Episode 21

Zining’s death unexpectedly leaves Yu Tangchun in distress. Zhan Junbai returns the gun to Yu Tangchun, reassuring him that he doesn’t have to worry about Zhan Tianqing. Yu Tangchun asks if Zhan Junbai blames him, to which Zhan Junbai asks why would he when Yu Tangchun isn’t the murderer. Yu Tangchun asks if Zining and Zhan Tianqing were both in the wrong. Zhan Junbai puts himself in their shoes and says he doesn’t think they were. 

Liu Li gives Chu Min a present but he is too embarrassed to accept it. 

Jiang Yuelou has a 7-day vacation, but only three days have passed when Sun Yongren says it’s too boring. Song Rong asks Jiang Yuelou what he would do if Jing City really became opium-free. Jiang Yuelou says, if such a day really came, he’d find a companion to go with him to the countryside and watch the sunset. 

Chen Yuzhi scolds Liu Li for teasing Chu Min with the present but Liu Li thinks it’s only right that she pays back her benefactor. Liu Li’s brother and sister-in-law show up at the door to take her away. She refuses to leave with her brother and sister-in-law who smoke opium, and Chen Yuzhi gives them 100 yuan so she could stay. They leave immediately after taking the money. Chen Yuzhi tells Liu Li to find Jiang Yuelou, while he himself tails after them.  

After Jiang Yuelou leaves, Zhong Yiren finds Song Rong and Sun Yongren. She wants Song Rong to explain what had happened to their date. Song Rong makes an excuse about having other important responsibilities. Zhong Yiren asks Song Rong if he has a girlfriend and he lies about having a wife and children at home waiting for him, then immediately leaves. Sun Yongren comforts a depressed Zhong Yiren. 

Chen Yuzhi is tailing Liu Li’s brother and her sister-in-law, and they arrive at the opium trade location. Liu Li tells Jiang Yuelou about the opium den’s location and he rushes there. 

Sun Yongren is letting Zhong Yiren do a palm reading when Song Rong drags him away, telling him there is urgent business.

After meeting up with Chen Yuzhi, he tells them about the secret code. 

Song Rong uses the secret code--three long knocks and two quick knocks--and the door opens. He charges into the room as Jiang Yuelou rushes in behind with his men. They don’t see any signs of opium or anyone smoking opium. When they realize something’s wrong, the door is already closed behind them. Poison pervades the air in the enclosed room, Jiang Yuelou and his men cannot find a way out. Chen Yuzhi hears gunshot and finds them locked in the room. Jin Dacheng arrives with his men shortly after and aids the rescue. 

Sun Yongren gave his damp cloth to Song Rong so he would survive, but he himself dies. Song Rong and Jiang Yuelou are distraught by Sun Yongren’s death.

As Jiang Shengnan’s subordinate, Liu Li fails to kill Jiang Yuelou; Jiang Shengnan gives her a gun, prompting her to kill herself. Liu Li kills herself and Jiang Shengman organizes someone else to deal with Jiang Yuelou. 

Jiang Yuelou leads the funerary salute for the dead soldiers. 

Chen Yuzhi sees Chu Min holding Liu Li’s present, grief laden in his eyes. Chu Min values sentiment and is unable to believe that Liu Li used him. Chu Ran thinks it’s a lesson learned the hard way so he will not easily trust strangers. 

Qiu Ming reports to Zhan Junbai about Jiang Shengnan’s actions. Zhan Junbai thinks she was too conceited--she failed to get rid of Jiang Yuelou and suffered losses instead. 

Jiang Yuelou tells Bai Jinbo about the clues at the opium den. Bai Jinbo expresses his disbelief about why they were so hellbent on eradicating the entire Inspection Department. Jiang Yuelou says he suspects Zhao Jingming isn’t the Third Master. Bai Jinbo instructs Jiang Yuelou to search the docks and train stations to see if he can find any new opium traffickers from outside the city. 

Zhong Yiren dresses up nicely and tells Chu Ran she’s going to find Sun Yongren to hear his jokes. To fulfil Sun Yongren’s dying wishes, Song Rong carries a bouquet to seek Zhong Yiren’s hand in marriage.

