On the 12th, YG Entertainment announced that Cha Seung Won would star in the Netflix film War and Revolt, produced and scripted by Park Chan Wook and directed by Kim Sang Man.
War and Revolt depicts the turbulent era of the Japanese invasion of Korea, telling the story of Jong Ryeo (played by Park Jung Min), the son of the most prestigious military family in Joseon, and his loyal servant Cheon Young (played by Kang Dong Won), who become enemies as they serve as military officials and rebels under King Seonjo (played by Cha Seung Won).
Cha Seung Won will portray King Seonjo, who abandons the nation and its people during the Japanese invasion and focuses solely on rebuilding the king's authority after the war. He is expected to express the dark side of a monarch amidst the chaotic times through his unique acting. This marks Cha Seung Won's return to the historical genre after approximately eight years since The Map Against the World.
The film will be directed by Kim Sang Man, who previously worked on the movie Midnight FM, and produced by Moho Film and Semicolon Studio, known for their works such as Decision to Leave, The Handmaiden, and Snowpiercer. Notably, director Park Chan Wook participated in the production and co-wrote the screenplay with writer Shin Chul.
Before War and Revolt, Cha Seung Won is set to meet fans through the films Believer 2 and Tyrant.
