First 5 episodes were great but then idk what happened.

The female lead has the strangest behaviour ever she doesnt take part in anything, she doesnt make decisions on her own, all she does is hurt the male lead without any real reason. She insists on listening to her mother which is tbh a very petty person, a truly unlikeable character. Her feelings are half assed and she doesnt seem that serious about her partner. Her character is so bad written that its almost tiring to watch her.

The male lead is a very kind hearted person who doesnt know when to stop.
Being this forgiving is never a good thing.

The story is kinda boring, its like a family drama. Could be better but i think they stopped trying midway

THE MUSIC OMG THE SAME SONG OVER AND OVER AGAIN

At first it looked exciting but it turned out to be very boring.

A crown jewel of a drama!

I do not even know how to start this review. All I know is :
1. I am elated to have even beheld this drama
2. It is such a jewel.

A jewel of real life to be more precise. Something in The Rain is a true to life drama. It showcases in such a poignant way , the first flutterings of love . It brilliantly portrays how relationships are all about timing and that, perhaps, the love of your life is the person you have known for 10+ years and all it takes is a moment of true courage and realism to change everything that relationship previously pivoted on. Its a drama about courage and how love can inspire in us ,our most beautiful selves . That love is not consuming but uplifting. That to love is ultimately to be brave and unapologetically truthful and searingly honest with our true selves.

SOTR also sublimely offers wider commentary on societal norms and issues. It can also be viewed as a drama that takes a microscopic look on women in the workplace and the micro aggressive trials that they face . The social commentary on the patriarchal Patsy i.e women who pander to patriarchy so they can benefit was realistically done .To add to the more real life ethos of this drama ,the antagonists were antagonists you would encounter in real life . People who want to get ahead in life and will do whatever it takes . People who will earnestly have your back and sincerely want to look out for you but drizzle your life with toxicity.

I cannot honour this drama without touching on the wonderful director- Ahn Pan Seok. I have watched his previous work in Secret Love Affair which is also stellar but he really delivered in SOTR . Perhaps over delivered. The use of wide shots firmly put the viewer in their place. He tells us through his angles that we are observers of passion and peoples lives. To create such ambience is truly art and I tremendously applaud! The attention to detail is amazing that even doors , wine bottles and elevators have acting prowess ! The director also has a knack of fleshing out his leads .In the short span of ten minutes,we see the various personas of one character which is very skillful .

Speaking of leads - AHMAZING . Son Ye Jin was astounding and Jung Hae In was spell bounding .Terrific performances from the both of them and their chemistry is second to none in all the K drama's I have watched.

The music is absolutely gorgeous . It had this coffee house feel which was soo sublime for words to portray.Rachel Yamagata's pieces were tear inducing and Bruce Willis rendition of Save the Last Dance could just make me swoon. I loved every single track . Hats off to the musical direction too because insertion was perfect. "with your love, I can see anything through..." I cannot stressssss to you how perfect this OST was for this drama!

OVERALL- You may find it doesn’t answer some things- a lot of viewers have problems with the ending and the general latter half of the drama but that is the realism, the genius and design of Ahn Pan Seok.SOTR intention is not to be thoroughly satisfying with a bow because ultimately , life is not like that .Things happen in life . Things also lose momentum and things pick up again too. Usually with no design!

To portray all that in a drama ?! I call GENIUS.

Truly, I think I fell a little in love with the idea of these two being in Love!

I think the fact that I'm getting older might have something to do with this, but I couldn't peel my eyes away from the screen whilst watching this. I'm under 30, so I don't clearly understand a lot of the pressures they face. But, honestly... I also related so much to being a part of a family that doesn't really believe in you.
But, besides that, I think I related to a lot of the tears, i related to the pain and the moments where it got too hard. Not only romantically, but in life... and the ambience of the show was so warm and cosy for the most part. even the sad scenes, and the painful scenes, had a level of comfort in them.

I don't know what it was... perhaps something in the rain. ;)

"You can dance-every dance with the guy, who gives you the eye,let him hold you tight, you can smile-every smile for the man, who held your hand neath the candle light, but don't forget who's takin' you home, and in whose arms you're gonna be, so darlin' save the last dance for me."

BEST COUPLE!

So this has got to be one of my favourite dramas of all time because of so many reasons, and what made me discover my love for Jung Hae-In!

