Recommended if you wanna watch slowburn folklore horror.

I honestly didn't have too big expectations from this movie when I started watching it. I decided to give it a try because I was craving to see Lee Dohyun's acting, and he didn't disappoint even for a second with his acting in this movie. Compared to the other three main characters, his role might seem a little less pivotal but the way he portrayed the character of Bong-gil was really admirable. Even the hospital scene of his gave me goosebumps. I really love his versatility and how well he adapted to this role as Bong-gil. Kim Go-eun's acting was obviously great as well! I loved the aura she was giving off as Hwa-rim. Made me tear up when she was crying for Bong-gil. The acting of the main characters is the reason why I decided to rate this 7/10 overall. The story wasn't honestly that strong and some things at certain points felt lacking. The first part was really boring to watch for me but the second part? I loved every moment of it. It wasn't scary to me but a bit creepy yes... If you are into folklore horrors, this one would be good to watch!

Great premise (especially once you realize what this movie's really about) but the execution feels lacking. I love where it was trying to go but unfortunately, it never quite reaches its full potential.

The acting is solid (that cast, am I right?) but the writing could have used a bit more work. I'm also not sure I loved the "style" they chose to portray the evil/supernatural elements —it felt a bit cheap at times. I’d need a spoiler tag to elaborate further on that.

Maybe I just expected too much after reading some reviews, but "Exhuma" is still enjoyable on a basic level, especially if you know a bit about Korean history.

A bit disappointing

İ understand the hype but does it really deserves all that?
İ mean the movie is good, but not up to expectations, in it's core it's quite simple and not very unique.

The first 30 mins are the slowest ever, in case you didn't feel interested in whatever is going to happen or feel attracted to the characters in any way possible, you'll have to go through the next trivial 30 mins to have a total 1 hour of a "could be better" story.

The next chapter however, or the second part of it, this is where things started to get lively and engaging, the unexpected surprise. Be that as it may, I was lost during some parts of it despite being really captivated, i couldn't understand who is the ghost, who is the spirit and how is that related to the original corpse and why the Japanese guy is was there and what exactly is going on and why is he still there, why do the guy want to kill his offsprings and what's the point? A bunch of confused questions, i later found the answers for some of them but it was like whatever fits the narrative.

Maybe because i don't know enough about these korean shenanigans, but the way they ended it was very anticlimactic and disappointing.
You are telling me I can pee on a wooden stick and slap this hulk with it and he is gone? Alright next time i visit a grave in SK I'll make sure to bring a stick and drink a lot of water, just in case.

I know it's not as ridiculous but it's liquid and wood...
Overall, i guess it wasn't for me, I'm definitely not the targeted audience so aside from acting this was very meh!

A good watch but might not be for everyone!

If you are a fan of reflective horror, then this movie might be your cup of tea.

The movie is visually stunning that blends super natural elements along with history and culture of Korea. Set in modern korea against the backdrop of shamanistic rituals, the movie explores themes of family curses and national trauma through a slow-burning yet emotionally charged narrative.

The attention to detail had me impressed. It is pretty clear that the director had done intense research into Feng Shui and Shamanism to add authenticity. The slow pacing and build up along with amazing cinematic shots were an added plus. With big stars in the leading roles, none can be critiqued about the emotions they conveyed through acting.

Now on the other side, I did find the pacing to be off a bit sometimes. Secondly, this movie definitely isn't a scary one if that is what you are looking for. There are intense moments but definitely not scary ones. Finally, I really didn't connect with Kim Go-eun and Lee Do Hyun characters as much as I did with Choi Min Shik's character for some reason.

A Not So Scary Horror Film

Exhuma is a South Korean horror film that draws inspiration from Mudang or Korean shamanism and feng shui, and the atrocities committed by the Japanese during the Japanese occupation in World War 2. It follows a team of shamans and feng shui burial experts as they unearth a cursed grave that bears a secret darker than anything they have ever imagined. I can't really say much about the plot as it would be a spoiler so I'm going to stop right here. But this I will say, it doesn't deserve the praise it got.

