exactly! the screenwriter and the director are really to blame for this one.
they made the characters more palatable (totally valid choice as screen has different considerations) but they didn't even tweak the arcs to cater to the changes they made to the characters. so of course the scenes that are word by word from the novel won't hit as much because the personalities and motives of the novel characters and the show characters are already totally different.
that's why even the OST (however good and catchy it is) now feels awkward and out of place sometimes because even the lyrics to a mere song has so much disconnect with the script.
I still can't let go of the pilot, which is why I keep watching even though I find almost everything here bland…
the pilot was so goated! i didn't even realize i dropped the show after the second episode (really didn't live up to the first one). i only binged the rest after a while because i was so interested with the premise of episodes 6 and 7. i'm realizing now that the episodes are kind of... a hit and miss.
sooooo much potential. but that's the thing- it's all just potential. i like the story, i like the chemistry, i also don't see that much issue with the acting, but there's just something wrong that i, for the life of me, could not pinpoint since episode 2.
after this episode, i get it now. they just don't know how to tell this story well. the direction and script is just... bland. this story (and this episode, specifically) has so much potential to be so flavorful but it keeps ending up being so bland 😭 it's like eating a lollipop because the flavor looks promising, but you find yourself finishing it yet still not getting the taste you thought was there.
since they decided to do an nc scene for this episode, then they should have utilized that properly to convey the weight of the scene. because it kind of feels like they put that just for the sake of saying they did an nc scene. that's why it's disappointing, because it didn't serve the purpose it was meant to serve (where is the tension? the yearning? where is the angst??? the script is telling me it's there, but it's not showing me). so, really, it isn't about the nc scene. they could have completely ditched the nc scene and just insinuated they had steamy love making for all i care, but at least give me a satisfying emotional reunion!
will still watch and finish the show because as i've said, i like the story and the chemistry. but at least now i can perfectly manage my expectations.
