The only difference is that the Korean version of this story makes the viewer root for the main characters, who become almost likeable and beautiful. I never thought I'd cry for Valmont (Korean version, of course). Thinking about it, it's much easier to get attached to Bae Yong Joon than you can ever do to John Malkovich!

The story was pretty good. It was definitely VERY risque for a Korean movie. I'm quite surprised they actually have movies like this there was quite a bit of random nudity. The acting was also very good. Overall this movie is definitely worth watching. Myself, i loved the American version and ive watched it several times; seeing it played out in a historical Korean setting was very interesting i really enjoyed it ^^

A Pretty Good Korean Version of Dangerous Liasions
I'm a sucker for this story. I've seen so many versions. Even though I always know how it ends, and they *always* end the same way, I will watch. This Korean version is pretty darn good. It follows the story fauthfully, while staying authentically Korean. Yet, there a subtle little nods to the original French novel, Les Liaisons Dangereuses. The time period, for one, as well as the 18th century score. To stay authentically Korean, however, some parts were changed, such as the Korean Marquise de Merteuil (Here Lady Cho) being the barren wife of an aging nobleman, and the Korean Cecile (So Ok) being the young, virginal new concubine. Those are only a couple of examples. There are a few more, but ultimately none of the changes made ruin the plot nor deviate from the original story.I won't give anything away, if you have never seen any of the versions. I will say that it's beautifully made and plesant to watch. There is nudity and sex, but I have seen way more graphic. It is all artfully done, which plays into the story, actually. If you watch it, you will see what I mean. Still, I wouldn't reccommend it to younger viewers. It is a very sexually charged story, after all.
All in all, though, I think it's a great version and was really impressed how they adapted it to make it uniquiely Korean story wise. 8.5.

the korean take is interesting, more f*cked-up as they r family not ex-lovers who r bored and a bit narcissistic - who for the fun of it make bets about seducing people. making them family has its yuck factor for me, and both of them were equally messed-up, doing anything for the fun of it. treating others like pawns for their amusement, which given the time period was befitting, as usually rich people didn't have many ways to entertain themselves - so a twisted mind "helped".
didn't by the love story, not between the cousins, neither the young lovers who just exchanged letters, or the widow and Jo Won. that was kind of a hard-sell and left me feeling it was either rushed or lost in translation.
don't find this better, just different, even the sex/nude scenes weren't overly R-rated, yeah it was needed to tell the story, but as opposed to other movies i've seen, it was moderate. not vulgar.
still good, not a rewatch, but interesting (as someone who has seen other adaptations of this movie from other countries, quite good).

No seduction just a rapist with power
from the description and trailer i thought this was going to be a movie with great lines, smooth talkers or seduction skills of high levels from both men and women. You get none of those. I lasted about 40 mins before turning off cause all i get was one man who called himself a seducer, but really was just a guy with power he used to rape woman. You can’t call yourself a seducer of woman if they literally have no choice, but to sleep with you.Main characters idea of seducing:
1. Corner women on street and get rid of her protection, making her uncomfortable.
2. Blackmail ladies servant so you can force yourself alone with lady and just straight out ask her to have sex with you.
3. Give to charity anonymously, but have someone talk about loudly so the lady can overhear how generous you are…
I’m just giving these movie a 5/10 of the lead incredible Jeon De-yeon.

Rare opportunity
Its is a rare opportunity to watch a Korean film that is not restricted by ratings and daring enough to depict the story in it's true essence. Truly surprising and beautifully made film not to be missed. This showed lust, sex, and love to be same back then as it is now. A heartwarming and daring story showing the true meaning of love being different for everyone.Was this review helpful to you?
