Ouch. I saw thousands on a tweet. So it was hundreds.
How many lives did he have left when he went to war? And is the enemy he was fighting against the Xiyan?
Edit: Scratch that, I read someone say it's against Xuan's.
chase_kayden:Ouch.

That's the part I kept forgetting. I've reread stuff but not enough. So I'm confused about him losing all his lives tbh. I think most likely what will happen is that he will "die" several times during the final showdown until he finally loses his last life.
As for the enemy, yes cause at that point Xuan has successfully united the realm.

chase_kayden:Btw, how did XL die?
After stabbing himself in the heart and using one of his nine lives to kill the poisonous bug in his heart (severing his connection with XY without killing her), obtaining XY's blood to create a jewel that could be used to revive TSJ so he could reunite with XY, and pushing XY to cut all ties with XL, XL returns to the Sheng Nong resistance army.
In the end, XL makes a last stand with the final remnants of the Sheng Nong resistance army and disguises himself as Gong Gong. In the last battle, it was 100,000 Xuan Yuan soldiers against 1,000 Sheng Nong soldiers. Despite being heavily injured, not even the strongest Xuan Yuan warrior could defeat XL. He was finally killed when 10,000 arrows were fired at him at once. Only when he died and his true demon form was revealed did General Ru So realize he had been tricked, but the general was relieved rather than angry because XL was his army's most challenging enemy who had killed more of his soldiers than anyone else. General Ru So respected XL and prevented his soldiers from approaching and desecrating his body, which was lucky for them because his body dissolved into poisonous black blood that destroyed every living thing on the island where XL died. Anyone who tried to desecrate his body would have been killed.
As XY notes, it's exactly the death that XL thought was best. He died fighting on the battlefield. Even more than that: he died in a glorious last stand after having remained true to Gong Gong and his cause to the very end, he managed to save Gong Gong against impossible odds, he received respect from the enemy general, he left his enemies with fear and awe and no ability to desecrate or disrespect his remains, and he left XY with all the things she didn't have when they met that he always wanted to give her: the ability to look after herself (with her archery), a person to rely on (TSJ) and a place that she would always be able to go (the Ocean).

chase_kayden:How many lives did he have left when he went to war? And is the enemy he was fighting against the Xiyan?
We don't know for sure, but since he seems to have died only once in the final report of the last battle, it would seem that he only had one life left at that point. We know he used at least one life (along with his essential blood) to bring XY back from the brink of death once. He probably had to do the same the second time he revived her - so that's two lives there. Then he used another life when he killed the poisonous bug in his heart and severed his connection with XY. So that's three lives sacrificed for XY's sake, without even getting into any lives he might have lost in battle or in the slave demon death matches.

In the novel it says that the final battle on the island began with 100,000 Xuan Yuan soldiers, and ended when General So Ro commanded all of his soldiers to fire their arrows at "Gong Gong" at once. And that XL (disguised as Gong Gong) finally died when over 10,000 arrows were fired at him. I interpreted that to mean that by the end of the battle XL and his 1,000 remaining Sheng Nong soldiers had managed to kill 90,000 out of 100,000 Xuan Yuan soldiers before they were finally defeated.

If that's true then I can see how he was able to used up his remaining his lives cause that's alot of soldiers. Basically suicide mission.

@AH Thank you. Gosh, reading those is just so sad. But also, what an honorable death for a soldier. I also think it was a befitting end for him.

thank you for quoting this... it is giving me goosebumbs by just reading this... I have just started reading the novel, motivated by all the quotes you guys have included on this discussion! watching the love of XL for XY is so painful, and of course I am sad that he will just disappear from XY's life... still his character from the novel and the way TJC has given life to XL as an actor, will stay with me for a very long time ...

