It's Fine - That's the Highest Compliment I can Give It

You ever watched a story and found yourself thinking, 'had this aired at a different time, or perhaps if I were a different personI'd have liked (tolerated) it better?' When this started airing, I thought I'd love it. I left myself a note at the end of episode 2 stating how much I enjoyed how the plot and setting both reminded me of 'Business Proposal' & 'Welcome to Samdal-ri'. Dramas that, while I thoroughly enjoyed, had (and still get) scathing reviews.

The scathing comments kept coming in, and for the initial 5 episodes, I tuned them out. The show worked for me, and I like what I like, so whatever. Screw what the naysayers were peddling. However, after episode 6, I started slowly siding with the masses.😭

Let's start with what I liked
🍄‍🟫The comedy - They did have some funny bits. Did I find myself laughing to the point I lost my breath or had tears running down my face? No. But they did manage to get several chuckles out of me.

🍄‍🟫References to previous dramas - They had Anh Hyo Seop on the team, and they decided to milk that for all it was worth. They had multiple references to 'Business Proposal' -some obvious, some not-, as well as K-pop Demon Hunters. I also believe that the sprinkler kiss in the mushroom greenhouse was a little nod to 'King the Land.' That's my kind of fanservice and I was very happy about it.

🍄‍🟫The live selling aspect - This is purely based on the fact that it's a niche interest of mine. I kept wishing (and still do wish) that they gave us a deeper look into that. Because 2 reasons
a. It serves a particular interest of mine.
b. It showcases a much different career path than what we're used to in dramas

🍄‍🟫The villagers and Dam Ye Jin's 2 coworkers - The villagers' r/ship with Mechoori was quite endearing to watch - you know, b4 they turned on him. I liked that tsundere r/ship he had with them. I loved how Dam Ye Jin and her coworkers remained friends, and they had her back despite her being kicked out after the scandal. They worked well together

My Frustrations
🍄‍🟫Noble Idiocy - Ah! The Achilles heel of many a Kdrama (Cdramas and Jdramas included).
So both characters are struggling with things in their past. Ordinarily, I would be empathetic; however, I found myself struggling in this case. If you look objectively at both their past traumas, any reasonable person would at least suspect a setup. Even without damning evidence against the other party.

Based on that, the burden they chose to carry (because, yes, this was very much a choice, and a bad one at that) really made no sense to me. I understand when authors and screenwriters wanna write green flag, pure characters, who feel deeply, but it comes to a point that..... Nah man.

🍄‍🟫The therapy debate (or, rather, the lack thereof)
Our mains needed some serious therapy to help deal with the issues of the past. But, despite being well off enough to afford it, no one suggests, considers, or seeks it. She, abuses sleeping pills to the point of detrimental side effects and is a workaholic. He, on the other hand, hides, becoming a corporate life recluse in an idyllic farming village.

I would want to yell at this drama for this one, but this is an overarching Kdrama issue - not one specifically tied to this one show. Therapy is for the birds in dramas. Depression, suppressed trauma, and other mental health issues are fixed by copious amounts of alcohol (I'm looking at you, Doctor Slump), comeuppance, and the amazing power of love... sigh

🍄‍🟫How do time and distance work in this world?
In the 1st (?) ep when she has to go to the village to meet him, it takes the better part of the morning. She also mentioned that she needed to leave the village early as she had a broadcast later that night. When they started meeting daily so he could give her the meds, they showed on the navigation that he'd have to drive about 2, maybe 2.5 hrs to get back to Seoul. This is at around 1/2 am, when one would assume there's no traffic.

Now, based on those instances, can someone tell me how this man got from the village to Seoul and managed to save her from almost getting run over that one night? Can he teleport? Could his car achieve speeds of light speeds and they never told us? I hate it when seemingly turn off your brains shows make me turn my brain back on. You need to find a balance with the absurd, unbelievable nonsense. I can only gaslight myself so much

🍄‍🟫The sleepwalking and the sleep phone calls - Went on for too damn long

🍄‍🟫 I wish we had gotten her mother's side of the story.
Something more than 'I will sabotage and be rude to my daughter for years after the tabloids said that she took a bribe to sabotage my career - and she said she did in a heated moment.' I think the story about a woman choosing a career over being a mother is such an interesting one.

