It's called a tragedy. The worst kind of regret in life are those that you can never reconcile.
I've watched enough Chinese dramas to pay close attention to every line because it's never wasted but used to tell the story or foreshadow of things to come.
He really does have the air of Han Ting.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Os79JzqMXc
someone posted: During an interview when asked about the most memorable scene, #XuKai thought for a moment & said, "It must be the scene where Han Ting & Ji Xing get married. They are running on the square with pigeons by their side.

There were clues. I recall YZM having some fond memories of his father playing with him when he as a little kid. MCH had explained everything to YZM, so he realized his father had changed, but it's not clear that YZM ever forgave his dad.
I’m captivated by Xu Kai’s range of rich, natural, evocative and nuanced micro expressions because he conveys them with such elegance and ease. Every still frame reveals a unique aspect of his portrayal. The smallest shift in expression can capture the complexities of human emotion. Without sound, it is revealed how well an actor can express themselves on screen and whether their acting can still evoke emotions and connect with the audience. https://x.com/i/status/1793925807167127910
You can see from his MDL page. He must be a sought-after costume designer. Blossoms in Adversity, AJTL, SOKP, The Rise of Phoenixes, Scarlett Heart, The Long Ballad, Mysterious Lotus Casebook, Love and Redemption, Who Rules the World, etc.
Also, the director for this drama doesn't seem to have a lot of experience but I noticed he is the son of a very famous writer in China, Hai Yan who is "generally considered one of China's most popular screenwriters". This director is 44 yrs. old, and this drama is almost like his first work in a very long time. But that's okay. you never know. Maybe he took this on because he was inspired by the genre.
It seems to me they did a good job casting the main leads for this drama. Also, this genre is new and fascinating for both leads. I hope the comedy is subtle and the tone dark that fits the sinister nature of this story.
MZY has dual nature. He also has a dark side to him that may be violent and dangerous.
"Mei Zhu Yu is 21 yrs. old, alert, calm, dignified, and sinister. His long-term secluded life has made him develop an indifferent and focused personality. His world almost colorless (lack of emotional connection). However, at critical moments, he will transform into a fierce and murderous heavenly master, free, natural, and sinister attributes."
His transformation from a calm and dignified individual to a fierce and murderous heavenly master indicates a dual nature, where his true power and potential are revealed in moments of crisis. The colorless world he inhabits could symbolize a lack of emotional connection or vibrancy in his life, which may fuel his darker traits.
Based on the first four chapters in the link above, Mei Zhu Yu has a STOIC personality due to his ability to remain…
The novel starts off with a STOIC AND STERN LOOKING Taoist priest who can sit all day long totally focused on stacks of boring paperwork, and not aroused by sudden movements. Mei Zhuyu is 22 yrs old, a LONER. "It’s said that a FEW YEARS ago, his parents passed away, leaving him ALONE in Quzhou to observe the mourning rites, returning to Chang'an only a year ago". That means HE SPENT A FEW YEARS IN SOLITUDE" until a year ago. "HE'S A RESERVED PERSON" with a "STABLE PERSONALITY" who hold the position of deputy in the Minister of Punishments (depressing job). Mei is VERY FOCUSED and NOT AROUSED.
"Perhaps sensing something, Deputy Minister Mei, who was working at the desk, suddenly turned his head, looking towards the window. It happened to coincide with the calico cat on the tung tree branch outside. Seeing the scene of the calico cat pressing down the tong flowers, Deputy Minister Mei SHOWED NO SURPRISE. He CALMLY WATCHED the cat sway with the wind along with the tung flower branches. If she had to choose a word to describe him, it would probably be UPRIGHT. His GAZE WAS CALM AND INDIFFERENT, his EXPRESSION CLEAR WITH A HINT OF SHARPNESS. This sharpness wasn’t the cold fierceness of a drawn sword but rather a COLD SOLEMNITY unique to someone in charge of punishments. Seeing the SERIOUS DEMEANOR of this husband of hers, Wu Zhen inwardly sighed. To be honest, she was least adept at dealing with someone who looked SO SERIOUS. Most people take a break after working for a while, go out to get some fresh air, and chat with colleagues. This Deputy Minister Mei, however, SEEMED DIFFERENT. He HADN'T MOVED SINCE SITTING DOWN, his brush never resting, and the pile of papers on the table kept growing.
"Expression clear with a hint of sharpness" can also come across as somewhat stiff or rigid. An upright expression can sometimes appear stiff, especially when it conveys a sense of unwavering seriousness or moral rectitude.
Based on the first four chapters in the link above, Mei Zhu Yu has a STOIC personality due to his ability to remain focused and undisturbed by external distractions or internal emotions, showcasing a level of self-discipline and calmness that aligns with the philosophical principles of stoicism. He embodies the stoic virtues of wisdom, temperance, and justice, especially in his role at the Minister of Punishments, and his personal history suggests a life lived with resilience and INNER TRANQUILITY.
Stoic characters often maintain a consistent demeanor. While this can enhance authenticity, it may appear repetitive in short clips. A stoic character, by nature, is expected to have a controlled and consistent demeanor, which can be misinterpreted as lacking expression, especially in a brief clip. In a short clip, the subtle nuances that indicate the character’s inner life may not be apparent, leading to a perception of a lack of expression. The depth of a stoic character’s expressions is often found in the subtleties that build up over time. In the context of a full drama, repetitive expressions may serve to reinforce the character’s personality and emotional state. Viewers may need more exposure to the character to appreciate the restrained style of acting. What might seem like a fixed expression in a clip could, in the full context, be a deliberate and nuanced performance.
So, this teasing is not even an act for a scene but only their behind-the-scenes playfulness, and the serious one is the actual scene? It's good to know they have chemistry bts. https://x.com/i/status/1792382043776782820