THE STORY
The story doesn't follow the typical romance tropes I see in Kdramas- there's no chaebols, deadly family secrets, nor is it a cinderella story. While there are typical family dynamics here, it all felt so real. The story pits Jin Ah and Joon Hee in not a "forbidden romance" but rather a romance that places them in an incredibly awkward situation. They're sort-of-friends (through their siblings) and live fairly average lives. There's the crazy mother obsessed with the family image that also pushes the plotline through. There are many mixed thoughts on the story, but I will acknowledge that a lot of times the story was very suffocating. I just wished for these two to catch a break- from work lives and home lives. Jin Ah reminds me of a lot of Asian girls I know and her family even mirrors a lot of my family dynamics. Many people will dislike much of her actions, but in the grand scheme, it's understandable how she's ended up in a lukewarm state because of how she was brought up. I also like the other plot happening at work- the director really knows how to make two large situations together to create one suffocating problem, but one that makes sense and doesn't take away from the other problem. The story leads you to sympathize and hate different decisions, but it's life. Neither Joon Hee nor Jin Ah were perfect, and that's what made it real and believable. You really need tissues and to make sure you're in the right state of mind for this one, but the skillful writing was very well-done.

THE CAST
Son Ye Jin and Jung Hae In are two of my favourite actors. They both executed their roles perfectly and the tender nuances in their gazes- wow. I melted, cried and laughed with them. While I love both of them, I was very pleasantly surprised by Hae-In's skill in acting and how he completely charmed me and swept me off my feet. I could feel the emotion from the other side of the screen. Hae-In has the nuances of Joon Hee so down and you can see that he's been interested in his noona for a while but never really acted or even realized it himself hahaha. I also admire the improv skills they have, and their amazing chemistry. I watched a lot of behind the scenes and I saw how much improv they've done and I was shocked silly. Honestly, Hae-In is a very skilled improv actor and he really knows how to place himself in the shoes of his character. Ye Jin also is an actor that you can sense the experience of right off the bat and she really brought her Noona role to life here. Also, I appreciated how the director kept a lot of the improv and encouraged it all! Honestly, the same director as One Spring Night and they're both so well directed!

MUSIC
God, do not get me started. The music here was amazing and really set the scene. The arrangements were perfect and set the whole kind of "flashback/vintage" vibe immediately. Whoever arranged the set and the music did a phenomenal job. They complimented each other beautifully and I actually had all the songs from the soundtrack on repeat for a month. I literally play this music whenever I sit in the rain and the scenes with just music and their crazy antics were executed beautifully.

REWATCH VALUE
Honestly, I'd watch this 100 more times. I've watched it about five times now (though not completely). I wouldn't watch every single episode again if I didn't want to feel the suffocation from the angst (don't get me wrong I loved the angst) but you know my heart can't take breaking that much all the time hahah. Honestly, flag your favourite episodes and rewatch those or rewatch it all with a couple of friends- this drama is bound to bring a lot of discussions.

CONCLUSION
A beautiful and well-told story. Honestly, the director and videographers did an amazing job and the shots were timed perfectly and chosen perfectly for each scene. Honestly, I'm keeping an eye on this director because all his works are similar vibe and are skillful pieces of art. Ahn Pan-seok is a rare talent and also so funny during filming! All the production crew did a great job as well. I loved this and the story will always live in me and I don't have enough words of praise to fully express my appreciation and love.

I'd be very sad if I'd let the negative reviews disuade me from watching it

I just made my account because I was flabbergasted that there were reviews so critical of this show. I want to do my part and rectify this unfortunate situation.

I'm glad that I didn't read any reviews before watching it, because if I'd let the negative ones disuade me I'd be sad. I loved this show very much. I never found it dragging nor repetitive, and I never disliked the music. Movies and shows don't usually make me cry (Schindler's List got me, but that's about it), however with this show I was crying at 3 AM. It definitely hit me in the feels.

If you're on the fence about whether or not to watch it, please, please do.

Great cast, but...

This show started out well. The main leads had terrific chemistry together. I loved the ML's character, the FL not so much. This was a character that seemed to feed off of drama that was going on around her, and if there wasn't drama, she would create it. Though she was the older of the two, she was so immature compared to the ML.

