It is about Sisterhood - with a deep connection transcending age and nation. Yet in a man´s world.
When watching KMovies, one stumbles across productions that are surprisingly quiet and told with comparatively few words. "Moonlit Winter" is one of them. A quiet road movie of a mother an her daughter enriched with pictorial symbols and allegories. Like a long cold winter night. It's about the unhappy love between two young girls that wasn't allowed to be. (SIDE NOTE: To this day, homosexual love is socially outlawed in South Korea. Starting with the younger generation, a little more tolerance is creeping into society, but only at a snail's pace they are starting to find something like solid ground under their feet.)
It is about the (need for) reconciliation with the past. About shame, guilt and forgiveness. And about choosing yourself first. Self love. And then, strengthened in that, one can choose anything, including a relationship... even if it's a homosexual one that still is socially undesirable...
Intense! The list of awards is correspondingly long. However: The intensity could easily be missed, because the quiet, long winter nights are what they are: Long. Dark. Cold. If you don't discover the magic of the diffuse moonlight for yourself, then time can get pretty dreary and gloomy.
The cast fits the show. They are all radiating and keeping the intensity in minimalistic terms.
It is about women with a deep connection transcending age and nation. About Sisterhood!
Tender. True. Yet in a man´s world.

Even though Yoonhee was the focus of the movie, her daughter, Saebom, was a scene stealer. I found her interest for film photography is a nice element to this film! I love her attention to detail. Her mom knows everything she doesn't tell, and I think that Saebom is alike. The trip that she prepared for her mom was probably the best gift! It's a heart-warming movie. I personally love the ending, character development and the cinematography.

The drama was just enough and the character interesting. Especially the daughter, she was feisty and just the perfect partner for her mother, who was dynamic, but pretty closed to herself. The movie did a nice job with keeping things interesting, however, even though the idea of the story was original and very emotional, it felt like it wasn't well presented. At times, it got a bit confusing and it would have been better, in my opinion, if they had given us some information about their past relationship, or some scenes from the past, as to built a better intensity for the couple. The performances though were very good, and the young couple extra cute.
So, overall, six out of ten, because the story deserved a better presentation.

A very lonely film
I saw another review that said that the snowy weather represented this movie well. I couldnt agree more.I have a lot of mixing feelings about it. The movie felt like an episode taken right out of someone's life..So lonely, so somber, yet bitter sweet.
I know deep down that everything happened as it shouldve, it couldnt have been different. But a part of me just feels like a very lonely child, missing something or someone.
A slow film, a window in-to someone's daily life. I truly loved it.

Good movie.
This movie had a touching story. It was heartwarming and a nice watch. I really liked the cinematography. Saebom's character was refreshing, and her scenes were always interesting. I like how Saebom and Yoonhee really understood each other; it was a meaningful mother-daughter relationship. My favorite part of the film was the letter writing; it was cute, and it really showed the connection between Jun and Yoonhee. I loved how this movie was written and how it went back and forth. I also think it ended nicely.Overall, it was an interesting watch and gives you a lot to think about. Although I wasn't crazy about it, it was still a good watch.

Moments of silence
To nobody's surprise, my favorite scene is absolutely the reunion scene; it's also an amazing example of effective silence, because the film absolutely took its time and you could feel the characters' disbelief and nostalgia with every passing second. That was when the wave of emotions finally hit. This is a warm movie (ironically) with a relatively simple plot. I don't know if it has to be as long as it was, especially since a lot of the screentime was given to the daughter and her boyfriend, who were cute but didn't really feel relevant compared to the mother-daughter relationship.

Dingin tapi hangat.
