●There are lots of good reviews but my feelings are jotted down here.
●Its a nice movie, having humorous elements with also the growth of character. How fame and popularity sometimes blinds people is the beauty of the movie. It was done pretty well. The movie teaches you should always be done to earth and accept every flaw and beauty with grace.
●Performance was exceptional. But i cant get to the fact that ML liked the FL before, he just got swept in her beauty just like others.
●Songs were upbeat setting the mood of the scene.

A Good Watch to Pass the Time

The story of this movie is ultimately about a young woman who comes to love herself in world where toxic beauty standards persist at every corner. What I enjoyed about this film is that we don't always like our protagonist, in fact, we even find ourselves frustrated and angry with her although we understand her motivations. As we travel through this messy journey of belonging, love, and acceptance, I think it's fair that we learn a bit about ourselves too and how we want to feel and be perceived as beautiful.

This movie is much more relatable than you think. An underrated movie for sure.

200 Pounds Beauty really hits home for me. This movie managed to pull off some comedic and serious scenes very well. The main character has been pressured to look beautiful because she doesn't meet beauty standards. You can see the ACTUAL struggles of constantly being known for your weight, which made the main character much more relatable than I thought.

Also, even when she manages to give herself a full-body makeover, you can still see her personality there. It's wholesome, warm, and sweet. This movie also subtly pulls off how people see attractive people, overweight people, and people who've done plastic surgery (through jokes). It's still perky and has its charm but manages to remain honest and true to the theme.

However, the drawbacks of the movie were the male character lead. I understand that not all male leads have to be good, but his mindset towards Gang Han Na before and after doesn't sit well with me. However, I think near the end I see a slight change of growth, but I'm not too sure. Nonetheless, it's a nice change of pace.

Also, the main theme of the movie slightly irks me as TheJ commented. When people realize she was fat before, they didn't mention that being called fat or being body-shamed isn't okay. It's as if people only like Gang Ha Na because she became pretty - which is uncalled for. Other than that, I think this movie is a good representation of overweight people (especially women) in Korean society.

Story: It was good, other than that last bit.

Acting/Cast: Good, but the main character's lead felt a bit unnatural here and there. Other than that, I think it was fine.

Music: It was great and fit in with the movie, especially the last scene.

Rewatch Value: I would watch it, it's perky and wholesome. I might likely do it for next summer.

Overall, a strong movie with a strong value. 8/10 - would watch it again.

Very predictable and just okay

7.5/10 is my rating. This is a 2006 Korean romantic comedy movie that runs for 120 minutes. It is based on a Japanese manga entitled “Kanna’s Big Success.”

Hannah King is a ghost singer for popular K-pop idol Ammy. She is overweight but has a beautiful voice. She further uses her musical talent to make money as a phone sex operator. Hannah is in love with the music Director, Han Sang-jun, and thinks he might return her feelings despite her unattractive appearance. The Director is very handsome and seems to be very nice and pays a lot of attention to Hannah. One day, when she is about to confess her feelings, she overhears a conversation between the producer and his star. Ammy played a mean trick on Hannah and Sang-jun was telling her not to do that because they needed Hanna for her voice. To Hanna‘s dismay she hears him tell Ammy that they are just using her and he doesn’t really care if she hurts her feelings just not to do it in a way that she would leave. Hannah is devastated and decides to disappear and get a complete makeover with plastic surgery. The surgeon, Lee Kong-hak, at first does not want to because it is so drastic that it would put her life in danger. Ironically, the plastic surgeon is one of Hannah‘s phone sex customers so she is able to bribe him to do it despite his better judgment. While Hannah is gone Ammy’s career flounders because while she is pretty and able to dance she’s not at all able to sing and they cannot find anybody with the same level of voice talent to replace Hannah. After a year of healing, Hannah reemerges as Jenny an Korean American from California. She decides to audition as Amy’s ghost singer again but her beauty lands her her own contract. She no longer needs to hide behind the curtain. Her change was so drastic that no one recognize her at first not even her best friend, Park Jung-Min, . At first it seems she will get everything she wants. But beauty and fame do not wind up being all she thought they would be. Does she still want the love of a guy who couldn’t love her for who she was?

Kim Ah-joong as Kang Han-na / Jenny
Joo Jin-mo as Han Sang-jun (Director and Han-na’s one sided love interest)
Kim Hyun-sook as Park Jung-min (Han-na’s best friend)
Lee Han-wi as Plastic surgeon Lee Kong-hak
Ji Seo-yun as Ammy

spoiler ? I like the premise of this and found it interesting. What I wanted to see though was more of a revenge plot line. It really wasn’t that it wasn’t like she decided to have him fall in love with her and then dump him. She also didn’t elect to make it big using her beauty just to show people. I don’t know how true to life it is but it is a bit ironic that cultures can be so hard on ugly people and fat people yet equally hard when they take drastic measures to try to change it. Makes it a bit like dammed if you do damned if you don’t. I know in my culture plastic surgery is mostly accepted especially for certain professions the only thing I think there’s still a bit of a stigma against breast changes. Not as many people elect plastic surgery as there isn’t as much pressure in general to be perfect unless you’re in a job such as modeling or acting. I did not feel like it was much of a romance because it was pretty clear she would never get back with the guy and it would’ve been disappointI got if she would have. I would’ve liked it better if another guy had emerged and loved her for who she was and there was a big confession or something like that. I liked that she changed the axis of her success by being honest about her surgery and carrying her career on the merits of who she was in general. But I really wanted to see a romance and it just really wasn’t an element in this.