Episode 22 

Zhong Yiren thinks that Song Rong asking for her hand in marriage was a joke they were playing on her. She calls for Sun Yongren to come out, and Song Rong tells her Sun Yongren isn’t coming back. She says that the joke wasn’t funny, but she’s visibly unhappy. Song Rong takes her to see Sun Yongren, and they arrive at his grave. Zhong Yiren cries as she burns incense for him.

Jiang Yuelou tells Zhan Junbai about his suspicions of Zhao Jingming not being the real Third Master.

Jiang Shengnan investigates Bai Jinbo’s wife. The informant tells her that the person wasn’t really Bai Jinbo’s wife. She was a barmaid at The Paramount before Bai Jinbo bought her. They lived together for seven years but were not legally wedded, and not many people knew of her existence. Jiang Shengnan suspects Bai Jinbo has unspeakable secrets and orders her subordinate to look into it.

Jiang Yuelou finds Chen Yuzhi. He tells him that he believes the mastermind is somebody close to him, and that they’re acquainted. The mastermind not only included the incident of Chu Min’s bringing Liu Li to Yuzhi Clinic in his designs, but also knew that Chen Yuzhi would agree to let Liu Li stay. Chen Yuzhi agrees with Jiang Yuelou.

Jiang Shengnan brings her subordinate with her to The Paramount. When he seduces Bai Jinbo’s wife to bed, she takes a picture of their deed and uses it to blackmail Bai Jinbo’s wife.

Bai Jinbo holds a conference. Three high officials are to come from Qing City to negotiate Qing City’s jurisdiction, as well as the railroads’ building and maintenance that situates between the two cities. The negotiation has large implications, Cai Changyao places great importance on it. He appoints the police station to supervise the conference’s security. Bai Jinbo chooses Jiang Yuelou and Jin Dacheng to be in charge. Because Jiang Yuelou is still in mourning, he instead appoints Cheng Qing to be in charge and Jiang Yuelou agrees.

Jiang Shengnan wants Bai Jinbo’s wife (Ya Li) to become an informant for her, but Ya Li remembers how Bai Jinbo saved her before. After he emancipated her from The Paramount, she followed him for seven years. She initially thought that she was brought out of hell into heaven, however, she never would’ve thought that Bai Jinbo couldn’t forget his late wife. Ya Li was only a substitute for her. She decides to cooperate with Jiang Shengnan to bring Bai Jinbo down.

Song Rong and Jiang Yuelou finish their report. Jiang Yuelou calls for Cheng Qing and asks him a few questions to which Cheng Qing calmly responds.

Because Yu Tangchun hasn’t performed on stage in a long time, the headmaster of Tianyun Garden wants to sell his garden to another star performer, Boss Su. Yu Tangchun settles in a far-end room in the back garden with no objections. The headmaster wants Yu Tangchun to leave his title behind but Yu Tangchun refuses. Zhan Junbai helps Yu Tangchun.

Chu Min is on vacation approved by Zhan Junbai. He goes to Yuzhi Clinic to find Chen Yuzhi.

Zhan Junbai invites Yu Tangchun to watch Boss Zhang’s opera performance, and Yu Tangchun understands his intentions to help him out with the social tension. Zhan Junbai invites Yu Tangchun to move into the Zhan residence which Yu Tangchun rejects.

Jiang Yuelou arrives at Yuzhi Clinic, asking Chen Yuzhi to help him keep an eye on Jing'an Hotel’s kitchen when they prepare meals. He also wants him to check the food for poison. Chen Yuzhi agrees to help.

Yu Tangchun watches Boss Zhang’s performance. He tells Zhan Junbai that Boss Zhang should stop singing or else he’d harm his vocal cords. Zhan Junbai instead, wants to give Boss Zhang a lesson. Yu Tangchun says Zhan Junbai is too harsh with his punishment, and Zhan Junbai realizes Yu Tangchun is mad. He lets Qiu Ming tell Boos Zhang to stop singing. The performance ends and Zhan Junbai invites Yu Tangchun to the Zhan Residence; Yu Tangchun agrees this time.

