Unexpected Binge

I developed a bias towards Wuxia series from the last decade or so, but decided to try this one based on the rating from a reviewer with somewhat similar tastes. I've dropped countless of Wuxia series due to cheap-looking costumes (including hair and makeup), poor dialogue/plot, annoying FL/ML, overuse of romance, and corny special effects. But this one.. is one of those rare ones that I found myself unexpectedly binging on.

Although some of the corny is unavoidable due to the fantasy element, it was done quite tastefully in this series. I actually found myself enjoying the majority of the special effects from the action scenes. But what really made this one special was that the plot was thought-provoking and the character developments were interesting and complex. The chemistry with the cast were great and I really couldn't find any complaints about any particular character. As there are 40 episodes, it's quite difficult the summarize all of the emotions felt. Let's just say there plenty of unexpected moments, fun moments, and tear-jerking moments. I'm also super happy that the romance aspects of the series are done with maturity and it didn't manage to take over the theme.

Overall, if you're like me who has similar biases towards the Wuxia genre, I would recommend giving this one a try as an exception. They really did a great job in balancing everything and I only wish they maybe delved a little more into some of the characters' histories. You'll also enjoy this is you appreciate tactician-style characters. Despite being very different stories, the ML shares some similarities with the one from Nirvana in Fire.

Truly Beautiful and Outstanding Drama!

Where to even start with this drama. For me I didn't find not one bit of this boring from loving Luo Yun Xi's acting. This man knows how to keep his fans watching. From his facial expressions, to the way he walks, and where he makes every action scene look like a beautiful dance.

This drama follows the lead character Tang Li Ci on a journey at first you don't know what his tale is. Is he the hero or the villain, cause he comes off as a man that only cares about himself and his survival. Which isn't true at all his biggest obsession is not being able to let his senior brother go after he dies and he is determined to bring him back by any means, but first he has to get the other half of the living bound records from another senior brother that has turn to being a villain and causing chaos. I found this drama to be a very good tale of friendship and about letting go. Tang Li Ci had to learn to let go of his obsession with bringing his senior brother back. He has a hard time losing the people he cares about he really can't handle it. This drama is not a romance but I don't think that took away from this drama. Also have to comment on the actors. Had really good actors which just made it so much better, and will comment on some.

Luo Yun Xi
Shines in this drama. He was so great to watch and his costumes were beautiful. All of his fights scenes I think makes him look like he is performing a beautiful dance he moves so fluidly. Even though this didn't have romance Luo Yun Xi still showed he had chemistry with the girls in this drama. You get to see more of his emotional scenes which I also think he does so good at.

Alen Fang
Watching Alen play a truly crazy villain was not something I was expecting when watching this, but that is exactly what he was and oh my goodness did he blow it out of the water. I would love to see him do it again cause just wow. Alen even made me laugh at times with his crazy antics.

Bai Shu
Loved seeing him play another silly character. I love him they give him these roles he excels at them. My fave character for him will always be Tengshe from Love and Redemption, but I think the character he played here will be the second. He is amazing at these kind of characters.

Sebrina Chen
Also loved seeing her again the first drama I watched her in was Maiden Holmes and loved her in that. They also dolled her up so beautifully. Loved all of her costumes.

Xiao Shun Yao
Another great actor portraying his character so well, and his costumes really suited him.

I could go on and on about the actors they all were so great and deserve the credit for this drama. The scenes were also so beautiful to watch they went all out to make it look so pretty. I will put it here it does have a sad ending, but also a really good one. Though some may not agree with me.

Whispers of Fate: A Journey Through Philosophy, Love, and Destiny

Watching Whispers of Fate is like diving deeply into multiple philosophical questions, while also delighting the eyes with magnificent fight scenes. The sets and costumes are wonderful. The perfection of the channeled wind when they fall into that wind-tunnel precipice is truly impressive.

These are just a few insights I had while watching:

Already in Episode 1, there is a reflection on one’s responsibility toward those who know you. In Episodes 14 and 19, there are profound reflections on the meaning of life. Also in Episode 19, there is a rule of etiquette: “Strangers must follow the rules of the place.” I find this very appropriate for today’s world, where mutual respect is increasingly rare.

The drama shows that we do everything we can to avoid losing the ones we love. Tang Li Ci and Fang Ping Zhai are determined to change the past.

A special highlight goes to Episode 32, which is my favorite. In it, Fang Zhou’s speech is beautiful, and through it, A'Li is finally able to let go of his master, teacher, friend, and protector.

As someone from the West, where we favor happy endings, this one felt appropriate to me, since the little white fox finally ended up with his master.

