Thanks for the link! 🦋💕

I was gifted sourdough starter during Covid, too. I think it was a global community sanity preserver. It was also popular when I was young. A good friend who was an avid bread baker gave me some starter and a recipe for an Amish friendship cake using it. It was like a chain letter, everyone in our small town seemed to end up with a portion from that starter and the recipe. 😆

I used to make a whole wheat loaf that used very little yeast and rose overnight. It was low maintenance-my favorite kind!

From what you have mentioned before you are super busy. It’s nice you have someone to help out and ease your burden. Cooking and laundry are the never ending chores…

Oh wow! That's super cool!! Sourdough is probably the most healthy bread you can eat - you may as well make it yourself if you are having it often enough.

I actually have a live-in only bc my parents spend a lot of time here and when they are in town, I need someone to take care of them while I am at work. Otherwise I would just get by with part-time help and eating at my club more. My last helper got bouts of depression when I left her home alone for too long - I ended up having to send her home to Manila 3-4x a year whenever I traveled.😅

“”you may as well make it yourself if you are having it often enough.”

We eat bread in spurts. We may go weeks without using much. I’ll have a slice of cinnamon swirl toast at night for something sweet but keep it in the freezer or it would go bad. We always laugh when snow is headed our way because the bread shelves and milk coolers will be nearly empty. What are people doing with all that bread and milk? 😆

Your parents are lucky to have a daughter who cares for them so well. 💖

I have a small spoonful of organic peanut butter - no added oil or sugar. Its a remarkable way to get hours of deep sleep and esp good for elderly people. It keeps my dad who has mild dementia from waking up multiple times at night ranting.

Is it the fat and protein that keeps the stomach satisfied for the night? Organic PB is the way to go.

Sleep becomes more challenging as we age for a variety of reasons. I have auto immune issues with pain attacking most of my joints. Makes everything more challenging. Even simple tasks like washing greens or fruit. Long gone are the days when I used to run. Because I’ve been forced to slow way down, it’s given me the opportunity to see the beauty all around me on the trail I use. Used to I just kept repeating Gimli’s (LOTR) mantra, “Keep breathing. That’s the key. Breathe.” Now it’s just “Keep moving.” 😆

Its a combination of things that regulate blood sugar (we skip the carb its not needed to work very well):

For my folks their helper roasts peanuts and blends it with a spoonful of honey and olive oil and a pinch of salt - a small bag goes a long way. They keep it refrigerated. For myself I just get the best organic store bought one and read the label carefully bc I don't take it every night, just 2-3x a week.

I am sorry to hear about the arthritis - my sister-in-law and I both had it decades ago - mine was mild but hers was a lot worse bc HK is incredibly humid lots of people get arthritic bone aches at a relatively young age. But we have been both fine for over a decade bc of alkaline water. We swear by it. It neutralizes the acid accumulation in the joints. But you have to drink it pretty much all day and you can't boil the water it has to be room temperature. We have installed a US based alkaline water system Vitev (https://vitev.com/) at home and I take the water with me to the office to drink. To start, you can just slice lemon and put it in your water - it has to be room temp. Lemon + room temp water is alkali but lemon + hot water is acidic, it will make you worse. Before I got the Vitev system, my helper just filled jugs of water with sliced lemon - take out the seeds bc the seeds make it bitter. Try it, you will feel a lot better in a few weeks. Esp if you are religious about drinking only that kind of water. If it works you can think about a system bc it gets to be a pain (and not cheap either) to slice so many lemons all the time.

The other thing you can do is eat a lot of anti inflammatory foods - esp tumeric. I sprinkle it on my eggs before scrambling it and you can also use it to marinate chicken/fish before grilling. There are tons of delicious recipes containing tumeric that you can incorporate in your diet.

I have had a rotator cuff injury that has put a stop to my skiing, yoga and tennis for seven months now. I hear you on slowing down. That's also why I try to limit the carbs this year. We have to take care of ourselves.

Thanks for the recs! I’ve tried the lemon water. Like you said, always kept it going. Found out the hard way with another condition that turmeric is a no go for me. I’ve tried removing most simple starchy carbs. Eaten more of a raw diet. Omitted inflammatory foods. Done a lot of research and keep coming up empty. Working with a rheumatologist now. Next week is knee surgery so it’s always a party around here! 😂🥳
