At the beginning of ep. 3 we have Jinghe drunk painting a picture of a woman, back towards us, reaching towards a branch with blossoms. She has a dress with blue patterns and a white shawl. Someone grabs his hand and he responds, "Beauty" tries to kiss the hand. I wondered who the woman in the painting was. But 'Beauty' would indicate that it was Mei Lin and the kiss shows that by ep. 3, he had feelings for her, More than the gossip and our understanding of the character would indicate.

What shows that it is the same woman is the tree in the left corner (it is the same tree). In episode 3 it is as if she had already entered the courtyard. And in the painting in episode 12 she is outside the courtyard door, but you can see the tree. (So he liked her from day one, but he planned to die with her. As she told him in the bathtub, on their first date: "I am afraid of not dying with you."

"Like, what was even the point?"
Well, I think that, what the writers wanted to say is :

1) About the impact of parenting on the children's life and choices.
MRJH went from the morbid personnality of the "ghost general" to someone who fought to stay alive ( he was poisoned as well as Mei Lin) and tried to cure his loved one from a lethal threat, from the moment he found the hidden message from the Empress De Jia on her embroided screen. There, he knew that his mother always loved him and trusted him, as the well educated and kind boy she raised.
In this very moment, "The Master of Shadow Works" desapeared as his resentment vanished.
All he had to do left was continue his quest to overturn the Qinzhou case and redeem the reputation of the "Weibei Army" to convince his father of his innocence by forcing him to re-open the case.
His mother's postum message cuddled his heart and he was able to open up his heart to love Mei Lin.

On the contrary Crown Prince Murong Xuan Lie, lost his mother since his birth. Thus the crooked personality he developed despite being raised by the same parent as Prince Jing.

The importance of the parental education is a golden nugget of the show.

2) All misdeed cannont be redeemed, because yes, life is unfair .
Yes, it is unfair that the Momai poison he chose was indeed lethal.
He did his best to neutralize it but once done some actions have consequences, like in real life.
Same as the Crown Prince Murong Xuan Lie's demise. In real life, people with higher mobility are not treated the same way the commoners are.
This criminal against humanity's death was unfair, yes.
And like you said the list of unfair moments goes on.

3) People can change for the better.
I appreciated watching the leads coming from a world where the were seeking death, to their fight for survivals. While making justice and saving each other every time.
Those dark individuals could find balance in the end and even have a happy ending in their next life.

This is why I like this drama despite its flaws. There is a morals side to "Kill me Love me"

I think Jing He had a flashback later in the drama when he and Mei Lan looked young and happy in love. It must have been ten years prior. Was I imagining the timeline?

It's not a conventional flashback. It's a modified time travel (it's a rewrite of their lives in the afterlife). The writers gave the consolation in this scene that is earlier, to conclude the last scene of the drama (with the sad ending), but showing us that there is something happy (next).

Liu Xueyi's Murong Jinghe, with a tear in his eyes, is unwilling, wronged, and even more unbelievable.
He finally made a name for his companion Zhaoxue, finally made a name for himself, and finally looked forward to the ending with Meilin.
He was just one step away from happiness.
Mei Lin finally said to him
, "Live well and live a long life,"
and she sat beside him. Murong Jinghe could hear her breathing weakening, and he could also feel her life slowly passing, and he was helpless.
She is like a camellia on the branches, bright and wanton when it opens. When it was time to fall, he was shocked to find that the whole flower fell into the mud, irretrievable, only sighing.
They have gone through the most difficult moments together, and they have also seen each other's embarrassed appearances.
How can he be relieved?
Every time Liu Xueyi cries, it hurts people's hearts together.
Murong Jing and this life are too bitter. The loved ones leave one by one, and the people who care about them are finally separated. Guilt, unwillingness, regret, and loss are intertwined in the heart, turning into an irreparable scar.
The young emperor was only thirty-eight years old, and he died depressed and went with his lover.
Liu Xueyi is too good at crying. I followed Murong Jing and sad ?

The writers know wuxia / xianxia fans like sad endings so they provided one for them.
But the true ending is a happy ending when they survive. Why do I say that?
Because, the symbol representing them is the "undying flower". They spoke about next life all along during the drama.
It was to announce the survival and the new encounter in the next life.

Taking in account all those elements. I could not call this ending messy on because everything was announced before with clues.