We rarely see these types of stories. It sucks that they never explored it. I would've liked to see her internal battle/struggle with this vs the trauma on the child, coz both sides are valid. We only get to see how Dam Ye Jin was hurt, but never quite the mom's side. But perhaps this particular drama wasn't the best vessel for such a deep and nuanced conversation

🍄‍🟫The romance/chemistry - I didn't get butterflies or swoon. Were they cute? Sure. But while they told me they were in love and they acted as people in love, I didn't buy into it. Into their chemistry.

This is in comparison to dramas like 'Filling for Love' and 'My Royal Nemesis'.

As I type this, the former is 2 episodes from the finale, and so far, I have loved the chemistry between the main characters. I bought into their journey to each other and the romance. They are swoonworthy and spicy. In the latter drama, both of them are crazy. We are halfway through airing, so they have every chance to fuck it up (fingers crossed they don't), but their journey so far is more on the giggle, kick your feet side.

Now having this show air in tandem with the other two... yeah, not a fair fight. The romance and chemistry in this were certainly and glaringly lacking.

🍄‍🟫Final Thoughts🍄‍🟫
While it did start with the potential to be good in my eyes, the plot, pacing, and absurdity of some choices and sequences put me off the show. IMO, skip it. But if you wanna try it, perhaps watch it as a background noise drama. It has some good, but they are overshadowed by the bad.

Bias is forming...........

What kind of a bias? Something that's been plaguing Kdramas for a loooooong time and definitely a major weakness. I'm talking about the villains. Most specifically, the reasons WHY they become villains and/or WHY they target ppl and affiliations. Because it makes for the weakest and lamest traumas that either they or other characters are afflicted with~
300 yrs ago your great great great second cousins aunt gave the dog a chicken leg today was supposed to go to my great great great grandpa's nephews cat which is why I cursed them to be allergic to chicken until my wrath is spent, lol, ridiculous shite like that is ruining dramas~
It didn't help that FL felt responsible for something asinine w/o any real reason too and allowed it to destroy and shape her entire life. Didn't help that her own fam mistreated her because of incidents behind her control. A step sister raising hell and causing untold pain to a step sibling who loved her because of a self inflicted inferioty complex. Another side story following the same pattern. Ugh. Here we have the ML of a company whose friend and business partner felt hurt over another partner and company head that thought he'd make a better business leader, so butthurt guy sabotaged and destroyed the company causing the head to suicide and the ML to take the blame which led to a fallout tricking down to the FLs story and her trauma~
Lame bs all around, we see idiotic things making villains and it's really not hard to find things much more worthy than this. But like I said, this plagues Kdramas in the worst way. It shuts me down which is why I said bias. We saw a few scenes of amusement but it didn't shake the rinse and repeat horrible back stories that are being used to shape dramas. Check it out if you want. I say pass~

It's one of those shows where you can predict 90% of what's going to happen after a couple of episodes.
The villains and twists related to them are forced and do not connect too well with the rest of the "story".
What is even more forced and cheesy in the worst way is the finale, where everyone gets what they deserve and everything is a bed of roses.

Every couple is obvious from the first glance and their every interaction when they are seemingly beating around the bush is only making it more awkward and frustrating to watch.
Sure, the visuals of the main couple are stunning and their chemistry is quite decent, but we don't get to enjoy too much of these good scenes with only them, and honestly any amount of that would not be enough to save this show.

Comedy ranges from really weak to screaming in laughter funny. The latter could be a lifeboat here, if only it wasn't so scarce to make space for more pointless attempts at drama.

Not recommended for anyone, since there are thousands of similar shows which are much better written and could actually surprise you or evoke emotions, unlike this one, which is at best just mildly sweet and decently funny with nothing else to offer.

