both are romantic historical dramas which emphasize a love triangle between a simple woman, the king of the country and the woman's childhood friend/ the king's brother . Also, a thing which I found very similar was the fact that both stories begin with a childhood sequence of the main characters ^^

The storyline is about enduring love from childhood to adolescent, put stop by circumstances. They main lead met again, though initially they did not recognize each other.

Very beautiful Joseon era drama, with great chemistry between the leads.

Both are historical dramas situated with fantasy;
Both have moon/sun archetype;
Amnesia female lead with unhinged male lead;

I feel that in both dramas the kings have the same nature. Also, in Jang Ok Jung the king falls for a palace maid whereas in Moon embracing the sun, the king falls for a shaman (both of a low class). Both love stories begin during childhood.

It has some aspects to it that are the same. The King only has enduring love for the girl he met when they were young. Political struggles between factions. Power struggles within the palace.

they're the 2 best "historical" drama, I've seen. We can laugh and cry. The actors are really good too. So if you loved Hong Gil Dong, you'll love The Moon that Embraces the Sun !
