Lee Kwang Soo Positively Considering to Join the Star Studded K-Drama "Open Murder Contract" Shi Hyun, the monetary policy manager at the Bank of Korea, predicts a massive national financial crisis and reports it to the Director. The Director doesn’t schedule an emergency summit until 10 days later but does it without notifying the public of the situation. Shi Hyun urges for the crisis to be announced in order to warn people of the looming disaster, but her plea is ignored. The summit is held behind closed doors. Jung Hak, a financial consultant, notices Korea is suddenly hemorrhaging foreign funds, and he learns the reason is that international finance firms have ordered an all-out investment withdrawal from the country, which has caused the credit rating to plummet. He hands in his resignation and decides to play the odds on what he’s sure is a coming crisis. He secretly starts gathering investors willing to do the same. Gap Su, a family man who runs a small tableware factory, has a big break and wins a contract with a department store. The fact that the price settlement terms equal to little more than a promissory note concern him only briefly, and oblivious to the looming financial upheaval, Gap Su signs the contract. The Managing Director of IMF comes to Korea just one week before the country goes bust, and that is when those who try to prevent the crisis, those who seek to take advantage of it, and those only trying to protect their livelihood are caught in the wake of national bankruptcy. It is a solid movie for its script, combined with top notch acting from Kim Hye Soo, Yoo Ah In and the supporting cast. Nothing spectacular but I find it really interesting how they made the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis into a gripping, compelling movie. Honestly, I only watched this because I of Yoo Ah In, I simply wanna watch him act and showcase his prominent acting (which he did not disappoint), though I did not regret watching this movie, I may not even bat an eye to this if not for him. The movie reminded me why Kim Hye Soo is a top actress, she sure commands the screen when she's on. The drama despite feeling a bit documentary is surprisingly not monotonous. I may not be able to grasp some things, needed to pause here and there to chew what they were talking (not really good at with the subject matter - "FINANCE") but you will find yourself entertained a bit.
On the side note, I now only realized after watching this movie that we were also affected with the Asian Financial Crisis back in the same year. Layoffs and shut down of big companies. Well, it shows that this movie has fed me something to remember and ideas I only get to know because I watched this.

Montée trop haut, trop vite, l'économie s'effondre...
Ma première justification dans le choix de ce film a été la présence de Yoo Ah In, et je vous avoue tout de suite que les débuts du film où tout se passe entre banquiers, financiers et ministres m’a un peu pesé, car je n’y comprenais pas grand chose, mais très rapidement l’aspect humain prend le dessus avec la différenciation des personnages et le souci du réalisateur de leur avoir donné de la chair, du caractère, une histoire personnelle.Citation de Florent Boutet, programmateur du festival :
En effet, CHOI Kook-hee s'est appliqué à sonder à la fois les acteurs du monde bancaire coréen, mais également les plus humbles. Là où la démonstration aurait pu être confuse et trop technique, le film gagne en émotion et en humanité. Les différentes facettes du récit sont illustrées par la qualité du jeu des acteurs, Kim Hye-soo en tête, à la fois citoyenne coréenne mais aussi maillon essentiel de l'économie du pays. Face à elle on retrouve toute une galerie d'acteurs magnifiques, tel YOO Ah-in (BURNING) ou plus surprenant, Vincent Cassel, campant avec classe un membre du FMI sans scrupules, cynique à souhait. Le film a été un joli succès lors de sa sortie en salles en Corée avec plus de 3 millions d’entrées.
Alors, comme ce n’est pas un blockbuster américain, il n’y a pas vraiment de happy end, les magouilleurs ont gagné plein d’argent, le FMI peut faire sa loi dans le pays et les pauvres sont encore plus pauvres… Cependant il y a aussi la lumineux personnage de Kim Hye Son qui ne cède pas, continue à se battre et ramène un peu de foi en l’Humanité… Toute la distributions excellente d’ailleurs, émaillée de figures vues de nombreuses fois quand on est comme moi fan de dramas !
Apparemment, il n’y pas de « castes » d’acteurs en Corée, drama ou film, ils jouent tout !
