Both thrillers are inspired by western novels, with the setting change to Asia of the last century. The cinematography is spectacular and the plot itself captivating.

Both are dark stories that take unexpected turns! Though I will say that The Handmaiden's story is easier to follow than Old Boy.

Both are set in the 1930s and have a plot revolving around schemes, hidden agendas, and a relationship between two women. While the romance between Hideko and Sook-hee is explicitly text, Jiang Xinyu and Xu Yanzhen's is subtextual.

Both have changes of perspective (tho Monster way more dramatically so) that divide the movie into parts. They have a similar vibe, only Monster feels more desperate. There are more things, but mentioning them would spoil the movies.
