Beauty, Lust, and Emotional Destruction

A Frozen Flower is not just provocative cinema — it’s a masterpiece of desire, obsession, love, and jealousy in their rawest form. 🔥🔥

The first time I watched it, I was genuinely overwhelmed. The intimacy felt so real, so vulnerable, that I almost felt like I was witnessing something too private — especially seeing Jo In-sung, an actor I’ve loved for years, stripped so emotionally and physically bare. The lust in this film is intense, consuming, almost dangerous — not for shock value, but because it feels painfully human.

Watching it again, I understood the brilliance even more. Calling this film “porn” would be an insult. It’s art. Every glance, every touch, every moment of betrayal carries unbearable tension. And Joo Jin-mo absolutely deserved the acclaim he received — the heartbreak, jealousy, and quiet devastation in his performance are extraordinary.

This film doesn’t just show passion. It weaponizes it. Absolute recommendation — but not for anyone uncomfortable with intimacy portrayed at its most realistic and emotionally devastating.

This movie surprised me in a positive way. It's quite heavy and i'd appreciate if it was maybe half an hour shorter (perhaps get rid of the way too explicit sex scenes). But overall, love the songs, love the camera, costumes and sets, Jo Ingsuk is hot qnd the longer i watched, the more attractive he became. I also liked that homosexuality was not really an..issue here? Like nobody threw homophobic remarks in there. Unlike some people, i found the ending perfect (so i guess it's a matter of taste). Just don't watch this if you want happy bl story, it's really not.

Love or lust...Intricate and layered with jealousy, fear, passion and a lot of bad decisions

This historical movie tells the story of Hong Rim, the Chief of King's guard and his relationship with King Gong Min who ruled in the latest half of the 14th century of the Goryeo Dynasty. I find very interesting the period of history in which the film is set as well as all the the romantic premise which build up in a gut-wrenching love story.

Story-wise, I really enjoyed the imbalance of power in the relationship and in the romance. Nothing is as simple as it seems as the feelings get more and more intricated and layered with jealousy, fear, passion and a lot of bad decisions (which frustrated me a lot as they were not super logical sometimes)...It was really love and lust leading to madness in a heart breaking way.
Despite it relative long length, I found the pacing of the movie quite good. My only regret is that we do not spend enough time on the beginning of the relationship between Hong Rim and King Gong Min: I would have loved to see their kinship and affinity evolve in something more, especially with the difference in status in the context of the court. The ending was very satisfying to me because the final actions of the protagonists made it very clear to me as to where their affections were truly lying. I am convinced that it is NOT what was said that is the most telling regarding the romance but rather what was left unsaid and rather shown by the characters.

The acting performance for the three main roles was pretty solid. The trio of Zo In Sung (as Hong Rim), Joo Jin Mo (as King Gong Min) and Song Ji Hyo (as Queen No Guk) worked very well together. I found the relationship between the two male leads the most compelling one but Song Ji Hyo hold her own quite well in these very tortuous relations. Regarding the secondary characters, it was quite good overall, no obvious stand out on the support roles with the exceptions of some of the guards. It was really nice to see some familiar faces acting as secondary characters: Song Joong Ki, Noh Min Woo, Jo Jin Woong ,Yeo Jin Goo and Park Sung Hoon.

The production value was really impressive, even looking at it 16 years later. The fight scenes were very good and the more gruesome parts felt very effective in conveying the violence of the story at that period of time. I loved the decors, it felt rich and well put together. The numerous (but purposeful) sex scenes were also very well filmed. I enjoyed the soundtrack, in particular the scenes were some of the characters were singing: really beautiful and poetic.

I would recommend this movie to people looking for an historical movie with a gut-wrenching love story. The romance is really interesting in the dynamics that it explores. I wish the scenario would have spend more time on some aspects of the relationship and I got frustrated by some choices made by some characters...But overall, I was very satisfied by this movie and its ending as well.

A gripping story

So after having it always appearing on my recommendations, I finally decided to watch it and really, I wasn't disappointed. This is going into my recommendations list, ofc 19+ only.
Many might think the soft porn part was unnecessary, but it actually kinda played a part in bringing the story and what the actors wanted to convey, to life.
The ending was so heartbreaking, and yet it made me smile coz the king and the general were together with no queen in sight 🙈. I know the king was kinda a pedophile but I really felt his pain when the general said that he never loved him 😭. I'm sorry but I supported the king's love over the queen's, although I know I shouldn't, with the castration and the grooming him to become his sex slave practically. The scene where the king and the general died showed so much without words.
So even if it's wrong, I loved the ending. I'd like to think they're together in death and that's what they wanted to show with that ending scene.
So, in conclusion, watch it (only if you're 19+ btw) and make your own opinions coz I'm definitely recommending this to people.