Sure, the story is creative from a writing standpoint and it is intriguing as it is based on the superstitious beliefs of the Korean people. But it is not the least bit scary, at least not to me. The acting is nothing special, so I don't understand the multiple acting awards it received. Not to mention it could've benifitted from a shorter runtime. This was at least 30 minutes too long.

And my biggest beef with the movie is the unrealistic first scene where the leads are on a plane to California to meet their client. I believe that scene only serves to throw shade at the Japanese and introduce their anti-Japan propaganda. Yes, Japan did occupy and colonize Korea, and the Japanese committed all sorts of war crimes there. I know that because my country suffered from the same crimes and so did other Asian countries like China. I understand they want to make a movie about the common superstitious belief that Japan cursed their land somehow, but there are plenty of ways to go about it. They certainly didn't need to shoehorn that scene in the beginning.

All in all, this was an entertaining film with a unique plot. But that's about it. South Korea has produced better horror flicks in the past. It's a shame that they've followed in Hollywood's footsteps and become obsessed with inserting political agendas in their movies instead of focusing on making good films. I find their later movies utterly lacking and to think I used to be a huge fan of Korean cinema.

Quando l'horror si fa (solo) rituale

Sceneggiatura molto interessante : 8,5; Regia:7,5; Scenografia: 7,5.
Horror coreano del 2024 con una storia molto interessante, ricca di significati, messaggi e simbolismi.
Il voto della giuria critica è di 7,6 secondo Rotten Tomatoes quindi nella mia valutazione, non da critico, mi sento generosa.
Sebbene sia un horror "riflessivo", capace di farti riflettere sugli orrori delle guerre e delle sopraffazioni, prendendo spunto dall'occupazione giapponese, il problema è che non fa paura. Non è la prima volta che vedo qualcosa di coreano che vorrebbe terrorizzare ma non ci riesce , almeno personalmente e se leggo altre recensioni riscontro lo stesso problema.
Il film esplora profondamente il sincretismo tra sciamanesimo, feng shui, geomanzia (pungsu), cristianesimo e superstizione, offrendo una riflessione sul trauma generazionale e l’eredità della colonizzazione giapponese
Il film parte come ghost story (una sciamana e il suo assistente vengono ingaggiati da un americano di origini coreane per "liberare" il figlio neonato da influssi malvagi) per diventare un delirio mistico collettivo sul finale, con una forte componente simbolica .

Il lavoro ha ricevuto un apprezzamento molto positivo presso l'Asian Film Awards 2025, vincitore per Best Costume Design e Best Visual Effects, mentre il regista e Kim Go Eun, sono stati pluripremiati dal Baeksang Arts Awards 2024,
Analogamente secondo il Blue Dragon Film Awards 2024: Migliore regia, Migliore Cinematografia e Luci, Migliore Direzione artistica e Migliore attrice.

