The characters are human cultivators, so they have to deal with not being OP becos nobody has 10 000 years of cultivation and apparently have to deal with world crisis by themselves.
I love this setting. It also explores through the leads' eyes, what it means for a human to desire to be immortal? What do they have to lose doing so etc...
deng kai has got to stop taking these villain roles. I’m tired to hating his characters but he plays the villain…
Its very rare for me, but I actually enjoy seeing him on screen. He is not the detestable villain here... he's more of a person who seems to want to prove himself but just kept missing the mark. At least I don't FF his scenes compared to how I usually do for dramas when villains appear lol

Time really was running too fast in the flashback... but I suppose from the drama pov they were already hitting ep8 and cannot dally in the past for too long. As an audience I was torn between seeing more of what happened with MQG and SYS but I also wanted to get back to the present day to see what will happen with Ranran and SYS lol
In the novel the 'war' was much longer... it was at least months... MQG also had to secretly help SYS extract the Demonic entity over a much longer time but drama reduced it to like instant extraction XD But from drama storytelling point, if its flashback, they wanted to do in a block, because novel can jump back whenever but probably look very messy on the whole if drama was to do the same...
I was turned off by the forcing and cheating him to be her disciple too, just because she thought she was saving…
Actually she didn't decide on her own that he was evil? Didn't the two old men who were her friends who are great cultivators/immortal? actually told her about the arrival of the demon's child which she could 'use' as her last act of great merit to tally up her 'total score' and ascend as immortal. She ran into SYS (by design of fate and plot of cos) and identified him because of that stone thing. If she just killed him off right there, ( we have no drama ) and she would have 'saved the world'.
Mu Qingge took the long hard road, to reform him by making him take care of cute furry pets, learn music, vent his killing energy by trying to kill her daily for over 3 years. I think it didn't go against her character setting but proved that is exactly how she is as a person. In the face of the greater good, she felt even his one life was worth saving, since he showed a glimmer of kindness by sparing the young child.
It's just super unfortunate that when she finally was nearing success, of course there are outer elements that screwed everything up... and she decided to die on his behalf. And then we have our drama hahaha