MimiLy:Really tried to like him, but can’t get passed the abusive toxic tsundere personality. I understand he loves her but I just can’t picture him being good for her.
I feel like one of the biggest reasons I ended up liking XL (after initially not liking him) was that XY clearly enjoys spending time with him, wants to spend more time with him, and wishes she met him sooner and was the person who saved him (in which case, she would make him only be the version of himself that could be her companion and spend more time with her).
Chapter 16:
When they were out playing, it was like the two of them were just enjoying life. Two people who didn’t care about anything, who were willing to try everything, became partners venturing out into the dizzying world. Many things in life feel different when done with a companion, rather than alone. Dining, no matter how delicious, just doesn’t taste as good alone. Xiao Yao believed Fang Feng Bei also understood how she felt which is why he never hesitated and introduced her to everything he could think of and then took her to experience it. Xiao Yao sometimes felt Fang Feng Bei was like a child who was lonely for too long. He had played with too many toys alone and it was no longer interesting. Now he had a companion, he couldn’t wait to take her to play, to experience what he tried. It appeared just casual but was in truth very sincere. Gradually, Xiao Yao started sincerely eating, drinking, and being merry with him.
[Xiao Yao goes on to describe how patient and thoughtful FFB is when he takes her out to shop, eat, and hike in the mountains.]
Chapter 19:
Every few days she would go find Fang Feng Bei to practice archery and afterwards head to the city of Zhi Yi and Zhe Province to play. Fang Feng Bei lived up to his reputation as a consummate ne’er-do-well playboy for the last four hundred years, he knew Zhi Yi and Zhe Province like the back of his hand. Whatever nook and cranny had something fun, he could find it, whatever was tasty, he would find it. The two of them were each other’s companion as they enjoyed life’s endless pleasures…
When she was with Fang Feng Bei, Xiao Yao often forgot her identity and she would feel like she was still Wen Xiao Liu except wearing girl clothes… Xiao Yao knew Fang Feng Bei was Xiang Liu, but because this wasn’t the battlefield and he wasn’t being a cold and ruthless battle god, it was like he took off his armor and resumed living the ordinary life as well. He was a spare son who didn’t have any ambition or influence, she was an ordinary goddess girl with very low power. No one ever paid them any attention…
Xiao Yao stared at the empty plate and her heart soared. “The only person who can make poisons this tasty in the entire world is me!” Bei laughed back “And the only person in the entire world who can appreciate your great “cooking” talents is me!” Xiao Yao sassed back “It’s enough to have a true soulmate.” … Xiao Yao couldn’t help it and sighed loudly and murmured, “If only you can forever be Fang Feng Bei, that would be so great!”
Chapter 23:
Xiao Yao walked and talked. “I was thinking that when you escaped the slave death-match arena, wouldn’t it have been great if I was the one who saved you? If that was the case, then I would let you only be Fang Feng Bei. I really hate that I wasn’t born a few hundred years earlier. I would definitely find you in the slave death-match arena!” Bei stopped and stared at Xiao Yao. Xiao Yao turned and stared at him, their eyes meeting in the darkness, wanting to say more but not.
Chapter 26:
When they reached the surface it was already sunset. Xiao Yao realized they spent a day and a night under the sea. Xiang Liu took Xiao Yao to an island, Xiao Yao grilled two fishes for herself and roasted a giant suckling pig sized fish for Xiang Liu…
After Xiang Liu was done eating he said “Let’s go back.” Xiao Yao didn’t move and continued to stare at the ocean. If it was possible, she really wanted to live like this for the rest of her life. “Xiao Yao?” Xiang Liu stood before Xiao Yao. She raised her head to stare at him and smiled “Don’t you feel like today was a day we stole to spend together? That there is only now and no tomorrow!”
I hope we get to see this, specifically chp. 23 and 26, in the show. I can already picture their faces. YZ and TJC are so talented.

Wow! Thank you for posting these, AH. I've been wrestling with the FFB personality and how it fits with XL, and this Chapter 19 excerpt really hits home for me. I think it's a little more complicated than that, but I love the idea that the demon side, the cold ruthlessness is armor for war, that can be taken off for an ordinary life.
And the take of FFB as a kid with toys is super! The idea that FFB is also lonely and seeks to change that with her is a common element with both XL and FFB.
I also agree. XY likes XL and enjoys much that they do together. She's not afraid of him and doesn't want to kill him.

Wow! Thank you Sirry for these lovely selected paragraphs from the novel.
So they had some kind of 10+ wonderful years of love story. Love in the eyes of a woman is not exactly the same as a man. For men intimacy is a big part of it. For a women love could be a safe heaven in the arms of her love with no sexual intimacy. FFB gave it to her while she still stayed true to her love for Jing without breaking her promise to him. I believe, respect and could accept her love for both of them. Problem would be if Jing and/ or XL/FFB could accept sharing her heart with the other one. I doubt it.
Along with some other reasons, XL , our General won’t be a good husband and father for XY‘s kids specially with her experience with her mother who left/ abandoned her while she needed her the most. “Been there done that” She won’t do that to her kids.
As to CX, she won’t be his first priority. On top of that she can’t share her love with other women in his haram. She even told him that her love/husband can’t be with other woman. So her love for him stays as brotherly love.
Young and foolish FL could be only a backup plan for both love and family in her life.
Here comes Jing. She already gave her heart and promises to him, despite of the heartbreaking situation and long waiting time. She sacrifices a lot for having a true love and happy family in her life journey similar to Jing.

