On the small island of Utajima, young fisherman Shinji meets Hatsue, the daughter of wealthy boat owner Terukichi, after helping her pull a boat ashore. Captivated by her, Shinji cannot stop thinking about their encounter, even as his mother warns him that Hatsue is beyond his reach. As chance brings them together again, Shinji and Hatsue gradually fall in love and begin meeting in secret. However, rumors of Hatsue’s possible marriage to the educated and well-connected Yasuo, along with jealousy and gossip among the islanders, threaten to tear them apart. Faced with opposition from those around them, Shinji must find the courage to fight for their future.
