Shiosai (1985)

On the small island of Utajima, 18-year-old Kubo Shinji works aboard a fishing boat to support his mother and younger brother. One day, he meets Hatsue, the daughter of wealthy widower Miyata Terukichi, who has recently returned to the island so that her father can find a suitable husband to carry on the family name. As chance brings them together at the fish market and an abandoned observation post, Shinji and Hatsue gradually fall in love and begin meeting in secret. However, Shinji’s modest background, rumors surrounding the well-connected Yasuo, and the gossip of the islanders threaten their relationship. When Shinji and Yasuo are chosen to train aboard the admired Hinode-maru, the voyage may prove decisive for Shinji’s hopes of a future with Hatsue.