XL's whole deal is that he not only accepts XY's love for TSJ, he makes great personal sacrifices to orchestrate their reunion and happy ending. If he made less noble choices, XL could've easily left TSJ for dead and run away with XY himself.
And if XL made the choice to allow himself to be with XY as her husband and the father of her children, I feel like he would actually be an incredible husband and father? We know from XY's visit to XL's military camp that (to XY's surprise) he is very self disciplined. We know from his relationship with Gong Gong and FFB's mother that he is an extremely dutiful, loyal and devoted son. We know from his relationship with XY that he his capable of great self-sacrifice, and we know from his time as FFB that he is very capable of being thoughtful, patient, and doting in a day-to-day setting over a long period of time.
Kokuto:Hope we get to see it. I'm all for more XL scenes.
Hmmmm. I need to get my timeline together. It sounds like he hasn't been with the Chenrong that long at all then -- immortally speaking. He's been FFB longer than with them, I believe. I guess Gong Gong rescued him from the slave arena, and then they separated for a while.
Tbh the timeline is confusing. XY's mom died when she and CX were kids. We saw that in episode one when she went off to war. That also means her father was still alive at that point since both parents died in that war.
And if XL wasn't in the rebel army yet, it means he was probably still a kid himself. I'm going to assume that he isn't that much older than XY and CX. His exact words were (when XY asked him about her father), he said, "he was dead a couple hundred years before I join" something along those lines. Someone can correct since it's directly from the novel and I'm just going off memories.

XL became FFB 480 years before XY met FFB, which was before XY was born. I'm not sure how old XL was when he escaped from the demon slave death match arena, but when he did he was injured and found by Gong Gong. Gong Gong tried to treat his wounds, but XL didn't trust him, wounded him, and ran away. I'm a bit fuzzy on this part and need to re-check the details, but I think XL went to the north pole at that point and wandered there for a while before he met the real FFB. Then he spent 4 years looking after FFB's mother, and I assume he re-connected with Gong Gong and joined his army some time after that.

chase_kayden:So XY died twice? The one is in Ep 30 and then there's another one?
I'm not sure anyone responded to this? The answer is yes. She is assassinated in chapter 21 of the novel (as we saw in episode 30) and revived by XL in chapter 22 of the novel (we saw a small part of this in episode 30). She later poisons herself to death and XL saves her again (but hides the fact that it's him) in chapter 48 of the novel, which won't be covered in the drama for a long time. Chapter 51 is the last chapter of the novel, excluding the epilogue.

This will be spoiler heavy...
First, it's important to know that when TSJ disappeared, XY asked XL for help looking for him and said she would agree to any price in exchange for his help as long as it had nothing to do with ZX. XL agreed and the price he asked for was XY promising to live even if TSJ was dead.
Later (shortly before his death) XL makes XY realize that ZX is responsible for TSJ's death (this was information that she needed to know for several reasons, including the fact that XL had just orchestrated TSJ's resurrection so that he could return to XY). Despite her promise to XL, XY poisons ZX and herself. The dose she gave to ZX was not enough to kill him before his attendants found him, because she couldn't bring herself to actually kill ZX. But the dose she gave herself was higher and actually was lethal.

