Cai Zhao (FL) is from Luoying Valley. They have a reputation of producing "demonesses" (basically female ancestors who had rebelled or did something against the norm). This trend was finally broken by her aunt, Cai Pingshu, a talented, famous heroine who became a role model to everyone across the martial arts world. She was a strong influence in Cai Zhao's childhood upbringing until she passed away three years ago.
In the martial arts world, there's a total of Six Sects that are united against their common enemy (the Demonic Sect), with Qinque Sect being the leading sect of the Six Sects. Her parents make her go to Qinque Sect to become an apprentice and learn martial arts from the Qinque Sect leader, Qi Yunke.
While en route in sending her to Qinque Sect, they receive news that one of the Six Sects (Chang Fort) had been attacked, so they immediately go help. Unfortunately, when they arrive, everyone is already dead except for Chang Ning (ML), the son of Chang Fort's sect leader. He is heavily injured and taken to Qinque Sect to heal.
While at Qinque Sect, Cai Zhao discovers that Chang Ning is often bullied by fellow Qinque Sect apprentices, so she steps in as his protector. As Cai Zhao spends more time with Chang Ning, she suspects that there could be more to him -- like maybe a hidden motive or even a hidden identity. She also learns that there could be more hidden, dangerous secrets regarding what actually happened during the previous generation, including her own aunt's life story.

Lol, I've started avoiding spoilers from the teasers so that watching the remaining eps will be more thrilling not knowing what to expect. Sadly I ended up getting some spoilers anyway bc of scrolling thru X lololol sigh

I think he was in on the plan ever since she confessed to potentially dying with the ML (during that scene where she's finally eating again). He knew she would try to rescue MQY and therefore would need weapons.