Female lead is annoying

I found the female lead annoying af ..
She is mean and storyline is draggy ..
Nonsense illogical..
Although male lead has done his part really well.
Ughh i tried giving this drama a chance but i couldn't bear it.. 😫

Sold Out on You starts with an interesting premise and a talented cast, but unfortunately, it fails to deliver a compelling viewing experience. Despite its attempts to blend romance, comedy, and emotional storytelling, the drama struggles with inconsistent writing and weak character development.

One of the biggest issues is the screenplay. The plot often feels scattered, with several unnecessary subplots that distract from the main story. Instead of building meaningful tension and emotional depth, many episodes rely on repetitive misunderstandings and predictable twists. As a result, the narrative becomes slow and frustrating rather than engaging.

The lead characters, while portrayed by capable actors, are not given enough depth to make viewers truly invested in their journey. Their relationship develops unevenly, making some emotional moments feel forced rather than natural. Supporting characters are also underutilized, often appearing only to move the plot forward without contributing anything memorable.

Another major drawback is the pacing. Several episodes feel stretched, with scenes that add little value to the overall story. Important conflicts are either resolved too quickly or dragged on for too long, creating an imbalance that affects the drama's flow. The tonal shifts are also confusing; the show jumps between light-hearted comedy and serious emotional moments without a smooth transition.

Visually, the drama is pleasant and well-produced, but strong cinematography alone cannot compensate for its storytelling weaknesses. While there are occasional heartfelt moments and decent performances, they are not enough to overcome the lack of focus in the script.

Overall, Sold Out on You is a disappointing drama that had the potential to be much better. With stronger writing, better pacing, and more developed characters, it could have been a memorable romance. Instead, it feels like a missed opportunity that may leave many viewers unsatisfied and struggling to stay invested until the end.

Disappointed

Wanted to like this, was excited for it to drop but what on earth happened?

Side characters from the village probably carried this show. Without the quirks it would have been flatter than Stanley. The girl in the shop though who just hated FL for most the show… annoying. Two faced. Leads… zero chemistry. Never felt sparks or the feels. So that was a waste. Not sure FL should be doing romance, its like there was no effort made for anything in that department. And honestly why do these countryside based dramas a) can zip into Seoul in a matter of minutes b) fixate around an item (potato or mushroom) - its not a strong enough plot point.

Kim Bum was a complete waste of talent.

In the end I found myself not giving two hoots how this ended and skipped thru the last 4 episodes. ugh.

Annoying, Frustrating, Boring.

You can disagree all you want but this drama felt so terrible to me that it almost caused me a drama block!! It had a very promising start but especially after episode 6,,everything became so messy and more than boring..🤧
Watching the past trauma over and over again just frustrated me....It felt like the story had completely frozen 😑

Comedy scenes didnt make me laugh even once and there wasnt a single character I could truly relate to!!! Most characters were annoying..
I had been forcing myself saying "keep watching keep watching, it will get better..It has to be good! Its kim bum's drama..Its Ahn Hyo seop's drama..😮‍💨 I was literally watching it at 2x speed and still struggling to get through it..

Me most disappointed in Ahn Hyo Seop.. His makeup, body language, expressions..nothing matched his usual standard...

And Kim Bum!!!
He barely had any screentime or depth in his role... Why did he even choose a role like this? He deserves so much more than this...

So why did I still continue watching?
— Kim Bum and Ahn Hyo-seop.

This drama deserves this poor rating.

don’t waste your time

I love small town dramas with a lovely village, but unfortunately this drama was unwatchable even with all the good elements.

I really don’t know why kdramas have unwatchable FL characters. She was super annoying. I couldn’t understand why she was so obsessed with her mom whom left her, but ignored her dad who was always there for her. She was so unnecessary mean to him.. OH AND THE PARENTS ENDED UP TOGETHER?? biggest bullshit ever wtf😭

Their was also ZERO chemistry with the FL en ML. I wanted to skip all their scenes, they just didn’t click at all.. never had this problem so badly.