Minny Me.11:How many lives did it cost him to save XY twice? It was 2...? Right?
XL uses at least one of his lives to revive XY after her assassination (she mentions it in chapter 26 of the novel). He might also use one of his lives to revive XY a second time after she poisons herself to death. The process he uses to revive her the second time is different and much faster and the novel doesn't specify whether he uses a life to resurrect her at that point or not.
XL also uses a jewel that he creates from XY's blood to bring TSJ back from the "dead" (note that XY gave TSJ a life-preserving pill before he died, which may have acted like the poisonous bug connection to keep him from completely dying). XL might have used a life as part of TSJ's revival process as well. The novel doesn't specify that he does, but some fans seem to think that he would have needed to.
XL definitely uses a life to kill the poisonous bugs right after reviving XY for the second time (the novel is clear about that). This severs his connection with XY before the final battle where he knows he will die.
AH VIP 3 hours ago
Okay YaoLiu fans, I think I have a working idea for an alternative ending (to live in my head - not one that needs to be used for the drama).
Change 1: The poisonous bugs will not consume the hosts body, soul and essence before the host dies. So XL doesn't have to worry about preventing that.
Change 2: TSJ stays dead. He never used a life preserving pill and doesn't have a poisonous bug connection to keep him alive, so in this scenario there is no way for XL to resurrect him.
Change 3: While she was semi-conscious during her 37 year healing / resurrection process, XY learned how to summon XL's clam shell.
Change 4: Instead of killing the poisonous bugs right after he resurrects XY for the second time by stabbing himself in the heart, XL plans to kill them by freezing his heart in the seconds before his death on the battlefield. He does so when the 10,000 arrows are shot at him at once, but he isn't aware that this doesn't actually kill the poisonous bugs, it just makes the connection between him and XY go dormant temporarily. When XL "dies", the magic XL used to freeze the bugs breaks and the bugs thaw. The connection between XL and XY is restored, and this time it keeps *him* alive. But now XL isn't controlling the connection, so XY can finally feel XL through it. She was about to become the Royal Mother of Jade Mountain until she feels XL at death's door, which prompts her to fly to him immediately. Sir Bi follows her.
As in the original ending, General Ru So respected XL and stopped his soldiers from going onto the island to desecrate XL's body. When XY arrives to collect XL's body, they allow her to do so (and maybe General Ru So is even among the people who know about XL saving XY the first time she died?). XY was planning to to take XL's body to the ocean, but Sir Bi stops her and tells her to bring XL's body to Jade Mountain. In order to convince her that XL would be safe there, Sir Bi tells XY how XL was the one who secretly saved her life a second time at Jade Mountain and that the Royal Mother knew about it. So XY takes XL's body to Jade Mountain and summons XL's clam shell in the healing lake. This time, she uses it to heal and resurrect him instead of the other way around. When XL finally wakes up, he doesn't re-instate control over the poisonous bug bond immediately (maybe he initially thinks he is in some sort of death dream), so XY can finally feel all of his emotions - including his love for her.
Change 5: Instead of running away to the Ocean with TSJ (who, in this scenario, is dead), XY runs away to the Ocean with XL. He takes her to explore all of the scattered islands she wanted to explore, and all of the beauties below the surface. Fulfilling the wish she makes in chapter 26 (if it were possible, she would like to spend the rest of her life like how she spent the previous day and night with XL). But first XY brings XL to her family grave site and also to meet her adoptive father. And XL brings XY to meet his adoptive father. After years of exploring together (with XL's clam as their home), XL builds a new home for XY on her favourite island. It's not so different from her clinic in QS town. A little nicer (a bit more like her biological father's home), but simple and comfortable. XY and XL each invite their adoptive fathers, as well as A Nian, Left Ear and Miao Pu to a simple wedding ceremony, much like the wedding ceremony between Ma Zi and Chun Tao at XY's clinic that XL attended in the first chapter of the novel. XY writes a letter to ZX, hoping that he is well, and asks A Nian to deliver it for her. Perhaps it all ends with XY, XL and their two children taking turns swinging on a swing under the ocean. Mirroring XY's memory of swinging with her loved ones under the phoenix trees when she was a child, but now in a place where she truly belongs with loved ones that will be with her for the rest of her life.

I think I need to rewatch Sound of the Desert to help get past the YaoLiu feelings. It feels like the opposite of this drama. The nobleman who is a very powerful figure in the world of trade who also has healing skills, is crippled, doesn't want to get involved in politics and is quietly devoted to the FL doesn't end up with her. Instead, the talented general who keeps the FL company to alleviate her loneliness (and who has a personality that is more similar to the FL's) ends up with her, has a son with her, and runs away with her - to the desert instead of the ocean! And there's a powerful prince-turned-king who was raised with the FL and is obsessed with finding her, but he is only a very small part of the story. Kind of perfect actually.