Excerpt from my review on that subject :

https://mydramalist.com/profile/unbeliebubble/reviews/400704

- The forshadowing of the happy ending during the all show :
I believe in an happy ending. The undying flower is a very important element of the plot. It is showcased in the opening credit several times. More than a symbol of resilience and strength. The leads talk about their next life all the time. More than that, MRJH and ML almost died several times during the show. This was done to prepare the viewers to see their next life via reincarnation. Now that we know that. It is not difficult to see that the last scenes of the drama, tell the viewers that they were reborn and meet again in a different time and space.

I wish they had managed to express two concepts of the immortal flower. The happy concept through life after death (they did). But the other concept of the immortal flower is related to this phrase repeated during the show: "This can't kill me". The flowers that bloom in the inhospitable place like a stone floor, is also related to all the times they survived near death. (This was incomplete). They didn't die before, but they didn't live all the years they should have (in this life) and they didn't see the flowers bloom together (like at the end of the book). In my opinion, they should have survived, found the antiduct for both of them (because he was also poisoned = and the drama didn't explain this properly). After this happy ending (from the book), happening in the drama. Then they could have put another happy ending (in the afterlife). That's my complaint. Immortality (in this life), and immortality (afterlife).

Yes, indeed. They let the audience choose what ending they liked the most.
And the audience had to interprete the ending.
It was not easy to recognize at first glance.
    You are right.
There are 2 concepts regarding the undying flower and they fell to emphazise that.
I will have to rewatch the episode 28 to see if MRJH tell to Mei Lin's fake corpse : "I didn't know this could kill you".
Pretty much like in the book.

      Indeed. (Two concepts....)?
And....?➡️ (Every sentence in this drama is essential. Okay, watch this sentence. It's very interesting that you discovered this sentence in the drama. It's in the book (it's very significant to Jing He's personality and how he sees Mei Lin, her tenacity and strength).

I actually enjoy dramas genre and I'm not allergic to unhappy endings as long as they are reasonable, but I feel like the drama in this series is a bit forced. For about 10 episodes, all you watch is regret and hopelessness, which makes you feel helpless. It's like they decided to write an ending where no one is happy. Yes, life is made up of choices, and these choices can affect many people's lives, but here we are watching the trauma and regret caused in others by someone else's mistake (the crown prince burning down the city). Watching the lead character reach the end of their life, imagining how things might have been if someone else’s mistake hadn’t happened, really makes you feel powerless and hopeless.

In fact, the drama wants to show that they met later in another life, beyond death, (in a rewritten life where these mistakes would not have occurred). PS>: But I think it was a mistake not to have the ending of the book, in which both are cured of the poison and spend the rest of their lives together as emperor and empress. (because the drama gave us right from the beginning a man who paid for his mistakes, who kept saying: for all my life I will repay her. (the drama seemed to say he will pay everything with his love for her for the rest of their lives (together for many, many years). And at all times: both said this you can't kill me. They are two people who gave up looking for death, to look for survival. Twice in the drama they fell off a cliff and survived (and other moments of near death). This is unreasonable with the analogy of the immortal flower that symbolizes both Mei Lin and Jing He. (The drama promised something in the previews) and in the drama it changed the audience's expectations (to again, in the end break the new expectation). So, in a way (the plot failed twice). This drama could be much more successful if the plot were more cohesive, it wouldn't have so many anticlimaxes. (But still there are many good things in the drama: They stopped being agents of revenge, to agents of peace, and the common good. They started to help each other. They got married, they spent their last moments together. (In the end they are two people who chose the light, and gave up the darkness). And there are moments of humor, romance, adventure, duel, etc.

Liu Xueyi is so suitable for the kind of gloomy and smiling tiger role, cheek meat + deep dimples + petals and thin lips capitalize innocent evil, bow your head and smile crookedly with a dutch angle is simply tyrannical aesthetics.
The facial features are sharp and sharp, and there is a sense of solemnity, but whenever the meaning is doubled, the face sinks a little, and I am scared off-screen to freeze. With 183 wide shoulders and long legs, anthracene, the feeling of oppression is really not a casual talk.
It is recommended to hurry up to a  power scheme, both good and evil, the official of the court, the maker of the rules of the game, the bottom of the hand is never clean, but the mood will be sunny for a second. When he was in prison and tried the case, he lit a fire and candle, and his face was just half bright and half dark. The nasal bone is too superior, as if it separates people in two, the fine lines between the neck are the distant wind and cranes, and the white space under the eyes is the white bone seat that has been stepped on. When he walked, he followed too many wordless stories, including the neighing of war horses and the palace jade liquid. When I meet this kind of person, even if my hand is up and down, I will find thousands of reasons for him.