As for the characters, Xi Fang Tao also deserved to be reborn, as she seemed to want redemption in the end. Princess Chong should have admitted to her master what she had done. I found her evolution into a more determined woman interesting once she was recognized as a Princess. I understand that she wanted to lessen Li Ci’s suffering when she sent the poisoned needle into him, since, after all, everything rested on his shoulders. The Sword Alliance did not have that many talents after all. Everyone ended up injured and failed to handle Fengliu Dian.

Liu Yan, to me, was always jealous of the attention Fang Zhou gave to Li Ci. He deserved to die, as he caused much damage during his journey of vengeance.

Master Shao is a great man, very wise. Pu Zhu and Wen Pao are far too inflexible.

As for Shen, I think he should have had more screen time. His friendship with Li Ci was portrayed very superficially. Chi Yun, on the other hand, showed his admiration and concern for Li Ci much more clearly.

masterclass in high-fantasy storytelling

Whisper of Fate proves a "beautiful ending" is defined by its emotional resonance rather than just a fairy-tale conclusion.

While many viewers equate satisfaction with a "happy ending," this series takes a more profound route. It concludes in a beautiful and heroic manner, centered on a selfless sacrifice—one life given to save many. This poignant finale elevates the drama to an epic tragedy that lingers long after the credits roll.

The production quality is truly beyond expectations. The cinematic effects and props are spectacular, creating a world that feels both immersive and ethereal.
Every garment is intricately crafted to reflect the status and evolution of the characters. The fight choreography is sharp and dynamic, seamlessly blending physical stunts with high-end CGI.

The strength of the script lies in its ensemble. Every character is given a backstory that is expertly weaved into the primary narrative. This attention to detail gives the world life and makes every stake feel personal.

This is a high-priority recommendation for fantasy and costume buffs who crave a balanced viewing experience. It offers a perfect blend of Suspense & Action, Angst & Humor, a very light romance - just a "sprinkle" that complements the plot without overshadowing the overarching stakes.

A Truly Hidden Gem of 2025

Tang Lici was a man of mysterious background who took shelter in Zhoudi Tower, known for its deadly music scores. Somehow after 7 years living under the tutelage of Fang Zhou, owner of Zhoudi Tower and also a renowned figure in the martial world, he was accused of killing Fang Zhou by his fellow disciple brother Liu Yan. Liu Yan slit his throat but somehow Tang Lici managed to survive and by a twist of fate, was taken in by the emperor’s father-in-law as adopted son. Since then, it has been 4 years that Liu Yan had been pursuing Tang Lici in the name of revenge. This time, Liu Yan mechanized a plot of the slaughter of people at a wedding and pinned it on Tang Lici. Tang Lici had no choice but to come out from seclusion to clear his name as he was investigated by Central Plains Sword Society - a sort of Wulin police- , encountering numerous people along the journey that would soon shape his new world other than his obsession over Fang Zhou.

Honestly when i picked this up, i was ready to drop it at any time. After all, 3 shows before it had been dropped too for various reasons. With this one, i recognized the ML was the SML in ashes of love, and boy i hated the character, and i thought he was too pale and gaunt. So yeah, since i dont really like him, i dont have a high expectation. I just chose this title out of whim, because i dont have any interesting shows to watch yet. But hell he proved me wrong. The whole production proved me wrong. The story was so engaging and fast-paced that i somehow couldnt put it down. Completed 14 episodes in under 12 hours, and all 40 episodes in under 3 days and i only put it down cuz i know i needed to sleep to function the next day!

Luo Yunxi surpassed my expectation by miles! He was awesome as the cunning yet lonesome Tang Lici with enormous inner turmoil and struggles. Tang Lici was no ordinary man, and when he first fell into this world, the good hearted Fang Zhou was the one who took him in and nursed him back to health, taught him to read and write and life values, despite the mysterious air around Tang Lici. Fang Zhou became Tang Lici’s sole reason for living and the drive for him to push through the many hurdles that came his way after the Zhoudi Tower incident. I also love how ML would outmanoevre the bad guys with his shrewd celestial brain. I remembered how i get annoyed everytime Runyu appears in Ashes of Love, but here i absolutely adore Luo Yunxi’s performance. His expressions, his lines, his body movements made sense all the way throughout. Not to mention, I totally fell in love with Tang Lici’s hair. Omg those full head of black and white at the end of those curly hair was beyond gorgeous. Though it did make the script look rather ridiculous when ML was escaping the sword society’s arrest warrant by putting a veil over his face while the whole head of hair was visible. Come on you dont come across that kind of hair on central plains anywhere else except on Tang Lici’s head, that alone is a huge-ass signature 🤣🤣 it wouldve been more convincing had they made him wear those large veiled straw hats instead of face veils.