Per quel che mi riguarda, obiettivamente, ho riscontrato i seguenti punti di forza e le seguenti criticità:
Un cast di alto livello (Kim Go‑eun, Choi Min‑sik, Yoo Hae‑jin), con un'estetica piuttosto ricercata e un'atmosfera densa di folklore coreano, i rituali mi sono sembrati realistici e molto coreografici, con buoni effetti scenici, presenza di un forte simbolismo dei messaggi lanciati allo spettatore che lo rendono un film interessante, con un senso e una storia.
D'altro canto l'ho trovato lento, specialmente all'inizio, il tema dell'esorcismo ripetuto e sovraccarico, scene eccessivamente scure, musiche non proprio di altissimo livello che non aiutano a creare un atmosfera terrificante, effetti sonori un po' troppo calcati e finti, interpretazioni disomogenee per livello (Lee do hyun non regge il confronto con Kim go eun, stessa cosa per l'aiutante del geomante e qualche altra comparsa), CGI non sempre di livello (le volpi che da vicino erano palesemente create al pc), potenziale come horror sprecato, nel senso che in poche sequenze mi ha davvero impressionato ma non mi ha mai davvero spaventata.
La color correction tende al seppia-grigio-verde, con pochi contrasti netti: una scelta che in alcuni casi appiattisce le immagini e la tensione visiva.
Interpretazioni: Choi Min-si, qui interpreta il geomante, un ruolo carismatico ma non pienamente sfruttato. Memorabile in Oldboy, qui mi è parso più contenuto, quasi sottotono.
Kim Go-eun, intensa ma anche lei un po' sottotono, più emotivamente espressiva in altri suoi lavori.
Yoo Hae-ji, la sua presenza mi è apparsa poco significativa rispetto al resto del cast.
Lee Do-hyun, confermo sia un giovane attore promettente ma ha mostrato più presenza fisica che emotiva. In drama come The Glory o la Pessima Madre Ideale mi ha convinto di più.

Regia
Diretto da Jang Jae-hyun, è un horror rituale che intreccia paura, spiritualità e storia. La regia costruisce tensione lentamente, con inquadrature statiche, lentissime nei rituali, i suoni sciamanici che diventano strumenti narrativi. La camera è lenta con accelerazioni improvvise quando lo spirito emerge, la macchina accelera e si muove bruscamente, per creare un contrasto emotivo forte. Nei rituali la ripresa è lenta e ipnotica, quasi meditativa.
C'è spesso un uso del fuori campo, spesso ciò che è più spaventoso non viene mostrato subito: rumori, ombre e sguardi degli attori fanno intuire la presenza.
I colori sono freddi e spenti nelle scene notturne e caldi dopo la liberazione del male.
A livello visivo Jang non punta sullo "spettacolare" ma su una regia rituale, lenta, geometrica e simbolica, che trasforma le riprese stesse in un’estensione del gut sciamanico. Il risultato è un film che “ipnotizza” più che spaventare, facendo vivere allo spettatore il senso di oppressione e liberazione.
I protagonisti agiscono come un gruppo rituale, ognuno con un ruolo tecnico e spirituale, senza un eroe solitario.
L’atmosfera nasce dal contrasto fra modernità (ville, cliniche) e tradizione (cimiteri, tombe, monti).
La figura del samurai gigante è simbolo del colonialismo giapponese. La sua altezza esagerata esprime oppressione storica e male sovrannaturale. La fotografia insiste su terra, fango e sangue, rafforzando la fisicità del rituale.
Il ritmo segue fasi precise: diagnosi, preparazione, esumazione, conflitto e purificazione, come in un gut sciamanico.
Jang unisce horror, storia e filosofia dei cinque elementi. Personalmente avrei osato di più.


