Reading the serious comments below, I just want to say that life in this drama had to be far better than reality in those days, the drama is just reflecting what really happened in those dynasties. Everyone is just trying to survive everyday.

I get why some people don't like the fl because she is so serious but that is her character here. I think she played her character well.

There is a lot of comedy in this drama as well as more serious moods.

On Douban, SAF6 got perfect 10's from 14% of the users which is decent when you look across other dramas with even higher ratings. The perfect percentage should probably be more like 20% if not for the huge volume of passerby low ratings of 1's and 2's from people who probably didn't even watch it. This drama may not be everyone cup of tea, and there is so much for people to pick at, but the high number of perfect scores shows that there are lot of people who love it.

the fact that this drama got a Douban 3.2 with 69% hating it just shows that Xu Kai charm connects more with viewers outside of China. He just has this way about him that is unique among his Chinese peers.

Yang Mi probably has always been skinny. XK says she can eat a lot and not get fat.
As for XK, I hope he doesn't lose any more weight. I think a person looks more youthful, more expressive, healthier, less wrinkles, have a glow when have some fat on their face. As you get older, you look back at yourself in your 20's and then you realized you want that fat back.

WoL received almost 21% perfect 10's on Douban. Comparatively speaking, that is pretty good. The percentage was probably more like 23% given that Xu Kai has a lot of haters.
This is a very sentimental drama that tugs at your heart.

WOL is XK best Douban overall score 6.8, and top perfect 10 scores 20.7%. Yanxi Palace only got 15.7% perfect 10 and XK was only a side character who stole the audience hearts as a newcomer.

It's been a long time since I watched this drama, but this is a very sweet, lovely, and very tender drama; and so fun to watch, so many funny scenes.

I enjoyed Xu Kai's chemistry with the fl, and esp. the chemistry with the sfl who is pretty and a very good actress. XK seems to connect really well with more mature women and men too.
I like the fl too. i think she is a very good actress, I love her role in AMA. She should have gotten best supporting actress in that role. she was really good in Court Lady too.
I wished I could find a clip of XK with the sfl - the dialogue is so good between them.
XK is so good at comedy but I think he needs to do serious roles to showcase his talent.
XK talent is having to show deep emotions and soulful exchanges. He has a way of giving that look that says it all whatever emotion is required.

Of course, Xu Kai did not carry this drama because there are a lot of other characters the drama has to devote to. It's not just about the main characters. There were a lot of good acting besides Xu Kai in this drama. Perhaps this is generally true, but for sure with Xu Kai, he is unique, and any other actor would totally change the dynamics of the drama, it would not be the same drama at all. I'm not saying that it would be worst but different and perhaps better, but it would not be the same. Xu Kai has a unique style so when you put a different actor in the same role, the entire dynamics will change. This is true for a lot of his dramas, esp. AMA, Fuca Fuheng, FIYS, WOL, SAF6, and SHPH.. no one can replace his characters in those roles without changing the feeling of drama.

Her picture on MDL shows her very large round doll-like eyes. She's very pretty girl, big beautiful captivating smile and dimples too. She's got good height at 5'6 and slender figure.

Chen Xiao (25) is XK youngest fl. Tian Xiwei (26) would be his second youngest fl.

Why don't you watch ep 18 first? If you know what is going through Jinzhao's mind especially when he is looking and talking to Qi, then you know what a masterful job Xu Kai did. It is through Xu Kai and Esther's acting that I can pick up the nuances of the character what they must be thinking and feeling, I really enjoy the acting of the entire cast in this drama.

Since you're telling us, I'm curious why you must force yourself? There are over 10M people who have watched this drama, If you don't watch it, it will be fine.

I once heard XK in an interview when asked about billing, he said he doesn't care about those things. If he doesn't care, why should the fans care?

Why do people who don't like Xu Kai past dramas always start out by telling us that they love Xu Kai?

I don't understand why people want perfect endings where everyone can live happily ever after. After you watch the drama, you forget. The less perfect endings are more interesting and memorable like in this drama, someone died that I did not expect and because it was one of my favorite characters in the drama, I will always remember that person in this drama because the death seemed so unfair.

Why do people think they know better than Xu Kai what roles he should or should not take on? Xu Kai only turned 29 and still has a lot of years to make more dramas. Chinese people tend to look at least 5 yrs. younger than their real age, and then you add the makeup, they can have long careers.

Ratings are subjective. There are no criteria. You can rate a drama down for any reason you feel like it. Some dramas instantly draw you in but then after a while you lose interest because it's the same old thing throughout (40 episodes!), and some dramas are hard to tell by just watching a trailer or a few episodes because the story may be complicated and doesn't' come together until you watched the whole thing, and then you may need to rewatch some of it, if you're still interested in the plot, esp. when censorship causes editing mishaps. MDL tends to have a lot of Xu Kai haters. I'm not sure if they all flock to Viki too, but the ratings tend to be higher on Viki, it's 9.1 on Viki. For MDL, comparatively speaking, I feel this drama deserves 8.0 to 8.2. The flawed characters are interesting, and one can learn a lot of life lessons from them. I especially remember how the ml was trying to decide if he should go down that path knowing it would lead to nothing, and the response from his Master was interesting. There are lot of profound things said that I want to quote from this drama. I enjoy the fighting scenes which feels realistic (more fun to watch than bad CGI that most dramas put out). I know how hard Xu Kai worked on his spear techniques so I wanted to see him perform it, even though he feels he should have done better, of course being biased, I thought he was great. These actors are not professional and only train on the job for couple of months, then they don't pick it up again. Xu Kai said the director told him, other actors can use special effects except him, he has to do it all himself and only if the move require a professional then they have someone else do it, but then in the end, all his efforts, the postproduction sure edited out so much that some fans don't recognize that it's him doing it.
I feel there is pretty good chemistry overall among the cast, but the finest chemistry and most interesting relationship was between the ml and his Master.
