I hope people give a balanced characterization of Cui Lin. I realized that everyone’s opinions are subjective but she's getting such a bad rap and some of the comments are rather harsh like calling her a b*tch. Actually, I was also influenced by these negative comments since I'm so behind.

throughout the movie, they have many chats and open up about their past feelings for each other.

I saw the interview. Xu kai said lemon because it started out sour. Then Jing tian said pineapple, much to Xu Kai's delight that she came up with a good example, because pineapple is very sweet on inside and has those prickly things on the outside that represents the way Cui Lin can be towards Li Ni. She said prickly because Cui Lin likes to tease Li Ni.

Oh afterthought. maybe Xu Kai was thinking of needles when jing Tian said "prickly". I kept wondering why he was so astonished by it.

I apologize if I offended you, but you gave so many clues that you won't enjoy WoL. 1. Xu kai has only had one movie SEL aired in 2023 prior to WoL, and you said all his movies are meh this year - does that include WoL? What does SEL have to do with WoL? 2. you don't care for Jing Tian acting and can't imagine her as a fl when she has been acting for a very long time as fl in many movies, your biased toward her may negatively impact you from enjoying WoL 3. you can't get into the love story, 4. the plot is boring 5 After four episodes, you stopped watching.
These clues you gave out are stacked against you already, so I thought you should not waste your time. It just felt like you have a pretty good idea yourself. I think most people watch a movie more than anything, the story is key to whether they will stick with a movie or not. If you already find the plot boring, I doubt you will want to stick with it. WoL the plot is pretty predictable for me anyway, right off the bat, because I can tell after the first episode what type of movie this will be and how it will go. I had hoped that it was serious movie, but it is rather light-hearted, perhaps a bit too light-hearted for me, but I still have motivations to watch.
Actually, I wonder how do you know the love story is boring? For me, it took many episodes to understand the characters, why they love each other, and I'm still learning as I'm not done with the movie yet. In fact, I had to watch ep 15/16 a few times to understand the complicated emotions in those scenes. Now they are one of my favorite scenes. The emotions were so raw and powerful to me.

I only mention it because you brought up AJTL. It was told to me not to compare movies but for some reason I've seen people come here to compare SOKP and now AJTL. I have seen comments some find the relationship dominant/subordinate but I think the comment is a bit harsh. , only because I love the actress, her quality of acting is way above everyone else, so she is able to make this character likable. The "mature" topic (baby out of wedlock, sexual relations before marriage) of AJTL relationship is different than WoL (traditional or old-fashioned relationship; however, I doubt Li Ni and Cui lin will abide by traditions. Li Ni will cook, sew, fix toys, change diapers, etc.). The SML in AJTL gives out a ton of advice on how to deal with women. I recall another scene, he told ML to pamper women so then they nicer to you (something like that). I definitely agree the relationship in AJTL is much more matured. But the characters are older and more experienced and lived a different life than in WoL, there was reference to them as "kids". I think they are supposed to be young people in 20's as opposed to 30's in AJTL, so you hope that characters in AJTL is more matured. Both of them have had other partners or relationships before, especially the FL she is a seductress. IN WoL, Lii Ni and Cui Lin is the first love for them. They are still learning and growing with each other, and they will never know any other love partner, unlike in AJTL, those two are experienced.

I finally found a great actress. LSS in AJTL. She is exceptional. Her eye expressions, face expressions, her depth of emotions, her beauty and grace, I don't see many that can compare to her. She is definitely a top tier actress, Her talent is award winning.

You should definitely not waste your time. Why bother to ask when you already know the answer?

Ep 30
Pei Yuan to Li Ni: "At the very beginning, I had an opinion of Lady Cui. But after observing, I realized that she is a good person. She's considerate and always plans for you. The most important thing is she never claimed credit for herself".

Unfortunately, there will be more misunderstandings. Li Ni will misunderstand her again, but hard to fault him. It's just that these conflicts they have sometimes are out of their control. I've seen comments that I think you may be disappointed in fl again in later scenes. However, they have a deep connection to each other that allows them to always reconcile back together. These tensions also allow for kiss and makeup scenes to release (sexual) tension between them.

In AJTL, Ruyi is seducing ML to have a baby out of wedlock. ML is very uncomfortable. ML has no idea how to court her and SML has to constantly give him advice. As one of many other examples throughout the movie he gives woman advice, he tells ML, "You have to make her jealous. She needs to be possessive of you. She asked you for help, you say you don't have time. If she gives you something, just pretend to mention it by accident. IF she ever approaches another man again, you just walk out the door, tell her you're upset, the deal to have a baby out of wedlock is off. She's met a lot of men but once a woman has a heart for him, that would be different, so these TRICKS will work on her." Ruyi is strong, independent, and mature. She is trying to seduce ML and is domineering, physical, and aggressive toward him and other men. Later she softens up when she sees his kindness and love. In AJTL, the women also are resourceful resorting to needles and powder too.

Also at this point in the movie, Cui Lin has no idea that LCF has evil intentions toward Li Ni. OK, so the betrayal can be seen as evil act but he made an excuse, so Cui Lin thinks he did a very bad thing, but that's not the same as intentionally trying to hurt Li Ni.

But she didn't care if he saves her life or not that day. She was willing to die that day and feels guilty that LCF died instead. By saving her, he created an emotional wreck for her. He needed to save her as a pawn to negotiate with her father so that was one reason (but I know deep down in his heart, he could never let her die).