HeadInTheClouds:
AH :
Previously, TSJ wasn't able to be hard-hearted towards his grandmother, TSH or FFYY, even though his soft-heartedness hurt XY. XY was understanding of his position, and even said that she would have left him if he had been hard-hearted enough to kill FFYY in those circumstances ("Honestly, if Jing was like you and was hardhearted enough to decide on the plan to kill Fang Feng Yi Yang to end the engagement, then I would actually leave him.").
Framing Jing's failure to address the situation with Hou and his grandmother and FFYY as hardhearted vs. soft/kind-hearted is myopic and distorted. Xiao Yao's judgement here is not trustworthy and very much comes from her psychological deficiencies. Setting boundaries is not being hard-hearted.
l
AH :IMO, TSJ did set some boundaries. But he wasn't willing to take ruthless measures against his family.
He directly opposed his grandmother's wishes and outright refused to proceed with the wedding to FFYY until he was trapped by FFYY and his grandmother with the fake rape and pregnancy, at which point XY chose to leave him.
Later, he worked with XY to expose FFYY and TSH's affair and to have them punished, but wasn't willing to see either of them killed for it.
Later still, he clipped TSH's wings (which, as XL explains to XY, would have been a sufficient option if CX hadn't gotten involved) instead of killing him.
l
Kokuto:Again. The first boundary he should have set was around himself and his desires. He wouldn't be in this situation if he hadn't extracted the prison promise.
Kokuto the type of boundary you're describing is a self-limitation boundary that TSJ could have imposed on himself to prevent his own improper actions. But HeadInTheClouds and I were discussing boundaries that he could have set, or did set, between himself and other people to limit the impact that the improper actions of those other people had on him, and (by extension) on XY.
Kokuto:Jing is supposed to be extremely smart and the best at getting a deal, and yet he couldn't figure out a way to get out of this mess? He could have just renounced everything and gone back to being 17, or at least threatened to do so.
TSJ did threaten to renounce everything in chapter 23, as soon as he returned to Qing Qiu after XY revived him from his coma. He was persistent, but his grandmother revealed that she was dying, and in great pain, and used that to force her way.
------
Chapter 23:
Jing returned to Qing Qiu around midnight but ordered the servants not to alert the Grand Madam and he’ll go see her when she rose in the morning.
...
Jing greeted his brother and sister-in-law and the Grand Madam pointed to Yi Yang. “You need to thank Yi Yang, she’s been so busy on your behalf all these years.”
Jing politely bowed to Yi Yang but said nothing. After he straightened himself he turned to his grandmother. “I have something to say to grandmother.”
...
Jing knelt down. “I want to quickly end my engagement with Yi Yang. Please will grandmother permit it.”
The Grand Madam was not surprised. “I knew you would say this. I also know what I will say back: Impossible!”
Jing begged, “I have no feelings towards Yi Yang and she feels the same towards me. Why won’t grandmother let us end the engagement?”
“I can see you don’t have feelings for her, but I can’t see that she doesn’t have feelings for you!”
Jing raised his head. “I already love another, please will grandmother permit!”
The Grand Madam sighed. “Silly child, how long do you think feelings will last? Day after day, the endless time together, all feelings will be smoothed out until all that remains is lightness. Actually, a married couple is more like a business partnership, you give her what she needs, she gives you what you need, you respect her one step, she respects you one step. Back and forth, like flowing water lasting for a long time.”
“Grandmother, I will not marry Yi Yang!”
“If you are Hou then you can do whatever you want and I don’t care! But you are the future Tu Shan clan leader, and the leader determines the rise and fall of the entire clan! Yi Yang is smart and careful, plus the Fang Feng clan relies on the Tu Shan clan which further limits her options. Trust grandmother’s judgment, she is the best choice for the leader’s wife! For the Tu Shan clan, you must marry her!”
Jing said, “I don’t want to be the clan leader, let older brother be the clan leader!”
“You wretch!” The Grand Madam slapped the table and all the plates and cups shattered on the floor and the tea splashed Jing. The Grand Madam touched her heart. “Sixty years! I spent sixty years training the best clan leader's wife, I don’t have another sixty years left!”
Jing kept bowing his head even as his forehead slammed into the broken shards on the ground and jabbed into his flesh. “If grandmother doesn’t agree to end the engagement, then I can only leave the Tu Shan clan.”
The Grand Madam’s body shook and she pointed at Jing. “If you want me to die, then leave! You might as well strangle me now. If I die, then you can do whatever you want and no one will care.”