A pool of emotions one can dive into

I watched this on a whim. I didn't plan on it at all and despite the 32747 other shows on my plan-to-watch list, the synopsis of this caught my eye so much that it skipped the list.

To begin with, I was shooketh just 20 minutes into the movie because I totally did not expect it to be as explicit as it turned out to be. And to make that explicitness into something so artistic and pleasing with emotions so raw is not an easy feat that this movie could accomplish. Enough that I could not bear to skip the stuff I usually do.

The movie did end up leaving me frustrated, but for me, it is worth the turmoil it put me through for two hours. One should be in the right frame of mind to watch this, and I totally was. It is filled with angst, raw passion, and fear of loss, and it was such a beautiful depiction of the above-mentioned emotions. The political intrigue was just enough to support the main plot while not being too confusing. In my opinion, this movie was a perfect balance between romance, angst, pain, politics, and betrayal.

Definitely worth giving a try. (Make sure you are comfortable with bloodshed and nudity before you decide to give this a shot)

Disappointing and senseless

This movie wasn't worth watching. I don't understand all the good reviews, I don't get what people say that I didn't

I'm not putting a synopsis because I watched it and it should be known, instead I decided to write a review to hopefully erase this movie as a whole from my mind.

What makes this so bad?

Well, none of the relationships between the characters are healthy at all, and the only character just a bit redeemable is the king. The king is heartbroken and it makes sense, he has a motive to do what he does because he feels betrayed and invested a lot into the chief. The chief is an idiot, he is given chances and continues to deceive the king so in the end, I was ok with him dying. Honestly, I was ok with any of the characters dying, I didn't feel any attachments.

I thought to myself that maybe the chief was only lusting over the queen because he never had that experience. Instead, the movie decided that he LOVED her? I don't care if it was him only saying that, I don't want to use my brain to read into this movie more than I should. The queen and the chief didn't love each other, as much as the movie wants to convince us that they do. And how do they convince us? The queen and chief just have s*x about 1/3 of the movie, honestly, it might be more. I thought this was going to be more epic, that the budget would be utilized for stunts and action and anything worth watching. Instead, it was just about the closest thing to being p*rn as it could. It was explicit, it was beyond explicit, they made love more than they needed to and the only argument for them doing so is that it was to show how their loved progressed.

This movie.. I would say it's ok, but I can't find anything to like except the king's acting, he did a really good job. On the other hand, the characters were.. they weren't characters. It was blank and lacking and none of them had a backstory. Especially the queen, it was infuriating to see her seduce the chief knowing what could happen, and eventually when the king found out they still decided to do the deed? Why? Did they love each other? How was I supposed to know they love each other if they didn't even talk about ANYTHING? What did they want to do if they fled? It seemed the only reason they wanted to leave was to have s*x in peace. The acting for the queen was stale, her whole character wasn't a character, she was just the queen that didn't get laid only until the chief did and then she liked it so they did it as many times as they could. The chief and queen were both selfish and not worth me rooting for so I didn't.

I don't understand. It was wasted potential, but then again I don't even know what the goal of the movie was here. What was the purpose of this? The chief in the end didn't love the king and I can't say that he loved the queen because that wasn't deserved either. It left with the chief and king dying as if I was supposed to not expect that or feel bad.. it had so much love making scenes that didn't need to be there. There was NO reason that the queen and chief loved each other, they didn't talk to each other or bond over anything except making love. That's all this was, it was frustrating and felt dirty to watch undeserved love making scenes. It wasn't fun at all, it was something I wish I could erase from my mind. That's the end of my rant, I warned anyone coming into this thinking it's some sort of epic movie that's exciting and heartbreaking. This movie isn't, this movie is a waste.

Incredible, mesmerizing

There are no words fir me to adequately describe my experience watching this production. The Direction, filming and sets where well thought out to make the story alive and full of emotion. The acting was superb, fearless by every actor in the production. For myself, this is one of those films on my list of unforgettables. I seldom rewatch a show/movie and this is one that I surely will.

I did not need to see that much skin...

This is definitely not a movie to watch with your parents in the room. It is graphic. It has sex scenes, fighting swords, bloodshed and more. It is definitely not for the faint of heart.

The relationship triangle that is happening in this film makes your heart break. Watching your main character's all suffer from the internal struggle of who they love versus what is right given the social norms of their time is very interesting. It's not a genre I ever thought I'd see LGBT representation in but I am very glad this film exists.

Watch it if you want to see love and death, all in the space of 90-ish minutes

OH MY GOOOD!!!!!!!!!!