Il suo forte è il Simbolismo!
Il film "Exhuma" (2024) è intriso di simbolismi profondi, fortemente radicati nella tradizione religiosa, esoterica e storica coreana, con elementi che riflettono trauma generazionale, ritualità ancestrale, relazioni tra vivi e morti, e le tensioni tra modernità e tradizione.
La riesumazione: simbolo chiave del film, rappresenta non solo l'atto fisico di riportare alla luce un corpo ma anche il dissotterramento di memorie familiari represse, di colpe ancestrali, di forze oscure sepolte dal tempo.
Nel contesto culturale coreano, spostare una tomba diventa metafora della rottura dell’equilibrio tra vivi e morti.
La pratica del geomante (interpreto da Choi Min-sik) rappresenta il connubio tra natura, spiritualità e destino umano. Il sito della sepoltura è una fonte di sventura.
Il Gut (rituale sciamanico coreano) simboleggia la memoria collettiva e spirituale del popolo coreano. I suoi canti, i tamburi, le danze, incarnano resistenza culturale contro la secolarizzazione.
Il serpente col volto umano che si vede potrebbe rappresentare il maleficio ancestrale, qualcosa che cambia pelle ma rimane sempre profondamente perverso nei suoi bassi istinti ma anche l'esito mostruoso dell'arroganza del rituale.
Il contrasto (e talvolta la sovrapposizione) tra i simboli cristiani (croci, Bibbia, preghiere) e quelli sciamanici (candele rituali, corde sacre, tamburi) suggerisce un conflitto tra fede importata e spiritualità indigena, l'impossibilità di risolvere il male attraverso una sola lente teologica, il bisogno di un sapere composito, ibrido, per affrontare il trauma, o semplicemente un confronto, un accostamento.
Il trauma storico (colonialismo giapponese),senza essere esplicito, allude a eventi traumatici della Corea, la tomba maledetta richiama il tema della sottomissione forzata, della vendetta, della storia sepolta.
Lo spirito che perseguita è una ferita collettiva non rimarginata, come la memoria della colonizzazione, della guerra, e della povertà trasmessa tra generazioni.
La katana animata (tsukumogami) è un'arma trasformata in spirito vendicativo, simbolo di aggressione perpetua, la cui liberazione ristabilisce l'energia vitale e identitaria , superando, simbolicamente, il vincolo storico generazionale.
La figura del samurai gigante in Exhuma (attenzione che chi lo interpreta è un attore realmente alto 220 cm) è così alta per motivi simbolici, narrativi e spirituali. Non è un semplice effetto horror, la sua altezza veicola diversi significati profondi: la forza brutale e soverchiante dell’occupazione giapponese in Corea (1910–1945). La sua altezza esagerata simboleggia l'imponenza schiacciante del potere coloniale. L’idea che il trauma della storia sia "più grande" dell’uomo comune, al punto da essere ancora oggi “intoccabile”. Una presenza sovrastante e invasiva anche nella morte, quel corpo non riposa, ma domina il territorio spiritualmente e fisicamente.
Non è più un uomo, ma un “tsukumogami” (spirito-arma animato) fuso con una katana maledetta.
Il suo corpo enorme è il risultato di secoli di odio, dolore e maledizione: un corpo spirituale "gonfiato" da rabbia e desiderio di dominio.
Come accade nei miti giapponesi e coreani, le entità maligne crescono a dismisura quando non sono state esorcizzate o onorate.
L’attore che ha dato vita fisicamente a questo personaggio è Kim Byung‑Oh, un ex giocatore di basket alto circa 220 cm
Inoltre, la sua performance vocale inquietante è stata affidata al celebre doppiatore giapponese Rikiya Koyama, rendendo la presenza del guerriero ancor più intensa e memorabile, questo approccio “ibrido” tra un attore d’aspetto enorme accompagnato da una voce distintiva, ha amplificato la potenza visiva ed emotiva del personaggio, rendendolo una figura davvero suggestiva e quasi iconica.

Fate attenzione inoltre al numero delle targhe nelle auto di questo film, in verità sono date care ai coreani.

Intrigante e vale muito a pena!

Fiquei impressionada com a forma como o filme mistura suspense, terror e folclore de maneira tão intensa. A forma como o filme aborda rituais xamânicos e elementos culturais coreanos é fascinante e assustadora ao mesmo tempo.

O que mais me chamou atenção foi o clima de tensão constante, construído com uma direção impecável e atuações fortes, principalmente do Choi Min-sik, que rouba a cena como o mestre de feng shui. É o tipo de filme que te prende do início ao fim, com reviravoltas e sustos na medida certa.

Além de que o filme não é tão assustador assim, então dá para aproveitar e assistir de boa.

Um dos destaques foi a cinematografia. Cada cena é cuidadosamente construída para intensificar o desconforto e o mistério, com ângulos fechados e iluminação sombria que refletem o peso da trama. As cores usadas — predominantemente tons escuros e terrosos — dão um ar místico e claustrofóbico, enquanto os cenários, como florestas densas e antigos túmulos, acrescentam autenticidade e um senso de perigo iminente.

