I think its good that he didn't stick to one type of drama. He has different audience for each different dramas. Hit or miss is a different preference for different individuals. One drama might be a hit for someone but a miss for other. E.g I am not a fan of his drama Falling into Your Smile despite its massive popularity, but I still like his portrayal.
I don't understand this obsession whether his drama flops or popular. There are 300s dramas came out every quarters and this drama rank 3rd on the chart, they are not allowed to promote because of the sensitive theme and wasn't even allowed to be displayed on the front page of the app but still managed to pull in 18million yunhe per day. Also "trending" drama in China has never been a reliable thing, they were often bought so that at the end of the day they can tell in their wrapped up drama report how many trending topics they have. Xu Kai's dramas at most has 2 digits trending topics because he never bought them. Besides what matters is the drama is good or not. This is one of the few dramas has good script and good flow and a different kind of storyline, I'm tired of the same cdrama falling in love, promote CP, being scheming with each other just out of jealousy etc. This drama barely has romance, and romance drama attract a lot more people. I for one glad that Xu Kai's dramas has real audience who discussed plots and characters, rather than just fans commenting where it charted or it flops or not or if this drama is the most popular ever. If you don't enjoy the storyline then fine there are others who does. Falling into Your Smile is super popular but I haven't finished watching it because I don't like those kind of genre but I love this kind of genre and script who cares it flops or not at least I have a drama I can watch.

In ancient China a lot of stupid things were done because of auspicious belief, you can check out their ancient history for example during Ming dynasty when an Emperor died, if he for example has 30 concubines, all of those concubines have to be buried alive with him just because he died. Does it make sense for us in the modern times? No, but it happened. So this story was written based on this "stupid" history as the story said in this drama, Ding family pure lineage dated back to Song Dynasty of China. They are ancient. They have been holding on to this auspicious tradition since ancient times. Which is why upon the new era, their new generation thinking has evolved, Ding Yunqi's father wanted to stop all these, it should have ended with him but he is unable to. Which is why Ding Yunqi is angry because of this ridiculous auspicious tradition that gets so many people killed including his mother. But so far there are still loose ends regarding his mother's death so we will have to wait and see.
My God the two episodes tonight is so heartbreaking. So many questions just from a few key scenes. The Luo Yunsong scenes when he got back and completely broken down. The fireworks scene is absolutely epic. Who is the purple fireworks? Who is the person who Cui Yanzhi said the person she set up at the bell tower that is not supposed to join the fireworks? There is only two suspects there though.
The scenes when his dad on his death bead is so heartwrenching. When he said he saw his wife in red dress gosh my heart just break. I cried. The saddest moment yet.
I think popularity is only counted by fans. I am for one glad that many type of audience who checks out drama based on their interest. Usually drama with CP as the focus get the most popularity, drama like this usually have a certain type of audience who might like it. It's good if its popular of course but it shouldn't be a benchmark.
Episode 14 was unexpectedly emotional. I always hate Luo Jiutian scenes but the way his death played out is really emotional. Good acting all around.
I like how strong headed Ding Yunqi is against Commander Hu. He didn't compromise a single thing but managed to negotiate by planning and executing his plan ahead to trap Commander Hu. Also the way he rejected Wu Shuang honestly. He was calm and very firm. Now I am curious who is this Ladyship.
Preview for episode 16 and 17 already showed he has found his father that was surprisingly fast. I can't wait to see it.
this drama actually have a good plot, only the pace is slow . For Xu Kai i will wait until finish :D

For me it wasn't instant love but it was a built up feelings, as far as until episode 15 they never really materialized their "love" but rather develop feelings over each other's characteristic. They never even confessed... and never get to confessed. It can be seen that Bai Jue develop a feelings as part of his admiration for Shang-gu unexpected character where he thought she was too immature and irresponsible but when situation involved three realm she never hesitate to improve herself once she learned the bigger picture. Bai Jue has been brought up with harsh demand from the ancestral father so the only way he knows to approve of someone is through sense of duty which he saw in Shang-gu. Just my opinion from my watching perspective of course.
As for the later episodes past ep 15 yes to what you ask. But it's too much of spoiler to tell you because things really take an unexpected turn. Unless you really don't mind big spoiler.

No problem. They had to stretch that part out to cover the parts that they need to cut off. As for the censorship if you noticed they have not shown inside the tomb yet because this is up until episode 12. Censorship don't check all episodes they will only check the first dozen episode so after this there will be some tomb shot but in return the drama cannot be promoted to avoid being take down in the middle of airing. I saw that they released bts of them in the mountain which technically not a tomb so hopefully they can still retain those scenes in the drama. The problem with their censorship is that the drama has passed censorship then they suddenly imposed new ban a month later and it can still impact the drama that has gotten the license.

You are not wrong, what I know from weibo the director also answered DM, the first 6 episodes supposed to have the introduction of sect based on a certain elements but this elements had to cut off due to censorship and risked the drama being taken down after the whole fiasco with Lamu Yangzi and Li Xian drama being retract back and in Lamu Yangzi case, banned. Then the censorship also just recently banned "Tomb robbery" theme which means half of this drama plot is based on this theme but they had to take all those out in order to air and in order to finished airing safely they had to air it low-key without a single promotion. What we see the first few episodes is a last minute work to alter in order to pass censorship. They salvage what they can to air this drama according to the director. Not telling this for sympathy and it was right if you don't like it you should dropped. But just sharing how the production company in China now can't deliver their creativity because their hands are tied. Their situation is so unpredictable that the drama can be ready to broadcast the next day, that same morning the gov recalled it back and suddenly banned, now they keep repeating the slogan "Broadcast is victory".