The FL's mother - oh my gosh, just the worst! I know that Korean culture places high importance on respect for your elders, but there has to be a line somewhere. To just let your mom walk all over you and decide your future, that's just wrong.

Costuming was good. I especially loved the cream-colored wool coat he was wearing in the rain. Why was I focused on the clothes? Apparently, I wasn't loving the direction of the writing.

Great music, but it didn't fit in with the drama at all.

Something about this drama was so raw which made it so interesting for me to watch.
The way both main characters were portrayed just made it so easy for the watcher to enjoy it ... enjoy love .. enjoy the feeling of being in love.
There were many aspects that I loved in this drama because they relate to life in general, the first being overbearing and controlling parents who think they have the right to be in control of their Childs life just because they gave birth to them .. It's a simple subject yet somehow this is the first drama that did it in such a real way to the point that it hurts. and resonates with the watcher, instead of other dramas that constantly make it seem like a cliche.
Going back to the main couple, I just like how strong they both are and how the writers were not afraid to show how different they are ... Sometimes they couldn't understand each other but that was okay because thats how reality is ..
If you are into fast plots and detest slow moving story then I wouldn't recommend this.

I think this drama is highly underrated . It’s a slow drama so don’t expect the crazy ride here but that’s the beauty of it. For me it’s all about small moments here- the smiles, walks, silence, gestures and that all with great music in the background.
I’m impressed with performance of the lead actors - they don’t need much of words to show us chemistry between them and beauty of feelings they have for each other.
I’ve watched a lot of Korean dramas and this one is my number one. And I’ll definitely rewatch it soon

Pulls a strong emotional punch

This Kdrama absolutely pulls at the heartstrings all the way though. Initially we are drawn into the unfolding romance between the leads which is light , playful and a delight to watch. About half way though, the tone begins to change, as the characters encounter fierce opposition from all quarters and don't have the strategies or an ability to communicate with each other in a way that helps them to resolve it.

The acting is outstanding from all players, and the camera work is so loving that each scene feels beautifully shot and intimate.

Anyone watching this for a sure romance will be disappointed, because the real story in this drama is the strong commentary on traditional Korean society. This drama explores the devastating impacts of parental pressure on the choices children have. We are shown two parenting styles - one who is uninvolved and neglectful and the other overbearing and controlling. Both end up playing emotional havoc on their children rendering them incapable of taking full responsibility for their lives. The journey of Jin Ah, in the lead female role, is to free herself from the grip of family and work so that she can grow into an independent self-determining adult. This journey is hard won, and painful to watch.

Because this is a romance, we know there will be a happy ending. However, the happiness achieved is undercut by what the characters will have to leave in order to achieve it and for this reason their future lives together feels hopeful rather than assured. I loved this kdrama for this complexity, and for the questions that linger long after I finished watching it.

If the second half was like the first I would have given it a 9.50, and I didn't give CLOY that. My favorite director, plus SYJ made the role so relatable and realistic. But then the writers did her dirty with the psycho mom taking over and destroying everything. I also didn't like the same song being played over and over again. But the end of episode 3 is probably the best thing I've ever watched on T.V. This is a deliciously angsty relationship, and we're talking about real angst (fooling around with your friend's sibling, without them knowing anything) here. Pity they later downgraded it to 'my mom doesn't approve and at my age I only do what she wants'.

However, it's the first kdrama I've ever watched, and, again, the first half was absolutely brilliant.

Sunshine faded to dreary rain

My recommendation is enjoy the first 8 episodes and then skip to the last one to finalise.
Jung Hae plays, 24 yr old, Seo Joon Hee convincingly as the besotted younger lover. He shows cuteness and strength of character that is very appealing. His romance with Yoon Jin Ah (Son Ye Jin) is sweet and believable. As the older lover Jin Ah is lovely in the beginning, however, the writer/director input to her character fails to keep this drama on track. Filler issues are over the top and frustrating for the viewer - the ex boyfriend turned dangerous stalker, the bullying abusive mother and the toxic workplace environment leave a very bad taste in my mouth as the hapless Jin Ah remains passively observing or avoiding or deliberately lying to keep reality at bay.
There is a repeated OST that becomes as annoying as the situations depicted.
I felt that the watcher is pulled along and not invited to learn any of the backstory or what drives the decisions being made.
