Dainora Petrauskaite:In novel Tian is more pessimistic, sarcastic, while Phupha is more strict and rarely shows his emotions, even less than in a series (excuse me, I think in the series Chief was pretty open about his feelings lol)
I've read this about the novel, before. If that is the case, I'm glad with the adaptations they made.

Yeah. Director Aof actually made the story better I think. In series I actually saw process of Phupha and Tian loving each other. It was harder in a novel. Watching series first helped me visualise characters and feel in love with them. Reading novel helped me deeper the characters and understand them better, but I would not love it if I wouldn't have seen Aof's version. I think he directed and wrote scrip perfectly, he added and took of what was needed and I love it
In general, this provides a lot more context and detail than the series. Teerayut's sympathetic reaction to Tian's note is important in understanding why he reached out (eventually to Phu) to keep an eye on Tian. His motivations were not control of his son, they were ensuring his son had space to find himself, with a "guardian angel" watching over.
Of course, the director and screenwriters had a limited amount of air time in which to tell the story, so I guess it's inevitable that some details were left out. But I think the above example is quite significant and it would have been better to leave it in.
Thanks again to solipsism5 (is there a 1,2,3,and 4 somewhere? :-) )
Hi Everyone! Here's the next installment:
Chapter 7
Phupha arrives in the morning at Tian's hut. He is upset that Tian left the gas lamp running all night and calms himself down reciting a "sutra" (a concise proverb found in Buddhism, and Hinduism). He orders Tian gruffly to get up and take a bath. He leads Tian to the village which is just a few dozen meters from his hut. Tian is led to the largest house in the village and is soon greeted by Khama, the village chief. Khama asks how he slept the previous night and Tian complains about being bitten by mosquitos. Phupha tells him he didn't put up the netting correctly. Tian's irritated at this asking why Phupha hadn't shown him how to do it. Phupha doesn't apologize but tells him he'll help him that night with it.
Phupha leads Tian to a place where he can bathe. It's the waterfall we're familiar with in the series. Tian is amazed at how crystal clear the water is - you can see the leaves piled up at the bottom of the stream. Tian asks if he can't take a bath near his hut, but Phupha tells him he would have to take a bucket from this stream to do that. Phupha also tells him that the military people actually have underground wells and electric generators so they didn't have that problem. Tian is very irritated hearing this.
Tian is given some disgusting looking soap and brown shampoo which he thinks must be made of dung but turns out to be made of some natural ingredients from an ancient recipe. He finds he actually quite likes it. Tian unfortunately swims toward the waterfall where there is an underground vortex. Phupha had tried to warn him to stay away from that area and now searches for him frantically. He finds him face down at the bottom of the waterfall. Tian soon comes to and it's apparent he's only been pretending. Phupha angrily takes the nearly naked Tian onto his shoulders. Tian tries to hit him on the chest. After a little while he drop Tian on the ground. Tian looks at him with a vicious expression until he notices a scar across Phupha's chest. Later on he keeps snatching glances at Phupha thinking how attractive he is as they are walking back.
After a while they reach the village. According to local customs he's not supposed to enter the village gate until the villagers come out to give him permission. He broke this rule the previous night but the people in this particular village are little bit flexible. He is met by Khama who wonders why Phupha has taken him to the waterfall where the villagers wash their clothes instead of letting him use the water they had provided him in his hut. He also wonders why Phupha personally takes care of him.