This was so unexpected!!! I did not expect this from an Asian drama, much less a K-drama.
The first thing that grabbed my attention were the sex scenes. I mean... I saw tongue in kissing scenes... breasts... naked bodies. I was shocked into silence.
Other than that though, the plot for the most part was good. The only thing I hated was the ending. It was disappointing and an almost waste to a good movie.
The king has groomed this man since childhood into being a homosexual. Now that he (the king's lover) has experienced an intimate relationship with a woman (instigated by the king) and starts catching feelings and questioning his sexuality, the king becomes jealous and practically goes into a frenzy. How can you expect to instigate a sexual relationship between two people and not expect their emotions to become involved??? Because of the king's greed and possessiveness a whole lot of people died.

emotionally devastating

There was everything in this film, action, adventure, blood, sex, raw emotion and amazing acting. I was hooked from the start! It’s not that often you come across a gay king with an insufferable jealous towards his chief of the guardn serving the king in companionship, musically and sexually. It was interesting to see the kind of activities young boys were put through in their training to be a soldier in the kings guard.
I was interested in the art aspects in this film with the king always painting with bamboo sticks or traditional brush stroke calligraphy and powder dyes in water to create their version or watercolour.
The whole film is pretty much about how personal feelings cloud a better judgement and I think it’s something I need to think about as a person too. There is a lot of emotion, strength and power in this film and it’s definitely one you could watch again.
There was a lot of depth in each character and the story was solid and consistant even though there were a few sub plots which I was happy about. Such beautiful setting and landscapes and rich in red and gold. Asian films always feel like such artwork and this definitely commends that thought.

Where Loyalty Ends and Desire Begins

A Frozen Flower* is not an easy film to watch, nor is it meant to be. Set during the late Goryeo Dynasty, the film explores the complicated relationship between a king, his loyal military commander, and the queen. What begins as a political solution to secure an heir quickly evolves into a tragic story of love, jealousy, obsession, and betrayal.

One of the film's greatest strengths is its performances. The actors bring emotional depth to characters who are trapped by duty, desire, and the expectations placed upon them by society and the throne. No one in the story is entirely innocent, yet viewers can understand the motivations and pain driving each character's choices.

Visually, the film is stunning. The costumes, palace sets, and cinematography create an atmosphere of beauty and elegance that contrasts sharply with the emotional turmoil unfolding beneath the surface. Every scene feels carefully crafted, adding to the tragic tone that hangs over the entire story.

What makes *A Frozen Flower* stand out is its willingness to explore themes rarely addressed openly in historical films. The story examines love in its many forms—love as devotion, love as possession, and love as sacrifice. It also asks difficult questions about power and whether true affection can survive within a world governed by politics and obligation.

The film is not without its weaknesses. Some viewers may find certain scenes overly graphic, and the pacing occasionally slows as the story focuses on emotional conflict rather than action. Additionally, because the characters are deeply flawed, it can be difficult to fully support any one individual throughout the film.

Despite these criticisms, *A Frozen Flower* succeeds as a tragic historical drama. It is a story filled with passion, heartbreak, and consequences. The ending leaves a lasting impression, reminding viewers that in a world ruled by power and duty, personal desires often come at a terrible cost.

This is not a lighthearted romance or a feel-good historical drama. Instead, it is a mature and emotionally complex film that stays with you long after the credits roll.

A Frozen Flower* is a visually beautiful and emotionally powerful tragedy that explores the dangerous intersection of love, loyalty, and power. While not suitable for every audience, those who appreciate serious historical dramas with strong performances and complex relationships will likely find it unforgettable.

Shocking on an unimaginable level

First of all I would like to say that of all the historical drama or movies this one left me speechless. On the first few minutes I was already shocked at an unimaginable way. I didn't see what's coming. As I stride along the story, it slowly shows the absurdity of life -- homosexuality, treason, love triangle and secret affairs. I got some confusions with the emotions maybe because I'm not able to relate so much with the homosexuality theme but still it's a really good one, maybe with less explicit scene. I think it would be better if the characters like the Chief and the Queen was able to express more of the love in a different way other than doing 'it.'

The casts are really plausible. They've done their best to give life to the characters that they portrayed. It was too convincing that I even thought they're not just acting. Blank Jihyo really shocked the hell out of me. I was watching her on Running Man and I didn't expect that her acting skill is this superb. I really commend her for that. Specially the King and the Chief, they took a very challenging role and was able to conquer it.

I really love the sound of traditional instruments on historical dramas. It gives off peace and uniqueness. It intensifies as well the theme of the story.

This might be part of my medium priority in re-watch.
