If your oppa has decided to star in a historical/period fiction piece and it’s indigestible to your sensibilities, don’t watch it. Wait for Oppa to get cast in a romcom to play a green flag who lets an aegyo-ing insufferable botoxed to the high heavens middle aged female lead troll the guy for 16 episodes. No. The Baek’s are fictionalised story telling tools to show the tug of war of that era in the corridors of power and how ill gotten gains seeped into the blue house n-1. All the president’s men got down to dirty business just to please, appease and survive in power. There are multiple storytelling tools being used in this show. The predominant one is not naming real people or historical figures . Instead making fictional characters and combining a hybrid of all those real life suckers and brown nosing civil or military servicemen and women to tell a story set in that time. You must be 12 to not already understand how historical fiction is written/told. It’s not a documentary. It’s a historical “fictional” period “drama”. “Fictional” and “drama” being keywords here.
As someone who has studied history and reads a lot of global and regional history- it helps to follow and anticipate the storylines of this show both season 1 and 2. Not that it’s necessary to study or go through Wikipedia pages of South Korean history or that decade of doom but it makes the watch even more interesting and enjoyable. I love this show. I’m already giving it a 9 stars rating

I think either Kihyun will kill himself (self exit) or he will be killed by the brother KiTae or someone on his own side of the military command cos they only see him as a rat. And are only entertaining him cos he’s the pawn they (the powers that be) have to bring down the KiTae camp to secure their hold on power. Something about Kihyun gives me this sinking feeling and Woo Do Hwan 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻 the young man captures the claustrophobic suffocation of his character’s contained anxieties and the sense of feeling cornered to perfection. His character doesn’t speak much but his face is telling the story. Woo Do Hwan is the best in the younger lot of Korean actors who really nail each character they play.
Mo Tae Gu 🤌🏻 Kim Jaeuck hardly had 1.5 hour of screen time in the overall show of 16 episodes, but he was so good. Not a hair out of place in his portrayal.
Okay I will watch it for the man Jang Hyuk. However, I must say, Lee Hyun Wook’s hair looks off. It looks so obviously modern. Sigh! Anyway, is it a hill to die on when you have a potential epic novel style sageuk to watch ? Not really. Let’s hope it’s done right. So far, my favourite sageuk has been My Country. Apart from some post production choices in the editing room, the drama was perfection. And it also starred Jang Hyuk as Bangwon. 🤌🏻