The story of the ML, the story of the little girl, the story of the SML.. you know what, every scene that didn’t include the FL was really fun to watch. I loved the town and the cute scenes.

The ending tho.. the weird ass unnecessary plot twist ruined it even more.. What was the writer on while writing this? The cliches were so bad too the whole phone call shit was so corny 😭😭

I needed so much strength to even finish this drama.. I had so much expectations, cause I really do like the trope, but I was really disappointed.

Dramas this year have great tropes only for ruining it somehow???? I would skip this and watch other great summer dramas. I forced myself to endure this shit ass show to write a review for you guys..

Major Letdown

The first two episodes were gold! The introduction of the characters perfection, the village felt comforting and so beautiful that I a person who doesn't like the countryside would like to go there and hang out with the adorable grannies, and so funny I cried laughing (Mechoori is comedy gold that will never not be funny to me).

When it started so good, so funny so wholesome, Why?! What happened for it to become such nothing, just plain nothing. What a waste of talent, oh my god! They got Kim Bum and wasted him, Eric does absolutely nothing in the whole drama, just smile and look cute, not even the slightest chance of winning over Dam Ye Jin it makes no sense for Mechoori to be so jealous of Eric, the man is like a puppy all cuteness and no danger.

I am well aware that these dramas follow their own logic and trying to apply real life logistics is impossible, like wearing a crisp white two piece skirt set and high heels to visit the countryside is perfectly logical in Drama land you just have to accept it and go with it, but this drama made it so hard for me, wow! so dumb!! How is it possible that Dam Ye Jin an employee in a big company does everything from promoting and selling the products to research to customer service to repairs, I wouldn't be surprised if she also cleaned the bathrooms and drove the garbage truck, she probably did but it was edited out, just nonsense and then there's the fact that mechoori drove from his house in the countryside to the city in what? 20 minutes maybe, when Dam Ye Jin called him and then the next episode it is shown that the GPS calculated 2hrs from a halfway point in the middle of the night!! Make it make sense please!!

I'm ranting, I'm fuming, I am so upset! I was sure this was going to be a good one!!🥲 It's not entierly bad, there are some funny jokes and cute moments but it is not worth the 12 hours I wasted watching it. At least I was able to finish it so I'll be a little generous with my rating.

Flat Jokes, Basic Story

The drama didn’t really work for me as a rom-com. The comedy didn’t land and most of the jokes felt flat or kind of pointless. The story also felt pretty predictable and basic, without anything new or interesting to really pull me in, so it got boring at times. I also felt the lead actress still needs more improvement in her acting to fully take on a leading role.

Who needs Tinder when you can join the OTP's friend circle

As an idol romance drama, it ticked many boxes. Our leads are eye candies, and they have good chemistry so their pairing can’t be faulted.

Credit where credit is due, the core theme is solid and made a nice through line. The sleepwalking is a little forced, but effective as a plot device. The late-night calling of the ML's phone by the FL is clever the first couple of times, but it becomes repetitive. The little twist with the call recordings saved us a lot of angst.

The rest of the drama is patchy. This is not helped by a large support cast that are mostly from central casting. The sad fact is the veteran actors did their best. Unfortunately, their characters have little presence and even less to do. There are also some production related issues such as integration of location shots.

Thus, it falls on the shoulders of not one, but 2 secondary couples to chew up some screen time. These two CPs' romances are stilted to say the least. BTW, there is a last minute 4CP. You guessed it, they are also in our leads' friend circle.

Let's start with the 2CP. We have a mushroom farm worker being paired with the FL's long suffering PD. The 2ML is the polar opposite to the ML and is socially awkward. They fell in love at first sight. Really?

The 3CP is even more tenuous. The 3ML is our male lead’s business partner and the 3FL is the village cafe owner. Their pairing is rather random and they have zero chemistry. We watch their awkward courtship with more apprehension than delight. Behold! The magical power of the friend circle!