The script was amazing, filled with philosophical lines concerning the meaning of humanity and complex interpersonal relationships between father-son, mother-son, friends, lovers and master-disciple. There was hardly any useless dialogue or draggy speeches at all. I especially liked how they manage to make the fiercest plot twists by turning unassuming characters into someone opposite its own traits at unexpected points of the storyline. One of my favourite lines was when ML admitted that Liu Yan, the SML, that Liu Yan only turned so evil due to ML’s own indulgence, due to the fact that ML had always believed he could turn SML around given the chance.

I usually get annoyed when the ML keeps getting injured or poisoned out of the blue, but with this show, it always makes perfect sense as to why ML would keep getting injured and his condition could only deteriorate with each injury. I didnt get annoyed or roll my eyes everytime the ML fall at the end of battles.

And the battles. Oh lord, i rarely praise high-CGI-neili-infused battles, but this time, they look really good and magnificient. Internal power battle in xianxia usually bore me, but the one on this show keep taunting me to want more. I totally love the Tenet-like time travel concept, and as a star wars fan, i squeled each time the mechatronic guy Qiankun came on screen with his Pacific Rim-my beast spouting laser out of its mouth zapping away all the good guys. Yeah diabolical indeed but i totally love the laser-like neili shells even though Qiankun was one of the bad guys.

I truly love Alex Fang’s portrayal of Liu Yan here. This is the first time that I saw him as a villain and he rocks! His expressions were never over the top and gosh i love his evil laugh. This character started as a good and kind hearted man with medical knowledge, but turned truly evil after a misunderstanding that he refused to straighten out. The devastation when he finally came to his senses was surreal.

The one who played Gui Mudan, the real villain behind Liu Yan was so strangely familiar but I couldnt pinpoint where I’ve seen him. Running through Jeremy Xu’s past works, I came across Royal Rumours, yeah he was the scheming prince from Royal Rumours. His facial expressions here in Whisper of Fate is exactly like of that prince, no wonder he looked so darn familiar. His face totally fits a cool, calculating villain.

And the songs!! Gosh the music scores for each scene are so perfectly matched and the themesongs got stuck into my head. I am soooo gonna add them to my playlist! Many good songs here, and a special mention of What Makes Us Humans by Jeremy Xu, the lyrics and music is so unique.

This is a great masterpiece and because i started watching with a low expectation, adding to the fact that it isnt a romance-centric piece made it come out so much better in my eyes.

On a side note, although the ending and background of the 4 brothers were vastly different from the novel, and even though in the novel Tang Lici was the only one who survived the storm, i felt that the ending in the adaptation was more impactful and memorable. Kudos to the production for that.

A real gorgeous gem very much underated in MDL.

This drama is stunning. We have here a wonderful story around friendship/ brotherhood that we gradually discover through the storyline without being dragged in boring details. The acting is so good with a special mention to Leo Luo who is acting so majestically, he fits so well in this kind of Fantasy roles and here he is stealing the limelight, and his talent really carries the show. The OST is also stirring with appropriate and entertaining pace. I also like the fact that we don’t have the show wasted in tedious love story for once.

Wonderful visuals, great costumes

Costumes are to die for! Liu Yan's character was poorly written, and Alen Fang's acting didn't help it... The story was okay, nothing innovative but plesant to watch. Tang Lici letting A-Shui go was weirdly realistic and satisfying... The whole plot could definitely get squeezed into a film, but the longer Luo Yunxi is on screen the better, could watch even 60+ episodes! :D

I would love Season 2

Luo Yunxi is definitely born for costume Xianxia drama. He's acting and elegance is top notch. The whole cast is doing the wonderful job as well as the CGI, the best I've seen so far. The only minus is the ending is too abrupt, I wish they extend it for another 2 or 6 eps 🤣🤣🤣 Yeah, I'm greedy of Tang Li Ci. And as usual, the main lead died sacrificing himself to safe the world 😭😭😭 Please, don't always kill my Luo Yun Xi's role, I'm so heartbroken. For me this drama is really2 good. If compared to TTEOTM, I prefer WOF more since the storyline is so smooth and enjoyable. Tang Li Ci, why you dieeeeeeddddd???? 😭😭😭😭😭

The ending doesn't matter, the moral value is the main course

It looks like a complex story at first, there a lot of characters with the unknown backstories about them.
But as it gets closer to the end of the drama, it will be revealed by themself.
There are a lot of plot twist that make you speechless.
Let you find it by your own, feel it, and don't let the negative talks influence you. Proove it by yourself. Believe in yourself🫶
