Cluedo or Clue is a murder/mystery board game that was designed by Anthony E. Pratt in 1944, and is published by Hasbro. Cluedo simulates an English Tudor Mansion with its corridors, rooms, and secret passages. The objective of the game is to discover who amongst the six suspects living in the house has murdered the board game’s victim  as well as the weapon used to commit the crime, and the place it occurred.

Thai drama Khun Mae Suam Roy also deals with the discovery of a murder and a sequence of unexplained accidents amongst the Sutarak family living in a Thai manor house. Pretending to be her wheelchair-bound twin sister Siriya, a woman called Sina enters the Sutharak’s mansion to discover whom which of the house's inhabitants shot her sister.

Caution: Minor spoilers ahead!

Both in the English country house and at the Sutharak’s mansion, there are six suspects:

In the board game, those are:

  • Mrs. White
  • Mr. Green
  • Mrs. Peacock
  • Colonel Mustard
  • Miss Scarlet
  • Professor Plum

At the Sutharak’s house, those are:
  • Pawinee Sutharak (the family matriarch)
  • Nattaya Sutharak (the daughter-in-law)
  • Paradee Sutharak (the daughter)
  • Athirat Sutharak (the “stepson”, Pawinee’s husband's son with his mistress, but whom she brought up as her own)
  • Darika (Nattaya’s sister)

There are 324 possibilities to solve the crime in Cluedo. In Khun Mae Suam Roy, however, the murder location and weapon are known.

This might lead to the assumption that discovering the person responsible for the crime and the details of the murder is easy, but sometimes knowing too much can be worse than knowing too little.

In Cluedo, when a player suggests something pertaining the murderer, the other players have to demonstrate otherwise and proving the player wrong. In Khun Mae Suam Roy, Sina, with the help of Khun Krit (the Sutharak’s lawyer whose father was killed in an accident that also killed Khun Pop, Nattaya’s husband) and Nuan, must discover who caused the accidents and prove or disprove each of their theories.

At the Sutharak’s mansion, every family member is guilty until proven otherwise and even then, just because one person has been proven not to be guilty, that doesn’t mean that the person was not guilty at all. And just because one person is shown to be guilty, it doesn't mean they actually are.

Like Cluedo, Khun Mae Suam Roy is a guessing game:

  • Who shot Siriya?
  • Who killed Khun Pop and Khun Jen?
  • Who messed with Krit’s car's breaks and caused him and Sina (as Siriya) to have an accident and end up in the hospital?
  • Who tried to have Kaosuay, Siriya’s son, drown in a swimming pool?
  • Who tried to shoot Sina (as Siriya)?

These are some of the questions Sina and her friends try to answer but every time they think they’re close, they seem to get farther away from the truth.

No one at the Sutharak’s mansion likes Siriya (as in Sina, pretending to be her twin), and everyone has a reason to not want her there:

Pawinee tolerates her due to her son Pop’s will but can’t stand  her for being his mistress when he had a wife whom he ignored to spend  more time with Siriya and their son.
Nattaya (Khun Nat) looks at Siriya with her son, her husband’s son, and  is jealous of her as she herself was unable to have children and was  unloved by her husband, who loved Siriya.
Paradee was jealous of her brother Pop and wanted her mother to choose  her to be the president of their company. She dislikes Siriya merely because she considers her a threat, not because she actually has something against her. Also, Paradee has no qualms about playing Siriya against her family or about hurting her if it suits her purposes.
Darika hates Siriya simply because she sees her as competition to Khun Thi’s heart and she’ll have none of it. Siriya lives in the same house as Athirat on the Sutharak’s estate grounds, and Darika doesn’t like it. She loves Khun Thi and will stop at nothing to hurt Siriya for his love.
Khun Thi was forced to marry his brother's wife as per his will instructions, forced to live with her and his nephew in his house. Khun Thi was not happy.

Which of the suspects do you think is responsible for the accidents?

What do you think are their motives?
