abuse is not romance.

Whether out of complicity, condoned, or ignored - Everyone associated with the male lead abused the female lead. Exactly like in the original; a matching revenge-marriage-plot, with ongoing kidnapping and imprisonment story-line the mainstay. But, unlike the original, there are no repercussions. Though there is a shift in blind loyalties in support characters, there is silence from our unrepentant male lead. Those drunken floor scenes are some of the best, albeit time waste, wallowing in self-pity moments I've ever seen come from an abusive male character. Add the cringe-worthy suffering second female lead's pity-fest in culpability, and this remake becomes the 'sniveling version'. "Barb Rak Ta Lay Fun" is a toxic and venomous cruel mess under the guise of revenge. A depressing remake of a bad drama. Not recommended.

rape is not romance.

Rape in a romcom and fandom. Male lead's motivation not an excuse. The female lead's reaction is not open to interpretation. The more watchers debate, the more I want to point out sexual assault by the male lead is not punishment, or love, but criminal. To think a character (FL) has it coming to right a wrong, is an odd way to defend a drama. Both the writer and director should have adapted; rape is not romance, and does not belong in the romance genre. Avoid.

FL: "Saying sorry will it make it any better? If someone were to rape you and say sorry. Will you forgive them?"

rape is not romance

That did not belong there. I still don't understand why the writer was so moved to escalate blind-jealously to rape. It did little but create a 'what the hell', 'no they didn't', 'wait - what?' moment. Because, the scene ends in a consensual second pairing. There is so much going on in this series that that one moment negates one of the craziest second female leads. An off-the-rails mystery - Complete with redemption and revenge plots, you will shake your head at. On the writer, shame on you. Rape is not romance, and doesn't belong in the romance genre. Avoid.

rape is not romance.

Shades of sexual assault. A traumatic past rape of the female lead, with someone trusted. Later, kidnapped by one of the most toxic male lead characters ever created; She is then chained, imprisoned, and raped by him. Who incidentally, just happens to be the female lead's first rapist's brother-in-law (ML). What kind of karma is that? In this drama, the romantic choice would have been 'second male lead syndrome' - it doesn't change the outcome by yelling this at the screen though. I tried. Obviously, rape in all its shades of criminality is not romance, and does not belong in the romance genre. Avoid.

note: Avoid this original, watch the remake.

rape is not romance.

Original sin and the parent story. Where the 1990's-fashion is outdated, and rape is not. Since then, adapted twice (2019, 2006) with only the costumes and sets updated. Though, I'm pretty sure directors knew this when they made the male lead a rapist in all 3 versions; 'Rape to romance' is an outdated story-line and violent mindset. But still, in 2019, 2006, and in this original from 1990; modern screen-writers and 3 production teams failed viewers perpetuating 'rape culture' on screen. Unneeded in a story line then, and still not needed - Rape is not romance, and does not belong in the romance genre. Avoid.

rape is not romance.

When you're convinced the male lead might drown, looking up in a rain storm with his mouth open - But, sadly, that didn't happen here. Instead, sexual assault was the outcome, and pregnancy the result. There is no rhyme or reason for the male lead to rape the female lead. Nothing. But, then the 2021 remake is consensual only in that the female lead didn't know he was actually punishing her, degrading her, and raping her by omission. This criminal. Both awkward. Both male leads bastards. Both (2021, 2005) male lead roles some of the stupidest characters ever written (i.e. paternity), playing in one of the most toxic stories I've watched even without rape add-on. Rape is not romance, and doesn't belong in the romance genre. Avoid.

rape is not romance.

The deviants, the avenger, and mommy dearest. What better way to make an evil mom acknowledge the tortured male lead's existence than revenging his own clueless teen half-sister. While the female lead makes a sad uninformed cameo appearance at the happy siblings engagement party. This is where the deviants step-in under the disguise of director and writer - providing some much needed last-minute on-screen main couple time and segue into parenthood. With a criminal kidnapping at the party, complete with rape of the female lead by the male lead.

This is a revenge plot that doesn't include the female lead. This had budding romance where a stranded night of stargazing would have been enough. There was no reason to include that in story. Rape is not romance, and does not belong in the romance genre. Avoid.

rape is not romance.

This was a train-wreck in degradation by everyone to the female lead. The first rape by the male lead horrific, and a violent introduction to the most cowardly and vicious group of characters ever to grace a drama. And, we haven't gotten to the bad-guys yet. Misunderstandings do not account for the silence, outright lies and sanctioned treatment spilling over into everyone's bad behavior toward her. To the point; no matter what the female lead did, she was never going to be human. And, in her moment of escape - Real family and friends turn-on-her to judgement. Using their influence to bring it home; her life is ruined because she's pregnant by her abuser. The last act of cowardice of all these unrepentant characters - A surprise wedding with her rapist, the psycho male lead. Rape is not romance, and doesn't belong in the romance genre. I hope this never gets remade. Avoid.

rape is not romance.

