Chan Chen Pang, better known as the "12th Young Master", was a fashionable playboy who frequented the opium dens prevalent in Hong Kong in 1934, where he met the high-class and much sought-after courtesan Fleur. They began a passionate love affair, something frowned upon by the family of 12th Master, who held sway over the business of the area. Clearly, their love was doomed when it was found out. Seeing no way to pursue their love in life, on March 8 at 11 pm, the couple resolved to commit suicide together by swallowing opium and promise to meet again in the afterlife. After waiting for Chan in hell for 50 years, Fleur returns to the world of the living to look for him, wondering why he has not emerged. A spirit now, she searches for her lover in a Hong Kong she no longer recognizes... (Source: Amazon) ~~ Adapted from the novel "Rouge" (胭脂扣) by Lilian Lee (李碧華). Edit Translation

The film begins in Hong Kong 1934, Courtesan Fleur (Anita Mui) enters into a relationship with a pharmacist Chen-pang (Leslie Cheung). Their love story turns into a tragedy when Chen-pang’s wealthy family refuses their relationship. Later on, In 1987 Fleur appears to an Hong Kong newspaper officer, searching for the lover that abandoned her in a suicide pact more than five decades ago.

Rouge is directed by Stanley Kwan, The story is very simple and yet so brilliant. No words can describe, the fact that both Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui are not alive today, it hurts so much. The shift of the movie from the past to present to the past to present is a masterpiece. Loved this movie.

This movie was offered as an in flight movie, I decided to watch, it kept me occupied during the flight.

Protagonist Fleur is a singer & courtesan in a flower house in Hong Kong, she meets & falls in love with 12th master.

He's a heir of pharmacy chains, and this relationship is doomed from the beginning...

When 12th master offers her a suicide pact & Fleur accepts it.

Than we have a time jump around 50-60 years in late 80's of Hong Kong.

Fleur appears on news paper office where Yuen works and tells him that she wants to place an ad to find Chan, who never arrived in the afterlife, she uses a code that indicated time and date, year of her suicide.

Yuen feels sorry for her gives her some money, but she follows her to Yuen's house, Yuen's girl friend first get suspicious thinking that he's cheating on her, but soon understands that she's a ghost.

Yuen's girl friend helps her Fleur to prepare for her meeting with 12th master, but when Fleur learns that 12th master never committed suicide, she felt cheated..

Fleur also helped Yuen & his girl friend, they started to see things from different view of perspective.

I've tried to review it as much as I remember from the movie, it's been a couple of weeks.