When Chu Ran retrieves the photographs from her camera, and sees a picture of Chen Yuzhi and Jiang Yuelou together. She suspects Chu Min had taken it.

Jiang Yuelou and Chen Yuzhi eat at the wonton shop in celebration of progress made in Jiang Yuelou’s treatment. 

Jin Dacheng calls Bai Jinbo to let him know about the organization of security in Jing’an Hotel. Ya Li overhears their conversation and sneaks into Bai Jinbo’s office to report holes in the hotel security to Jiang Shengnan. Jiang Shengnan hears from her subordinate that Cheng Qing has intel: the police will depart at eight o’clock to pick up the officials. They decide to make their move at Jing’an Hotel.

Episode 24

Chen Yu Zhi remembers the day of the incident, he bumped into a suspicious man. He describes the man and Jiang Yuelou asks Song Rong to track down the person. 

While Chu Ran is developing the photos, she is being distracted by Cheng Qing. Unable to find photos taken of Jiang Shengnan, he leaves but finds himself surrounded by Jiang Yuelou’s men. They interrogate him wanting to know who the woman in the picture is, but he wouldn’t say.  Jiang Yuelou, Chen Yuzhi and Chu Ran hear a gunshot. They find Cheng Qing dead. 

Zhan Junbai intimidates and threatens Jiang Shengnan to not fail another time. When Yu Tangchun brings Zhan Junbai a tea to help him sleep, he accidentally overhears their conversation. As he leaves, he is called back. Yu Tangchun pretends to not have heard him talk on the phone and serves him the tea.Zhan Junbai is still worried that Yu Tangchun overheard the contents of his phone call, so he deliberately calls Qiu Ming to ask him about Yu Tangchun’s activities when he is not at home. Qiu Ming replies that he is reading books, listening to opera, sometimes goes for a walk in the park, practices shooting but that he had never been to the study. To be sure, he tells him to investigate Yu Tangchun again.When Bai Jinbo is not paying attention, Yali secretly looks at his work documents, afterwards she goes to coax him, he however drives her away. Remembering her old goodness, he is sad.Bai Jinbo tells Jiang Yuelou that the judges have suspended his case but to prove his innocence, they still need to find the informant. They speculate the person is not within the police department.Yali tells Jiang Shengnan that Bai Jinbo has documents on the police department secretly preparing the arsenal.

Bai Jinbo explains to Jiang Yuelou that they were preparing the arsenal as a defense against rebels due to the chaotic circumstances close to the city. Commander Zhan has been stationed in the city for this purpose. He lets Jiang Yuelou take charge of this task.

Yu Tangchun goes to see Chen Yuzhi at his clinic. Chen Yu Zhi takes his pulse, informing him that he would not survive the winter. Yu Tangchun does not like winter and wants to survive until spring, so that Chen Yu Zhi could bury him in an apricot grove in the east of the city. He asks him for a medicine that would allow people to die peacefully without pain. Chen Yu Zhi does not have that kind of Drug, but with Zhan Junbais abilities, he should be able to provide it, however Yu Tangchun does not want to involve others.

Jiang Yuelou takes a few trusted men to the warehouse where they are ambushed. Jiang Yuelou is shot down. While covering him, Song Rong is shot and killed by Jiang Shengnan.

Bai Jinbo hears of the incident at the warehouse and comes for the rescue.As Jiang Yuelou faints, he confuses the approaching Jiang Shengnan with his mother. As he collapses, she sees the birthmark on his back, realizing that he is her son.Bai Jinbo rushes Jiang Yuelou to Chen Yuzhi’s clinic. His condition is unstable.Qiu Ming reports on the outcome of the fight between Jiang Yuelou and Jiang Shengnan to Zhan Junbai. He had anticipated the fight between mother and son revealing that this was his intention.During Jiang Shengnan’s interrogation by Bai Jinbo she accidentally calls Jiang Yuelou by his birth name.Zhan Junbai finds out that Jiang Shengnan is alive and well. He is however not worried that she will betray him for the sake of her son in jail.Chen Yuzhi personally takes care of Jiang Yuelou.Bai Jinbo tells Jiang Shengnan how he saved the 16 year old Jiang Yuelou from debtors.