No visible rape tag- That hidden designation comes into play. I went in trusting. So, toxic. So, insane. The gossip-mongers, misunderstandings, betrayers and jealousy burying the maligned female lead until the male lead planned the rape and executed it. The rape is off screen. That is until the director used the full version as fond memories in later episodes as flashbacks. Rape is not romance, and doesn't belong in the romance genre. Avoid.

Note; there are two rapes in this series - The female lead's bestie and the female lead. Let me point out, sexual assault was given weight in the story between the women, but in the end both ended up in a relationship with their criminal attackers. And, what was supposed to be a strong female lead was essentially dumbed down to absolution of sins (undeserved) by her rapist in the last moments of the finale. Black, turns to pink? Please.

rape is not romance.

Seduction, jealousy and lies take our female lead from overseas homecoming and traumatic cheating fiance, into the clutches of conniving sister and insane brother act 'toxic team entitled'. Where bystander silence masks inhumanity, male lead anger justifies sexual assault, and female lead family-stupidity unconscionable results. Abused mentally and physically by the male lead, both lead's families, friends, and employees - The female lead spends most of this drama being everyone's scapegoat, punching bag and misjudged victim. The male lead's words below, clinched this review. Rape is not romance, and does not belong in the romance genre. Avoid.

ML: "Or do you want to rape me too? Just like how I did to you is fine." The male lead says smiling, trying to get the female lead to take him back.

rape is not romance.

Whether out of silence, sanctioned, or direct involvement - Everyone associated with the male lead abused the female lead. The difference between this and the 2017 version, is the rape (2005). But, unlike that remake with matching kidnapping and imprisonment story-line, 2005 had some repercussions. Where there is a shifting of blind loyalties amongst associates and some onscreen remorse from the male lead rapist himself. Maddening as it is, the culpable second female lead in both versions denied any knowledge of the female lead's abuse, right up, and until, the second female lead's own happy ending. But, even with redemption, rape is not romance and doesn't belong in the romance genre. Avoid.

Uneccesary remake, of a dated story-line.

The settling of a debt: the sins of the father laid upon one child. One punishment for having jerks for parents? Selling off your child and future grandchild in an all-in-one human trafficking moment. But then, both families were 'a piece of work' in both versions (2001, 2015) of this drama.

I do appreciate they toned down little sis' need to be the male lead's mistress in this version. Though early cringe moments can be heard as inappropriate shadows, left in dialog. As for the 2001 original rape scene; 2015 same scene, slightly consensual context (FL touches ML's back in fadeout), & same outcome. A bad remake, of a dated story-line. Not recommended.

rape is not romance.

Rape and the self-righteous man. Born in the obsessed 'holier-than-thou' male lead's mind, everyone's sins, and misfortunes lead back to the female lead. Unfortunately for the female lead the male lead's punishments of choice; mental abuse, verbal attack, physical and sexual assault. While the female lead's only saving grace is Stockholm syndrome, a plucky personality, and vivid daydreams. It takes a very screwed-up village (in story & discussion) to rush to judgement over 'a synopsis' that declares; a virgin man-eater, and her rapist; a handsome up-right and a religious (in story) pillar of the community, and not, the violent criminal that he really is. Rape is not romance, and it doesn't belong in the romance genre. Avoid.

The actors were amazing, and I will follow their work in the future.

There is no moment that doesn't propel this story forward. No moment that doesn't involve you in a complete love story. No moment that doesn't engage you in solving a good mystery. And, all done in under 10 minute increments in twenty fast-paced episodes, you will want to binge. Because, it is that good.

While longer and bigger budgeted drama couples can be stuck in limbo until the last 10 minutes of the finale. Here, "Destined to Meet You" runs the full loving and romantic relationship gambit - With a bulletproof power-couple and a mystery that keeps you guessing right up to the final reveal. Highly recommended.

soft porn and boring horror

Note: Horror was only added to legitimize the pron* scenes. The writer, did neither well.

After Dark will embarrass you whether watching alone, or in a group. It neither titillates, nor scares. It's embarrassing and not for the sexual content. Personal, cringe-worthy moments are built into most episodes; where, you feel for the actor, or a scene that just hurts to much to watch. With a story that is confusing, repetitive, and cliche-driven starting in episode one. You eventually wish it would just be over, and the actors could move on to better scripts.

Horror and supernatural fans avoid like the plague - A really bad plague film would be better than this. The rest of you not so familiar with the genres, this series is soft porn and boring horror. There are better films and series out there. Avoid.