You mean Taozi angry at Chang'er for not saving them? Well, she has a right to be angry, she did not do anything wrong, so in her mind, the right thing to do is to help her. Since that is how she thinks, then she would have done the same thing if it were her, to save a friend who did not wrong you.

The guy who is most rational and logical is Pei Yuan who has no love life. He told Li Ni not to see her anymore because he's a Li and she's a Cui and they could never marry each other.

The fact that people dislike fl shows how complex a character she is since she a heroine, not a villain.

they did give each time to calm down. they agreed to go their separate ways after the betrayal, that the next time they meet, they are enemies, and he would not hesitate to kill her next time. She met LCF on the way back and was angry with him for the betrayal and not consulting her first.

Even though she makes it sound like she's mad at him for not saving LCF, she doesn't mean it exactly that way. She has a personality that sometimes she says things she doesn't really mean literally. She knows that Li Ni doesn't owe her or anyone to save LCF or even her and Taozi. In her grief and guilt, she feels sad and guilty that he died for her, like so many times before, he put his life in danger for her. Logically, she knows better that there is no reason for Li Ni to save anyone that day after what happened to his army, she's not logical right now. She's having a breakdown. I don't know if he knew she and Taozi had nothing to do with the betrayal at the time of ambush or after the ambush, i tend to think he didn't know yet, because he was willing to let Taozi die out there. I think he was only trying to save her at that point to make a deal with General Cui.

This is an incredibly painful situation for both of them. The man she is grieving for is the man who betrayed his army. He doesn't want her to not take care of herself when grieving for him, and besides Li Ni doesn't like LCF, but she needs to grief. He saved her life that night when her mother died and she was fleeing from enemies, and now he saved her again when Cui Li ambushed them. He never had his own identity growing up but gave it up for her protection. Even though he was sickly person all his life, he risked his life many times as a stand in for the real Cui Lin. He is her savior. They shared well over a decade of life experiences together. She is closer to him than to Li Ni, even though they are different feelings. She's being held captive by Li Ni and even though she has freedom to go outside, but it is still confinement and that doesn't help her release her emotions. Grief makes a person feel all kinds of emotions. She's grief stricken, depressed, hurt and feeling guilty LCF died trying to save her. She's thinking if Li Ni didn't save her, she should have died with him, or that she should have been the one to die. Now in her grief, she wishes she died with him. Once Li Ni knew the truth that she never betrayed him, his feelings for her returned. He professed his love to her. He recalls that the second time they met, he wanted to kill her because she was so vicious the first time kicking him into the well, but he didn't kill her, and he doesn't know why. Then he recalls how he lost the bet with her when she kissed him, but he didn't care, he felt so happy for no reason. He says it is because I finally knew that you also love me and cared for me, so I don't believe you when you say you don't, I know you do. I don't care if you love LCF or not, my feelings for you are real and I know your feelings for me are real too. When someone hurts you, it's like a defense mechanism, you lash out and want to hurt them back to protect yourself. She was an emotional wreck when she was saying all those things to hurt Li Ni back. A person's psychological state is more powerful than their intelligence or logic. Luckily, Li Ni has high emotional IQ to mend the relationship that he cherishes so much.

Why are you so angry? It's just a movie. Did you see episode 15 what she said to Taozi:
Taozi: Li wronged you without knowing the truth.
Cui Lin: It's our army's fault to let them lost the Pass and more than half their men.
THAT WAS THE TRUTH. I wouldn't have kept calm either if I were in his shoes
but I'd believed he trust me.

Cui Lin: You didn't have to save me. If I'd died with Mister, your anger would've been vented. Don't you people want to kill me and Taozi for revenge? Why don't you kill me instead of pretending to save me?
Li Ni: I figured out the truth about Tong Pass. You didn't' know. Therefore, I wronged you. I should have trusted you, but it happened abruptly. We lost so many men. I lost my mind.

Episode 16 she said to Taozi: I shouldn't be mad at him. If he were someone else, I wouldn't be so mad. HOWEVER, HE IS NOT ANYONE ELSE.

Episodes 15 &16 are among my favorite episodes, might be the top? but I won't know until I finished the movie (still stuck at episode 30) and have a chance to rewatch it properly.
The acting or interactions between Xu Kai and Jing Tian are superb in 15&16. Xu Kai's expressions are so realistic to me. He does not overact one bit. How can he be so realistic in his expressions without looking like he's acting or trying to act, yet his approach is so subtle and soft, when you look at his face, you know exactly what feelings he is trying to convey.

There was also the scene right after Li Ni falsely accused her of betraying his army that she was concerned for Li Ni and told Taozi that if it were the other way around, she would have reacted worse than he did (something like that). After the ambush, she was overcome with grief and other emotions, basically having a breakdown (Li Ni held her captive so all she does is deep in grief all day long staying indoors). The fact that Li Ni understood her emotions so well and compassionately and lovingly helped to navigate her out of her breakdown was beautiful and I will rewatch those two episodes that represent the best in humanity through Li Ni. To me, those two episodes were brilliant display of human emotions and compassion.

Neither does the FL give in to her values. She is willing to give up the only man she could ever love for doing what she thinks is right for the people to have a better life. She has high ambitions and high aspirations, a true heroine. No wonder Li Ni loves only her.
