A Nostalgic, Heartwarming High School Romance

"Love Untangled" is such a sweet, nostalgic ride. It reminded me of the warm, simple charm of ‘90s high school dramas that I grew up loving. The main character, Se Ri, is so relatable with her hair struggles and big-hearted attempts to confess her feelings. Gong Myung’s portrayal of the supportive boyfriend is everything, seriously, K-drama needs more characters like him. I also loved the message about self-love and staying true to yourself, which felt really refreshing. It’s just the kind of feel-good drama you watch when you want to smile without thinking too hard. Sure, the last bit had an unnecessary misunderstanding that kind of dragged it down, but overall, it was an adorable, peaceful watch that left me with all the warm fuzzies. Definitely one I’d revisit when I’m in the mood for some nostalgic, heartwarming romance.

Park Se-Ri (Shin Eun-Soo) è una ragazza all'ultimo anno di scuola che affronta il grande cruccio di avere capelli crespi e ricci, in un mondo di perfetti capelli lisci senza una piega. Li detesta e sembra quasi che essi siano responsabili di qualsiasi cosa vada storta nella sua vita. Nonostante ciò però, Se-Ri è una ragazza allegra e ottimista, con amici sempre pronti ad aiutarla e una cotta enorme per il bellone della scuola (non così bello in realtà), tale Kim Hyeon (Cha Woo-Min). Lo guarda da lontano, alimentata nella sua illusione da tutto il gruppetto delle sue amiche, più fuori di testa di lei. Mi hanno ricordato tantissimo delle quindicenni che vivono nel loro mondo fatto di cuoricini e illusioni, di cotte campate in aria per un saluto e la mente piena di sciocchezze che sembrano immensamente importanti a quell'età. Un giorno, mentre è in mare a nuotare, Se-Ri vede un ragazzo annegare e corre in suo soccorso, salvandogli la vita. Quello stesso ragazzo si rivela successivamente un compagno di classe proveniente da Seoul. Han Yun-Seok (Gong Myung) ha una storia difficile alle spalle, un passato fatto di violenze da parte del padre, che lui e la madre hanno provato ad evitare scappando a Busan. Lui arriva con una gamba rotta, lo sguardo tormentato e diffida di tutti, anche quando Se-Ri gli si avvicina, non solo a causa del padre ma anche della precedente scuola e del bullismo subito. I due quindi cominciano a passare moltissimo tempo insieme, perché la madre di lui promette a Se-Ri di farle la lisciatura magica gratis se si prenderà cura del figlio, ma ben presto è chiaro a tutti quanto l'amicizia di quella ragazza strana e sopra le righe faccia bene a Yun-Seok e ai suoi traumi. Frequentando lei e i suoi amici, rifiorisce, impara a sorridere ancora e diventa a tutti gli effetti un membro del loro piccolo club. L'amicizia con Se-Ri però si trasforma velocemente in amore e anche se lei sembra ancora decisa ad andare dietro a Hyeon, alla fine capisce di amare Yun-Seok e i due si mettono insieme. Ovviamente non può andare tutto liscio, figuriamoci se un film adolescenziale non può spezzarmi il cuore! Quando Se-Ri sta per confessare il suo amore a Yun-Seok accade il fattaccio. Sua madre si reca a Seoul (nessuna spiegazione del perché) e viene picchiata quasi a morte dal padre, perciò finisce in ospedale e il ragazzo si trova costretto a una scelta: andare in America dalla zia e salvare la sua famiglia dal pazzo genitore o rimanere e rischiare la vita. Siamo negli anni novanta perciò telefoni cellulari, email e messaggini ancora erano un vago ricordo e solo le persone abbienti potevano permetterseli, quindi Se-Ri non riesce a contattare il fidanzato. Preoccupata si reca a Seoul dove ascolta una conversazione strappalacrime tra Yun-Seok e la madre. Capendo di essere il principale motivo per cui il ragazzo non vuole partire, decide di lasciarlo con un messaggio in segreteria da spezzare il cuore e farmi versare un sacco di lacrime (ammetto che potrebbe essere stato il ciclo a provocare il pianto a dirotto). Ora, anni dopo, lei è all'università, ma non ha mai dimenticato il suo primo vero amore, rimanendo single convinta. Gli amici però le organizzano un appuntamento al buio a cui lei non vuole partecipare. Cerca di andarci, di farsi coraggio, ma all'ultimo non riesce e se ne va in spiaggia, dove scopre che l'appuntamento al buio non è altro che Yun-Seok, tornato dall'America. Momento di pianti e abbracci e i due tornano insieme.
E vissero felici e contenti.
Ora, la trama è davvero basica, un po' sciocca e a tratti scontata. Non ci sono particolari colpi di scena, non c'è una struttura arzigogolata di tradimenti, bugie e dolori, ma solo due ragazzi che si innamorano gradualmente, che imparano a volersi bene un giorno alla volta, essendoci l'uno per l'altra, spalleggiandosi e divertendosi insieme. Eppure è un film carino, che scorre via velocemente portando con sé le note nostalgiche della nostra infanzia e adolescenza, riportandoci alla mente com'era avere diciassette anni e pensare che non avremmo mai più amato come in quel momento. Ho sorriso guardando questo gruppo di pazzi combinarne di tutti i colori, ma sempre insieme, spalleggiandosi e insegnando a Yun-Seok cosa significhi la vera amicizia, divertendomi per le loro scorribande. È un drama banale per certi versi e anche se ho versato qualche lacrima, non significa che non abbia delle grosse falle nella trama, che potevano sicuramente essere gestite meglio. Sappiamo che Se-Ri ha una gemella ma la vediamo due volte in croce, non ci viene spiegato minimamente il suo rapporto con lei, né quasi capiamo quella che sembra una rivalità appena accennata con lei. Non sappiamo assolutamente niente delle sue amiche e non ci viene fornito un quadro della vita di Yun-Seok dopo che lei l'ha lasciato. È andato in America? Che ne è stato di suo padre? Perché è tornato? Si è diplomato ed è andato all'università? Tutte domande senza risposta, che personalmente mi hanno lasciato l'amaro in bocca. Come sempre continuo a pensare che i film non siano affatto il forte dei coreani e che sarebbe meglio si limitassero a fare serie. Tra l'altro qui c'era il potenziale per otto puntate divertenti, ma si sa che tendono a non darmi mai ascolto! Povera me!
Comunque se avete voglia di qualcosa di leggero e nostalgico ve lo consiglio. E soprattutto attenti ai cameo!