Episode 26
Jiang Yuelou does not forgive Jiang Shengnan, and she does not name the master behind the scenes.

Bai Jinbo checks his watch, saying that their time is almost up. Chen Yuzhi does not know what Bai Jinbo is referring to.

As the poison breaks out and Jiang Shengnan falls to the ground, Jiang Yuelou can’t bear to see her hurt. In his embrace, with her last breaths she makes him promise to take good care of himself and to be careful of the third master. Only after she has taken her last breath is he willing to call her his mother.

After calming down Jiang Yuelou sits down at the table and eats the meal his mother had made for him. Observing Jiang Yuelou, Bai Jinbo tells Chen Yuzhi that she committed suicide so she wouldn’t hurt him and that preparing him food was her last request. Before Bai Jinbo leaves, he gives Jiang Yuelou into Chen Yuzhi’s care.

Chen Yuzhi comforts Jiang Yuelou. He regrets that he couldn't let Jiang Shengnan see him eat her meal.

Chen Yuzhi brings Jiang Yuelou home, but worries about letting him stay alone, he however tells him he is going to be fine. Both go to their own houses.

Jiang Yuelou has a dream of his childhood, eating with his family happily. Waking up in a panic, he takes his medication.

The next day, Jin Dacheng investigates the murder of Yang Jing. He finds a watch similar to Jiang Yuelou’s at the scene of the crime and reports the incident to Bai Jinbo. Enraged Bai Jinbo asks Jiang Yuelou for the whereabouts of his watch, but in a daze he says it is lost. Jin Dacheng shows him the watch, which he recognises as his own. Jiang Yuelou admits to having killed Yang Jing himself. In a fit of rage, Bai Jinbo slaps him, telling him he has gone insane. Yuelou instead says that if it hadn’t been for Yang Jing, his family wouldn’t have fallen apart. Bai Jinbo asks him to be taken away.

Chen Yuzhi goes to Jiang Yuelou's home and sees medicine all over the floor.

Bai Jinbo wants to conceal Jiang Yuelou murdered someone, but Jin Dacheng has already notified reporters. 

Chen Yuzhi arrives at the police station where he runs into Chu Ran. She tells him she is there to interview over a recent massacre and Chen Yuzhi tells her how he had found medicine scattered on Yuelou’s floor. The police drives away the reporters. 

Yu Tangchun crushes medicine that could make people die in their sleep to powder.

Qiu Ming tells Zhan Junbai of Jiang Yuelou's confession. Zhan Junbai suspects that there’s something strange, but he does not dare to act rashly, so he asks Qiu Ming to proceed according to the original plan.

Zhan Junbai is going to see Zhan Tianqing. Before he leaves, Yu Tangchun brings him a dish he had made himself and asks Zhan Junbai to take it to Zhan Tianqing. He is worried that there is something wrong with the dish, so he instructs Qiu Ming to have someone check it.

In order to maintain the police precinct’s reputation, Cai Changyao asks Bai Jinbo to quickly close the case and secretly execute Jiang Yuelou, announcing that he was killed in the line of duty.

Chen Yuzhi learns from Bai Jinbo that Jiang Yuelou was responsible for the massacre, but he doesn’t believe that Jiang Yuelou would kill people easily. 

Bai Jinbo explains to him that the dead Yang Jing was Jiang Yuelou’s father’s loan shark, making his father betray his mother and hunt him down for the money when his father died. After Bai Jinbo had adopted him, he had cut off Yang Jing’s means of making money and started a small business.

Zhan Junbai and Zhan Tianqing celebrate Jiang Yuelou’s downfall. They can now realise their wish of owning firearms in Jing City.

Bai Jinbo does not want Jiang Yuelou to die and asks Chen Yuzhi how they could buy more time to come up with a plan. He proposes to use Jiang Yuelou's mental issues to alleviate Jiang Yuelou's crimes. Bai Jinbo is willing to give it a try.

After Chu Ran and Chen Yuzhi exchanged information, they use their respective strengths to help Jiang Yuelou solve the murder case.

Chu Min watches Yu Tangchun's affectionate performance.