If the secondary pairings are less than ideal, the meet-cute between the SML and the FL is next level. The script would have us believe the FL ran under a total stranger's umbrella during a sudden rain shower. Rather than mumbling a joesonghabnida and move on, she kept him company for some time, walking around aimlessly in the rain and chatting freely. They ended up having coffee together and she even agreed to a meal the next day. No wonder the SML developed feelings.

This appears to be out of character and made the FL look desperate. I'm glad they eventually parted ways as friends. I'm just thankful we didn't end up with a psycho SML as per the playbook.

We mustn't forget the relationship between the FL and her estranged mother. This is a can of worms. The original reasoning behind the alienation is old school but plausible. The longer the story runs, the more convoluted it becomes. No wonder the FL has mommy issues. Of course, that relationship also has an redemption arc. It is that type of drama after all.

If the show has been more focused on our lead's romance and growth, I'd have given it an 8.5. With all the missteps I can only give it a 7.5

In the end, the show was a hit and a miss for me. I freely acknowledge the series has good bones. I swooned when the OTP is firing. They are a cute couple. I just wish the series as a whole is done better.

As expected, it all ends well. Rainbow and sunshine blessed the land. The last couple of eps used up all the pink ribbon supply and should come with a diabetic warning. A one-time watch for me. Peace.

The couple carried the whole drama

What stood out to me the most was definitely the chemistry between the leads and the way their relationship developed. Their bond felt genuinely emotional and layered because they both carry similar baggage: unresolved pain, perfectionist tendencies, and a habit of burying themselves in work. It made their relationship feel real rather than idealized. I also really liked that the ML admires the FL's ambition instead of constantly treating it as a flaw that needs to be fixed. The FL was actually one of the most relatable characters in the drama for me, which is why I've never really understood the amount of hate she gets.

I also thought the drama did a great job balancing humor with its more serious tone. The overall story is fairly predictable, but the execution is what makes it work. The countryside setting gives everything a warm and nostalgic vibe, and the little bits of humor, references, and occasional fourth-wall breaks keep the familiar romcom tropes feeling fresh. At the same time, the drama touches on heavier topics like burnout, emotional repression, and losing yourself in work and responsibilities.

The directing was beautiful at times. The pacing is another strength for me since there are very few dull moments and the story flows naturally for most of its run, even if the last three episodes start to slow down.

That said, it's definitely not without flaws. I was hoping for a more satisfying resolution to the case because by the end it felt rushed, underdeveloped, and sometimes even a bit ridiculous. Honestly, the final episode in particular was pretty disastrous, and it ended up being the weakest episode of the whole drama for me, which was really disappointing given how strong the rest of the story had been up to that point.

I also wish we had gotten more time with the main couple simply being together instead of constantly teasing new conflicts through the previews. Honestly, the previews made the viewing experience way more stressful than it needed to be, so I'd actually recommend avoiding them at all cost. I also would've liked a better balance between the romance and the business/work-related plotlines, especially in the final stretch.

Another thing that didn't really work for me was the love triangle (yes, Eric...). Thankfully it's pretty minor, but I still don't think it added much. More generally, I wasn't a huge fan of how some of the side plots were handled. Eric and his storyline with his sister never felt fully developed, and in the end they contributed very little to the overall story. He ended up feeling more like an extra supporting character than someone who was actually important to the narrative.

Despite those issues, this drama ended up being much more meaningful and emotionally layered than I expected from a slice-of-life romcom. While there are definitely things I think could've been handled better, the strong character dynamics, emotional impact, and solid execution made it a genuinely enjoyable and worthwhile watch for me.

Give this drama a try

No proper promotions. Just a teaser trailer and few people are waiting. In this season of good k-dramas airing, I chose this. I'm happy that I did because it doesn't feel heavy when I'm tuning in every week. I don't get why people are dropping this, it was pretty obvious that this is a healing and wholesome drama ,they expect shocking plots. I could not relate because goodness I am enjoying this. I was abit scared for episode 12 since its always rushed but thank God it wasn't. It was enough to close all plots. In a few years, people would recommend this drama and call it criminally underrated.