Light and Sweet

Love Untangled isa sweet, funny, and little bit heartfelt movie that had me both smiling and tearing up by the end. The story balances lighthearted moments with bit of emotional aspect making it a decent watch.

If I had to nitpick, the “self-sacrifice breakup” after the hospital scene felt a little predictable, and I wasn’t a fan of how the movie leaned into the idea that straight hair is prettier. While I loved that the female lead eventually embraced her natural curls, I wish that positive representation had been there from the beginning.

That said, these are minor flaws in an otherwise good film. The friendship, humor, and emotional depth make Love Untangled one of the feel-good movies. it's perfect when you want to watch something that's light and fun 😊

Love is About Precious Moments!

True love is about absolute vulnerability, and frankly, there really isn’t a time when this is more apparent than a first love. The film perfectly captures the social awkwardness of first love, which is a big reason why this movie works so well.

Park Se Ri is a young high school student who is enormously infatuated with the most popular boy is school, along with half the female persuasion! She has one problem, or at least, she thinks she does: her hair, which seems to be an eternal defiance as it’s so curly that she can’t stand it. Of course, she firmly believes that her hair is the reason why Kim Hyeon won’t take an interest. One of the biggest mistakes that people make is the assumption that they have to change in order to please someone else. This is never more apparent than when you’re a teenager, because everything revolves around vain attempts to win over someone of the opposite sex.

Park Se Ri is a giddy and vivacious girl, who isn’t depressed by her hair, but simply views it as an obstacle. She is warm and friendly and has a great circle of friends. Living in Busan, her favorite pastime is swimming in the ocean at her “secret spot,” a spot only shared by Kim Hyeon.

As Park Se Ri is swimming, Han Yeon Seok happens upon her clothes, which are neatly folded on the jetty. He picks up Park Se Ri’s name tag as he watches her swim. The wind sends her shirt into the water with Han Yeon Seok falling in after it! The problem is, he can’t swim, and Park Se Ri ends up saving his life and pulling him to shore, despite a broken leg, which he likely smashed into the rocks.

Han Yeon Seok is a quiet boy, whose mother owns a hair salon, which advertises that she uses a “magical formula” to straighten hair. However, the cost is expensive, and Park Se Ri decides to befriend and help Han Yeon Seok, in order to get a discount on having her hair done. Things are difficult for Han Yeon Seok, trying to handle his crutch, his backpack, and even his umbrella when it rains.

Things are somewhat predictable, which isn’t always a bad thing, as we know that Han Yeon Seok likes Park Se Ri. However, he knows that he’s not the object of Park Se Ri’s affections. Nevertheless, he does what any true friend would do, despite his feelings: he helps Park Se Ri, even securing a spot in Study Hall so that Park Se Ri can maybe sit with Kim Hyeon. I don’t know many teenagers who are this selfless. Han Yeon Seok is a true, selfless romantic!

It soon becomes apparent that Han Yeon Seok will simply do whatever it takes to make Park Se Ri happy. While he obviously likes her, he has no ulterior motives in his actions. In other words, he’s not doing these things to win her over, but simply to make her happy. People should take note that this is what love really is. No expectations. Simply small acts of kindness that let the person know that you’re thinking of them.

Just as Park Se Ri is ready to tell Kim Hyeon how she feels, she realizes that the person who has truly captured her heart is Han Yeon Seok. He’s always been there for her, helped her, and gone out of his way to make sure her needs are taken care of.