Don't the Momai warriors belong to the shadow army?
No, Mei Lin was trained by "The Shadow works Faction" for the planned revenge. However, to frame war Minister Zhang YIn and the momai army. Prince Jing poisoned Mei Lin with Momai poison. So as to mimic the way Momai warriors operate. So that, when Mei Lin would die assassinating Prince Jing at the royal banquet. War Minister Zhang Yin would be suspected. This is why Mei Lin thought that Zhang Yin was the Master of Shadow Works.

The best meaning we saw throughout the episodes of the drama was that the time would come when they would find the cure. They would live for many years. (That was the best ending). But... (Being reborn in the other life really eased my frustration). And the fact that they chose the light (in this life) despite the consequences and left the path of self-destruction and living for revenge (they had the same heart even in that). So... the drama is beautiful and worth watching... but I can't deny my frustration at some points.

You summed it up very well. They take a path of light instead of a dark path. It is full of hope but yes with some frustrations because him poisoning her had consequences. But it is still beautiful. He should have never let her go with Yin Que. He was too sellfish. He doomed her.

Hide SpoilerI wish the writers could write a "survival" story until the end. But writing these disagreements (without a solution) didn't make me happy. Seeing them fly twice as they threw themselves off the cliff and survived. Fight in the forest with your martial arts and survive. Staying in an inhospitable place for a while and surviving. The male lead went through humiliation due to the snake bite and survived. For, then, the anti-climax contrary to the meaning of the immortal flower (which is explained in the drama, it survives in the most inhospitable places and is found everywhere). And yet the many times they say (it can't kill me), and then the fateful anti-climax die so quickly in the end (as if everything that happened before was useless) for their "survival". This broke the chain, the link of meaning that came from the beginning. Redeem the hero. But the redeemed hero deserves the ending he deserves. Suffering until the end is as if you still had to pay what had already been paid with your loyalty and love. (So....why wouldn't life be meaningful in the end), why does death need to be more meaningful and touching? (Life cannot be meaningful)?, I mean in the sense of plot for a story. Isn't it also touching to stay alive for many years and pay for every day with your love, even if it has already been paid for before.

Hide SpoilerBut at least "Snowy night, timeless love" is a story with a sad ending in the book too. So much so that the main symbol is snow (I'm watching this drama, but I haven't finished it yet). While in Kill me love me, the symbol is the immortal flower, (they could live for many, many years and die old), which is something we don't like to see (the symbol of our mortality), so then comes the rebirth in the afterlife (as if to say: we really are immortal flowers).

Jinghe has lived for more than 30 years, ten years of lying on his salary and tasting courage through the darkest moments, ten years of loneliness and loneliness on the road of the emperor, bidding farewell to all his loved ones, and tasting the suffering of the world. It's not that he hasn't experienced warmth, but the light he once grabbed also returned him to the sun at sunset. Time is the cruelest of all, if you have never had it, this endless loneliness is a habit. There are still snow dragon whiskers in the world, but the people who need snow dragon whiskers are long gone, and every winter in the future, this gray world will only hang on the branches of bright red fruits, and the pavilions are like covers.
If there is a parallel time and space, I hope that Jinghe is still the high-spirited general of Weibei, leading the soldiers to gallop on the battlefield and fight for the country. I hope that the world will be peaceful, the people will be happy, and the people will last for a long time, and I hope to meet the deceased again, and smile like a flower. #Spring Flower Flame ends today##Spring Flower Flame#

#Spring Flower Flame#

The story of Spring Flower Flame is coming to an end, and I say goodbye to Meilin-

Meilin She is sharp and stubborn, so ten years ago, the "little beggar" in Qingzhou would assassinate the "enemy" General Tu without hesitation; She is smart and sober, she is "afraid of death" as a dead soldier but knows that "she can't die", and she can also choose to hold up the peace persuasion of the two countries and "move forward"; She is kind and sensitive, she has received all the kindness from her side, and at the same time has the energy to give back more; She is free and easy, she is pious to the love she recognizes, and she persistently guards the light behind her, and she will choose to let go after the grievances are tossed and turned, and change her name and surname to live for herself. Everyone said that she was like a "can't die" flower blooming on the ruins, and it was also a fireworks blooming in the night.
Some time ago, the media teacher asked me, if I am reborn or in a parallel time and space, will Meilin make up for the regrets of this life? I think she won't feel sorry for Meilin, she hated it to the extreme, loved it to the extreme, worked hard to the extreme, she was loyal to her heart and was free, just live this time and be happy!
The snow in Qingzhou is blowing one after another, and Meilin's long-cherished wish in this life has been fulfilled, and there is nothing else to ask for. Meilin, goodbye.