Tian stays in his hut until evening when Yod comes to pick him up. The village is preparing a traditional reception for him which will allow him to enter the village. Yod goes with him for some distance but tells him he has to go the last half kilometer by himself. Tian walks up to the elaborate village gate and starts to get frightened waiting in the cold dark night. Suddenly a bunch of torches are lit and some villagers in Indigo suits with three colored threads greet him and take him in. He is led to the village courtyard where "Mima" the religious head of the village is performing a ritual, twirling a cane around his head. At one point it seems Mima is about to hit him on the head with the cane and Tian tries to defend himself. Khama hits him gently on the back and tells him to relax. Mima uses the cane to put some red ash on Tian's forehead which is used to ward off evil forest spirits. Later the most important people village come to tie some sacred threads to Tian's wrists. Phupha has to do it as well which Tian resents. While Phupha is doing this the army doctor Nam suddenly appears and makes fun of Phupha for tieing a red thread on Tian which represents a marriage tie, I believe. Tian takes an instant liking to Nam. At the end of the ceremony the villagers prepare a meal for Tian.
End of Chapter 7
Hi again, everyone. Here's chapter 8:
As they prepare for dinner Yod tells Tian that Phupha has helped the villagers to read and write Thai so they would not be fooled by the people in the city. Yod says the school for the children was started 4 years ago. Many times Phupha wanted to disband the school because children that were taught there would never come back to the village. Nonetheless, he hated to see the kids go without an education. Tian starts eating the prepared meal which is very spicy for him, but he eats till he's stuffed. The guests try to give him some beer but he says he's allergic to it. Dr. Nam gets very drunk and Phupha has to carry him back. Tian leaves the party at 9pm and when he gets back to his hut he's surprised to see it lit up. Phupha is inside and teaches him how to use the gas lamp. Tian asks why he is there and Phupha replies that he had promised to be there that night. Tian asks Phupha how to put up the mosquito net and then asks him to demonstrate how to do it. After Phupha finishes Tian say he's going to take a bath in the backyard, indicating he knew how Phupha tricked him earlier in the day. Phupha also realizes that Tian tricked him into setting up the mosquito net and gets very angry.
Next morning Khama meets Tian to take him to school. Tian was still recovering from the cold night and didn't want to take a bath with cold water. Khama tells him that he can heat the water with a cooker he has in his dormitory. Khama says that Phupha could show him how to use it. Tian shivers at the idea and asks Khama if he can show him instead but Khama refuses. They start the trek to the school which is a kilometer away up a high hill. The school is attended by kids from the neighboring villages as well. Khama after hearing the Thai national anthem played in the morning says he is grateful to the Thai people for providing a home to the Akha people who would be homeless people, a nation of wanderers, forever stateless and unprotected.
Tian is told there are many students but he only sees fifteen that day. Khama tells a perplexed Tian that many students have to help their parents in the fields. Tian also says he only speaks Thai and worries the students won't understand him. Khama reassures him they understand enough Thai and some are even fluent. He points to a 15 year old, Ayi, in the back that is the best Thai speaker. After introducing himself, a student asks if his name means crayon [the Thai word for Tian means just that], but he says it actually means wise man. He asks students where they left off with the last teacher but since the students are all of different ages they all had different assignments. Tian says he needs each of them to find out where they left off with the last teacher. In the meanwhile he asks all of them to draw a picture of their families for today's assignment. The first two students to turn in their work are Ayi and his sister Mizu who both drew pictures of Phupha and Torfun for their father (ada) and mother (ania). Tian is surprised to see a soldier stationed at the school. The soldier tells him on the borderlands nowhere is safe. Returning home he is soon greeted by Phupha who calls him Teacher Crayon. Tian realizes that Phupha has the soldier at the school spying on him. Phupha says if he doesn't get some lesson plans together he will be deported. At this point Tian does start to reflect on how hasty his decision was to come here - the city had become monotonous but this place was tortuous. Phupha later sees that Tian has gathered up some of the children's workbooks and is making a real effort at his job. He softens up and tells Tian he can be their teacher after all. Tian feeling down on himself says he doesn't deserve to be called teacher. Phupha says then don't be their teacher, be their brother. He also tells Tian that a lot of the children are not there to learn anything but to hear about the outside world and learn from outside experiences from the volunteer teachers. Tian feels much better and takes Phupha up on an offer to go to the town market.
