To Bright's defence I'd like to share this video of Bright in his earlier acting career in 2018. The project director, a senior member of the crew, was impressed with Bright's acting skills, his confidence, and his choices of roles, in an audition. Bright has been casted as Male Leads 7 times now in less than 3 years, since 2018, by different directors for different genres. So, within the profession, Bright is considered a competent and diverse enough actor to hold multiple important roles. That doesn't mean he's stellar, I'm certain there are plenty of actor more skillful and have more potential than Bright. But he's not sub par. His acting is recognized in the profession.
But I do agree with you that there are a lot of flaws in the series itself.
I'm seriously looking forward to MOD, that it will be a good BL series. I'm guessing it's MaxTul, so it can't go wrong. Plus I've also read abit of the novel, and it's a good read.
There's currently like 10 ongoing BLs airing now, but none of them are any good except a few. I dropped 3 already and am contemplating dropping some more. But that's just me, someone else may be enjoying them.

The storylines are totally different. Imitation is an adaptation of the webtoon 'Imitation' whereas BOF is an adaption of the manga 'Hana Yori Dango' Even the number and types of main leads are different. Imitation has 2FLs and 3MLs. BOF has 1FL and 4MLs.

But as far as I can tell, the MDL details above seems neither like the manga 'hana yori dango', nor the korean drama BOF.
However, this still doesn't clarify how 'imitation' can be equated as the 'new BoF'.