I loved the awareness of how people who are obese usually can't find love or are bullied in school. I'm also glad of the awareness of how their life changes when they make that change of losing weight and because of the weight loss, they go in for plastic surgery. We see more of that these days. Those who do change grieve their old self and then some are just happy with being obese. This was a cute story and I really liked it. Thank you to the cast and the writers to bring this to the front and hope that more people will watch this.

Body over talent!?

We can say that the objective of the movie was like a 5 stars (although some stuffs on the moovie were like "I wish she don't loved him that much"...)

This movie is kinda old but explains so well the life that we live now . People using like a fake porfil or filters to not show their faces when they are not just a face or much more than a body.

In a overall I reallly liked this movie.

I really wish the world to change. And is sad that doesn´t exists more movies about issues like this one.

I really liked the premise of the movie(despite it's overdone trope as a plot) and I really liked Joo jin-mo's role. I like the whole “ugly girl turns pretty and becomes successful” trope, however I don't really understand the underlying message of the movie. Was it supposed to shed a light on how shallow society is? Was it promoting self-love? Ultimately I think the movie could've tried not to be so surface-level, but movies with these kinds of plots don't go very far. I still expected a little more. I still like this movie and I’m willing to give a second watch to it.

This is for the first time I am writing a review!!

As, I said earlier this is my first review in MDL. This is quite an underrated movie. Watch it, I believe you will also feel the same. The movie is quite down to earth and the ending is not hasty or boring at all. Till the end I could find myself crying and loving the story. The acting, the story everything about it made me overwhelmed. Although the character of the ML didn't do justice much. Shown a jerk from the beginning, suddenly his character shift jolted the ambience. But still the story will keep you glued.

Cliched? Yes. But still worth a watch?? Totally.

STORY -

There's nothing truly special about the plot. It's got your usual sprinkling of cliches when it comes to stories like this, but what made this one truly special was how utterly loveable Hanna was as a main character. The sincerity in her character made each moment shine in a way that it might not have otherwise with a less interesting character. In all honesty, the problem with this movie was the fact that Hanna was too loveable. Now, before you go 'wtf', I'll explain... I feel as if she was given so much love by the writers that all the other characters suffered as a result because wow, were they all seriously unlikeable!

Okay, I backtrack... I did really like the main male lead and there was wonderful chemistry between him and Hanna, but I feel like there was a lot that was left unexplained by the end. While Hanna had her moment to really let out her emotions and develop as a character, there wasn't that kind of epiphany for him. Like he did a crappy thing in the beginning of the movie, which as the audience, we're to assume that it was all a ruse, but it was never truly explained in the movie. I just wish there was a moment where he had to face up to what he did and try to explain his actions to her.

But my gosh, the best friend character? Actually the most toxic friendship ever. She was HORRIBLE to Hanna, both when she was fat and when she was skinny. She was constantly mean and completely unsupportive. It's really no wonder that Hanna went to such a dark place. She has no support system whatsoever. I hated her best friend so much. And the 'female villain' character? Like... literally, what role did she even play in the movie? She was there for like a minute and caused a bit of ruckus, but then she just disappeared.

ACTING -

Fantabulous!! Kim Ah Joong was honestly amazing as Hanna. Like I said above, the reason I love this movie was solely because of her. The raw emotion in her face made those heartbreaking scenes even more painful, like you could feel what she was going through. And likewise, when she was happy and smiled, it made you happy too. That's the sign of a great actress! I'm totally going to go search her and watch more of her dramas/movies. I'm in love!

Joo Jin Mo was also really great in his role even his character needed to be a little more fleshed out, but I really really enjoyed the way he portrayed him. And he really did have great chemistry with KAJ. They were so good together!

MUSIC -

That Ave Maria song is stuck in my head right now so I'll say it was awesome!! Also, the song Hanna writes and sings?? WOW!! It's beautiful! Loooooved it so much! She has a fantastic voice!

REWATCH?? I don't know. I rarely rewatch anything. The only ones I would have a rating of 10 so probably not. But it's not to say this wasn't good though!

OVERALL... I say just give it a go! It's cute, sweet, heartwarming and you'll fall head over heels for Kim Ah Joong!

I watched this one a long time ago when I was so much younger, and I remember liking this quite a lot. However, now that I think about it the story is quite depressing? I'm not really sure what word to describe it, but I feel like it kinda gives the audience a little bit of pressure about nowadays standards of beauty and how appearances matter a lot. The movie nevertheless is really entertaining and you can definitely watch this when you want to watch something light to binge. If I'm not mistaken it's about a fat girl who wants to be a singer but her appearance prevent her to, so instead she became the "ghost" singer who sings for the supposedly "singer" behind the stage. Then the "singer" and her liking the same guy but ended up being disgraced in front of everyone and finally decided to have a full plastic surgery and become the goddess-like kinda of girl. The rest you can watch for yourself LOL.

This movie was daebak, I mean basically its a fat girl with a golden voice who is being used to promote some beautiful chics album by lipsincing. Hanna is inlove. The director but finds out he only used her so she get plastic surgery and comes back. It was funny and emotional. The last five minutes of the movie got me balling coz it was so emotional. Really great movie

Anyone can easily relate to Hanna. Admit it or not, we’ve once felt ugly, used and useless. I’m pretty sure you’ve been humiliated for once in your life and had felt really down because of it. Hanna had to endure that for as long she can remember—and she gets that treatment all because she’s fat.

I like the message the movie wants to impart to its viewers. Beauty is not only what you see outside, it should be inside and out. A person should be atoned with himself/herself. Love yourself before anything else.