Just as they begin dating, we find that Han Yeon Seok has been living a pretty tough life, with an abusive and demanding father that his mother has tried to keep him from. In fact, when Han Yeon Seok walked out to the jetty that day, he was ready to commit suicide, which he confesses to a shocked Park Se Ri.

Park Se Ri enlists the help of her friends to write, “Se Ri loves Han Yeon Seok” on the beach, but he’s quickly called away to Seoul upon finding out that his mother is badly hurt, and he learn that his father savagely beat her, and even demands that Han Yeon Seok return to Seoul. Han Yeon Seok’s mother knows that their only option is to move to America to live with his aunt, otherwise, they will never be free.

Park Se Ri hurries to Seoul to find out what’s happened, after she hasn’t heard from Han Yeon Seok, and listens outside of his mother’s hospital room to find out that they’re moving.

It’s hard to judge Park Se Ri too harshly as she leaves a voicemail message, breaking up with Han Yeon Seok. We know she‘s trying to be noble and to let him go, but unfortunately, her act is done out of fear, rather than love. Otherwise, she would have told him the truth.

What makes her act harder for her to swallow, that she finds an album he’s made for her, filled with pictures and sharing his feelings for her. It’s such a sweet and powerful gift that reminds Park Se Ri that Han Yeon Seok has only ever loved her unconditionally.

The movie does such a great job of teaching us that love is about precious moments. It’s about the little things we do to let that person know how we feel. Whether it’s making crane eggs with messages, making an album, getting that person the one gift they crave (in this case, the snow globe), or perhaps the greatest gift of all: letting that person know that they are already perfect, and that they don’t have to change anything! I loved how Han Yeon Seok “botched” Park Se Ri’s hair as he’s washing it. It was his feeble way of letting her know that she doesn’t have to change anything.

This film can be a great way for young people to learn how to treat the ones they love, but it can also serve as a reminder to those who have been in a relationship for years that it doesn’t take much effort to let the other person know how much you love them. It takes a little bit of effort and a lot of imagination!

"Love Untangled" acerta no romance, mas erra no drama

"Eu fiz um ovinho para cada vez que pensei em você."

Love Untangled é um filme leve e extremamente agradável, que acerta muito ao entregar um romance adolescente simples e fofo. O roteiro do filme constrói de forma tão delicada a relação entre Park Se-ri e Han Yoon-seok que o casal se torna incrivelmente autêntico e envolvente.

Conseguimos sentir o amor e a conexão dos protagonistas florescerem em cada cena, demonstrando um encaixe perfeito. O desenvolvimento individual de cada personagem também é notável: Park Se-ri é a onda de esperança que resgata Han Yoon-seok do caos de sua vida, e, em contrapartida, ele a ajuda a abraçar e gostar de si mesma. Essa jornada mútua é o ponto da obra que realmente conquista o espectador.

No entanto, o filme peca ao abordar o drama familiar do protagonista. Essa subtrama parece pouco desenvolvida e deixada de escanteio ao longo de toda a história, resultando em um conflito dramático exagerado no final.

Por ter sido negligenciado, o desfecho repentino — a partida de Han Yoon-seok — falha em causar a sensação de aflição que deveria. O drama não parece real, soa apenas como um artifício forçado e sem criatividade para gerar um obstáculo na vida do casal e dramatizar o encerramento. É um detalhe que prejudica o impacto emocional da reta final, servindo apenas como um empecilho superficial e inorgânico para o relacionamento.

overly used plot but a cute version

Honestly, it’s not a bad movie. It’s actually quite enjoyable, but the biggest issue for me is that the plot is very overused. After a while, it kind of loses its charm because the story feels very familiar.
That being said, it’s still a nice movie, and I think people who haven’t seen this type of story before might enjoy it much more than I did.
Overall, it was fun to watch, and one thing that really stood out to me was the theme around curly hair. That part actually resonated with me a lot.

As a millennial who grew up seeing ads on TV constantly telling us that curly hair was messy or dry and that was it was a " problem" that we needed silky straight hair to look pretty, this movie brought back a lot of memories. The way it touched on that insecurity felt very real and relatable, and I enjoyed how the movie brought back something that so strongly defined beauty back in the day.

The reason I say the plot isn’t very original is because it’s the kind of storyline you’ve probably seen before. The movie follows a girl who has a crush on a guy, and her friends help her build the courage to confess her feelings. During a school trip, she’s about to confess to him, but in that moment she realizes she’s actually in love with her best friend instead. They start dating, but things don’t stay simple. The best friend has serious family issues that force him to leave and disappear from her life. Years later, she still hasn’t moved on, and then he suddenly reappears, and their love story continues.

It’s one of those plots where you can pretty much predict what’s going to happen because we’ve seen similar stories many times before.
Even so, the movie is still a light and enjoyable watch. It may not be the most original story, but it has some relatable moments and a nostalgic feeling that makes it worth watching if you’re in the mood for something simple and sweet.