O ritmo do filme é bem equilibrado, alternando entre momentos de ação e introspecção, permitindo que os personagens se desenvolvam e que a trama se aprofunde. Embora tenha alguns trechos que poderiam ser mais ágeis, a sensação de mistério nunca é perdida.

Se você, como eu, gosta de um terror que mistura tradição cultural, uma boa história e uma execução técnica impecável, Exhuma é perfeito para isso. Dê uma chance, pois não vai se decepcionar!

Beau, mystique… mais où est passé le reste ?!?

Je partais confiante... Le cast est un sans-faute 🫶🏻 Kim Go Eun en chamane mystérieuse, Lee Do Hyun avec un charisme sombre avec son hanbok qui claque, le tout saupoudré d’une ambiance thriller un peu occulte… franchement, y’avait de quoi me hyper direct 😮‍💨🔥

Mais au final… mouais... J’en ressors avec un sentiment un peu tiède, limite frustrée 🤷🏻‍♀️ Oui c’est bien foutu, la réal est léchée, y’a des plans stylés, une lumière qui joue bien avec l’atmosphère 👍🏻… mais côté émotions ou tension... c’est le calme plat... J’ai jamais vraiment eu peur, j’ai jamais été bouleversée, j’ai même pas froncé un sourcil de stress 😅

Je m’attendais à un vrai film d’horreur surnaturelle, avec des exorcismes flippants, des rituels qui te mettent mal à l’aise, des possessions bien tordues…mais non 🙃 On est plus dans le thriller mystique, un peu cérébral, très lent, où les enjeux se sont enchaînés sans jamais vraiment m’embarquer 💤 Les passages shamaniques sont jolis visuellement, mais j’ai pas ressenti cette montée en tension que j’attendais. Dommage 😬

Et pourtant, je le répète, les acteurs font le taf ✨ Kim Go Eun est ultra convaincante dans son rôle. Elle a ce calme glaçant, cette espèce de sagesse qui vacille 😮‍💨 Lee Do Hyun, lui, en médium, il a une présence de ouf, hyper magnétique 🧲 Même le prêtre et le moine apportent un petit plus... mais ça n'a pas suffit à me faire... 🥲

Peut-être que j’en attendais trop... 🤷🏼‍♀️ Je sais pas, mais j’ai pas réussi à entrer pleinement dans leur univers 🫠 L’intrigue m’a laissée un peu de marbre, alors que ça aurait dû être fascinant avec tout ce qu’ils abordent (rituels ancestraux, mémoire familiale, malédictions…). Au lieu d’un film intense et marquant, j’ai juste eu un petit divertissement qui sera vite oublié 😶‍🌫️

Bref, "Exhuma" c'est une ambiance soignée, des acteurs solides, mais un fond qui manque de tripes et de frissons 🧊 Je l'ai regardé mais il aura pas réussi à me hanter... ✌🏻

Je dois avouer, j’appréhendais de voir «Exhuma». Je voulais le voir grâce aux acteurs, mais ce qui est horreur n’est pas trop mon genre préféré. Sauf que si octobre est le mois pour quelque chose, c’est bien pour ce genre de film. Heureusement pour moi, ce film ne m’a pas vraiment effrayé, ce qui m’a surprise vu ce que j’en avais entendu dire. Vu que certains éléments se rapportent à l’histoire de la Corée, j’ai été un peu perdue et confuse par moment, mais même sans ceci, si l’histoire est intéressante, elle n’est toutefois pas passionnante. J’aurais préféré une version drama (court), pour apprendre à connaître les personnages un peu plus, et que l’histoire puisse être moins rapide. Là, tout se focalise sur celle-ci, du coup, pour réussir à bien finaliser ledit problème, le reste en a été trop soustrait à mon goût. Une chose à dire cependant… La cinématographie était quelque chose à voir et les acteurs ont joué avec brio !
