This past week, a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal, causing over 7,000 reported deaths [as of May 4th] and an unspeakable amount of property damage and destruction. In response, several South Korean celebrities [as well as celebrities from other countries] have showed their generosity. This has blossomed hope in my heart, that there are still good people on this earth, people who still care for each other.
Lee Min Ho, the actor that stole our hearts in "Boys over Flowers" and "City Hunter", donated approximatively $92,000 to UNICEF. He hopes the money will help the Nepalese people recover from the horrible earthquake.
IU, the talented singer and actress who will be soon be starring in the upcoming drama "Producer", donated $92,000 to Green Umbrella Children's Foundation. She made her donation on May 5th, which incidentally was Children's Day [a holiday which celebrates the blessing of Children].
She stated: "I heard about some children who can't go anywhere with their parents or get presents. I wanted to do something for them."
Song Il Gook, the actor that impressed us in dramas like " The Kingdom Of The Winds" and " Fermentation Family", also donated $92,000 to Green Umbrella Children's Foundation. He said, "I feel for those poor children. I am a father too. I decided to do a good deed for those suffering from the after-effects of the Nepal earthquake, as well as sick children in Korea".
Park Shin Hye, the actress that charmed us in Korean dramas like "Pinocchio" and "You're Beautiful", is no stranger to charity - She's been the promotional ambassador for Hunger Saver for several years now. One of the representatives of the organisation claimed that the actress donated 30,000,000 won (approx. $28,000 U.S.) on April 27 to the area affected by the Nepal earthquake.
Girl's Day, a Kpop band known for their hit songs 'Something', 'Darling'. and 'Twinkle Twinkle', chose to show their generosity by donating a sum to the people affected by the earthquake. According to the Korean National Red Cross, Gir's Day donated around $9,000 U.S to their organization.
Girl's Days stated, "In order to give to the citizens of Nepal, who lost their family and friends to a sudden and strong earthquake, strength so that they could stand again, the members decided on our own to donate. It's a small amount, but we hope that they'll be able to return as soon as possible to the way they were before the earthquake."
Kim Yuna, the well known Korean figure skater, has donated $100,000 through UNICEF Korean National Commission. She hopes the money will be used to supply the children of Nepal with the resources they need to lead a good life.
Kim Dong Wan, one of the members of the Kpop group Shinhwa as well as a talented actor seen in dramas like " Cheer Up, Mr. Kim!" and "The Peak", was incredibly shaken when he heard about the tragedy that struck Nepal. . According to the Hunger Saver's organization, Dong Wan contacted them and promptly donated $33,660.
If you haven't donated yet and would like to, Save The Children and Red Cross are two seemingly reputable organizations that are hard at work in Nepal.
