for the main ones is a reflection of it, the main theme is so strong that you would feel it from beginning to end. The writing has so much depth and sincerity, no sugarcoating of words almost brutal but honest.
It's the first time I've seen a Jdrama that have these female characters, straighforward who speaks their mind but not on the pushy side, and that's what the male character(manato) needs, an almost zombie character who had a very dark traumatic past. I like Arimura's character here, it's the first time I've seen her in such a role and she nailed it but to me it's Hayashi Kento who owned this show, he's really good with this type of roles. Watch it if you like slice of life like how Japan does it, meaningful dialogues, random but fun characters, heavy use of symbolism, the difference is romance is more prevalent than others.
I don't know but I don't see Kase romatically in love with Rio based on what I saw. I really hope we did get more of his backstory cause it's still confusing for me, how could he just agree with the father in the first crime. As for the drama the mystery is good but not as thrilling as N no Tame ni for comparison, the chemistry for the main lead is a lot better tho, collectively the acting is also better. Tanaka Minami for example had very good complicated character and she played it really well, I think she's underrated actress like Matsumoto Marika.
Good and fun drama though it may appear as a huge product placement of a show they made sure to connect the place/food to the lives of each character like how otoko meshi did it (another fun drama btw same vibe). But this feels more complete and relatable as they explored different relationships and situations. Lastly this drama has so much youth energy the opening and ending is brilliant. I like the creativity of this director Matsumoto Soushi...best eps 4, 6, 7, 9, 12.
In terms of production quality this could be the best WOWOW has offered which means the best in Japan and yes even counting those on netflix this is just pure art. Unique atmosphere, strong theme with thrilling soundtrack, acting is also very good. Matsushige Yutaka is very effective as a villain. That combo of Takahata Mitsuki and Sumire just works, Mitsuki with her strong acting performance and Sumire's screen presence galore.

I still don't know the story behind the movie but the audition seems real.
