Unenjoyable

Didn't really like this first episode all that much. The out of control predatory behavior of the seniors towards the freshmen was very much disgusting. I was very uncomfortable through a lot of the episode. Which I'm hoping was done on purpose, but still. Also, I wish they would've given the lead actress a different hairstyle. She looks so old here. It very much shows that she's one of the eldest cast members. And I get everyone making a bit deal out of her looks is mandatory for plot purposes, and she's pretty, but she's not as insanely gorgeous as they're trying to make her seem. The whole thing felt very disingenuous to me.

10/10 - One of the best first episodes I have ever seen.

My ID is Gangnam Beauty is probably one of the best first episodes I have ever seen. Even if the show deteriorates from here, this first episode has left an impression. Not to mention I think it gets all of its important points across well and makes its point.

The stress of beauty. Or more correct the stress of being a woman. We see Mi Rae harshly judging other women's faces. Casting unfavorable light on her characters. So materialistic! Then we follow along as it's clear she's getting a new face. This is all just so materialistic and it could have come off unwell for the story. However, as we follow Mi Rae the story of her past leading up to that moment becomes clear. Even as she strapped down to the table and the risks of having plastic surgery are clearly laid before her. As a child she was "fat" and we see her dealing with these boys bullying her. She even says she was strong willed and didn't take it lying down. The more she fought back the harsher their treatment became. Until she took her strong will into helping her lose weight and keep it off. Believing the potential she had. Then after clearly being a top student she decides to confess to her crush. Which leads her down the harsh rabbit hole of being "ugly". Spending her entire youth under such cruelty. Maybe that boy's rudeness is what started it or everyone was waiting to bash her with it.

What's even more stunning is the director's choice to use shots and techniques so that the viewers can never see Mi Rae's original face. So that we can not judge her. We're only left with the person that she is to her core, and her new face.

A new face, and a new life."

Is what Mi Rae wants and her mother promises. Really what Mi Rae wants is to be average and to simply not be bullied. Her only dream. After surgery she is a knock out beauty though. Now the other side of the coin is turned. A different kind of attention.

What I do love is that Mi Rae's mom isn't her only support. She also has a great friend, Hyun Jung. Who she trusted with the secret of her surgery and her new face. I'm excited to see a great friendship between girls in a drama.

Speaking of that different kind of attention you can see Mi Rae waiting for people to take her out. She starts to enjoy life as a beauty. Finally able to show of her dance moves, which were unacceptable for her to show off as an "ugly girl". When the other shoe drops. Already having to take sexual harassment from a senior. Who actually gets her alone and blocks her in a room. The attention of being too good looking starts. The reality that no matter what you look like as a woman it's tough. You're harassed if your too beautiful, not beautiful. Average is better, but the reality is there will always be harassment and judgement.

I'm making this drama seem deep and dry. It is deep and I believe it has very strong messages. It is also very fun and funny. A good time. It has a promising male lead that has a past with Mi Rae's character. He noticed her from his brief stent at her middle school. Enough so that he might actually recognize her by her dance foot work. He's a stunner, a person who destined for natural photo shoots where every he goes. (Mi Rae's thoughts.) What I like is he isn't just an aloof male lead. He's pretty clever. Rebuffing the "natural beauty" Soo Ah's attentions on him by getting other guys to help her sober up! I feel like the writers won't leave us, or Mi Rae, guessing about whether or not he knows her.

What I find odd is that after Mi Rae's plastic surgery they don't tell her dad. It's clear he's very proud of her and loves her exactly the way she is. He can't see the issues in her life. They haven't told him yet, and I feel like that could end very poorly.

Overall I think this is a wonderful start and I truly hope the rest of the drama can keep up with such a solid beginning.

*****I originally hastily slapped on a 8/10 rating, but I know it deserved a 10/10. Because this first episode was incredible!

Five Stars

I was BLOWN away by the first episode. Was really sucked in from the first moment. I felt really immersed in the world of someone who considers herself to be ugly. Can't wait to see what the next episodes bring.

Good start

This episode provided a good start to this drama - it introduced the characters in a good way, set up what the plot will center around and made me excited about the next episode. Although, right of the bat, I was a bit hesitant about this drama due to the main issue at hand - if you do plastic surgery you become pretty and thus life will be wonderful - however, I think this drama so far also shows how having PS can lead to not-so-desirable outcomes, and balancing these two sides I believe can become a strength of the show.

So excited to see the development

The plot about pc is really interesting. I have an opinion about it but see this from the point of view of a person who had pc can change my mind and I'm really looking forward to this Also, I'm loving the cast. I'm already loving Do Kyung Seok and can already tell the trashes (I'm looking at you Soo Ah). Show the parents side is also very welcomed and interesting. Really, really excited for this drama

Different concept

Nice one different story ,so many things this drama showing us .mother father's love towards daughter .duaghter always father's princess no matter what she look like and mother try her best to look her fit, heathy and beautiful ... How we look it doesn't matter but how we are and we do it's matter ,person should have good heart it doesn't matter how he look like ..many people says this to make us satisfy and many of us leave our life in this way, same lead actress doing but surrounding not let her to spend her life in her way ,they irritated her ,make fun of her , though in drama she shown toughest girl but at last she lost hope and went for plastry surgery which totally change her life , she wanted to proof herself in those eyes who always make fun of her and she make it ..Let see at what extent her decision goes right .Lead actor is also looking so cute and handsome.
