I know that story wise this isn't a show that was trying to copy Squid Game, since 1) Death Game has existed as a concept for a long time, and a lot of things that are similar between the two are because of that and 2) Money Game and Pie Game existed before the release of Squid Game, but I do think people who get a Squid Game vibe are valid, largely because a lot of the technical/show specific parts are similar.
Think things like the use of classical music against a contrasting scene (yes, I know this is a technique that exists, but it stuck out to me), costume design with number uniforms, the set design with the plasticity objects made to resemble something normally innocent (like an amusement part, or a children's game), the fake simulation of day and night and a vast communal area , - which is different from how it was conceptualized in the manhwa. It almost feels like a lot of creative decisions Netflix had say in they deliberately pushed so that it could generate hype by being compared to Squid Game.
I wouldn't be surprised if they did, it would make sense for marketing (literally look it up and you'll immediately get articles talking about the two), but it's a shame because it's actually quite different from Squid Game in a lot of ways. If people go in expecting Squid Game, they are going to be disappointed which I think is going to have an effect on the reviews.
I'm not that far in so I don't want to speak too much on this, and my opinion may change later (I'm not even sure if I like it at this point) but I did take a look at the manhwa/source material to make sure I wasn't making unfair comparisons. It really does feel like the production team was influenced by Squid Game. Or at least pushed by Netflix to be, even if the original story isn't tied to it in any way.
Begging Lee Soo Yeon to stick to writing realism. Shouldn't have given her a second chance at sc-fi after the mess that was grid. And we were doing so well too T^T
yall have to watch this movie with good subtitles - I beg you to wait until the official translation is available to make judgement. I watched this once online with meh subtitles and then luckily was able to see it in theaters and let me tell you it makes a world of difference. It's like an entirely different movie.

They're different accidents - we can tell since the victims had different names, and because he gets the money he stashed in that life. But overall it seems to be in order? Considering his lives are able to pass the money to each other
so I know it would contradict two of the main rules of death's game that a) death's are happening in a chronological order and b) Yi Jae isn't allowed to kill himself in the other lives but I'm kinda convinced that the officer worker who ran into the street and got hit by a car when Yi Jae was in college is also one of the lives he is going to live.
Like first, that guy was so determined to get hit - you don't normally see someone run from their office building into the road, and second the show put emphasis on Yi Jae being like 'this is all this guys fault, if only it wasn't for him' so I feel like a twist of 'it was you all along who ruined your own life' would fit with the show.

Jumping in as someone who is a big fan of Joon Hyuk - 365:Repeat the Year is crazy good. Lots of twists, gripping plot, and his character is great (it's what got me into him). It's my second favorite drama of all time (and I say this as someone who has watched 400+ of them). Cannot recommend it enough!! I've written a full review on it on my profile if you're curious :)