Jing kept bowing and begging, “Grandmother!”
The Grand Madam called her maid, “Xiao Yu, tell this wretch to scram!”
Xiao Yu walked in. “Please will young master not distress the Grand Madam and allow her to rest!”
Jing saw her clutching her chest and her face had turned purple so he immediately left.
But he didn’t leave and only knelt down in the courtyard. The maid reported it to the Grand Madam but she kept her eyes closed. “Ignore him! Call all the clan elders here!”
Jing knelt outside her room for a day and a night but the Grand Madam ignored him and continued to arrange matters with the clan elders.
After everything was arranged, she had servants bring everyone back. Jing was just recovered from a long illness and had knelt for so long that his face was pale white and his forehead bloody and bruised, looking very ragged. Hou and Yi Yang saw him like that and the hatred in their eyes flitted past.
...
Jing knelt down. “Grandmother, the clan leader matter can wait a few years.”
The Grand Madam raged. “A few years? How many years do you think I have left? Your grandfather died shortly after your father was born and I had to steel myself and run the entire clan. I finally lasted until your father married and became the clan leader and thought I could take a break….but that wretch actually left before me! I almost collapsed that time but thank goodness your mom stepped up to manage the clan. Us two widows raised the pair of you but your mom didn’t get to enjoy any happiness before leaving to join that wretch. I pray day and night that you will take over as clan leader, but then you disappeared for years! I got you back after ten years and before I could even let out a sigh of relief, you went unconscious and wouldn’t wake up. How much longer do I have left for you to torment?”
The Grand Madam spoke and a lifetime of pain and hard work rose up and the normally stalwart her began to cry.
Hou, Lan Mu, and Yi Yang all knelt down before her and the Grand Madam wiped her tears. “I don’t care what you guys think, this time Tu Shan Jing is going to become the clan leader regardless of whether you want to or not.”
Jing continued to bow his head on the ground and begged, “Grandmother, I really don’t want to be clan leader! Older brother is the elder, why can’t he become the clan leader?”
The Grand Madam shouted, “Wretch! You know the answer and yet you still ask? Some things can be concealed to the world but can’t be concealed from those who are close. Your maternal grandfather was the last leader of the Tan family, and the current leader is your uncle. Your maternal grandmother was the eldest daughter of the Chi Sui clan, the current cousin of the clan leader. Hou…..will they accept him as clan leader?”
The Grand Madam clutched her heart and cried, “Wretch, tell me! Will the Chi Sui, Xi Ling, and the Middle Plains Six Big Families all agree with you not being the clan leader?”
Jing pleaded, “I can go convince them one by one.”
The Grand Madam cried, “You think I don’t know all the things you’ve done behind my back all these years? The clan elders only accept you. They won’t allow you not to be the clan leader.”
Jing could only keep pleading and bowing his head. “Grandmother, I really don’t want to be clan leader, older brother wants to be clan leader!”
...
Jing also bowed his head hard. “Please cancel the clan leader ceremony three days from now. I don’t want to be clan leader.” Still he refused to accept the clan leader role.
The Grand Madam stared at her grandsons. Her heartbreak, rage, and despair all rushed to her heart and suddenly all her blood burst forth and she spit out blood that splattered on Jing and Hou.
Both Jing and Hou jumped up and went to assist her but her face was ashen and she was barely breathing.
...
The Grand Madam smiled bitterly. “I won’t hide it from you two anymore, I have at most a year left to live.”
...
Se Mai Er explained, “The prohibited magic of voodoo is that it allows a person to accomplish their greatest desire, but conversely before death the person will endure the greatest pain of the voodoo bug collecting on its equal payment. A person will endure the pain of the bug eating all the insides until the body, soul, and essence is all consumed by the bug. In the end, there is nothing remaining, not even a corpse.”
...
The Grand Madam laughed “How could I? Because of you two wretches! Even if I endure the most horrific pain and have no corpse left, if I can protect the Tu Shan clan then after I die I will have done my duty to our ancestors and not be ashamed before them……” The Grand Madam suddenly stopped talking and she curled up in pain. Jing and Hou rushed over to help her.
...
Jing and Hou glared at each other in rage but when they heard their grandmother scream in agony, both closed their eyes in pain. Because of them, their most loved one must endure the agony of a voodoo bug consuming her insides.
The Grand Madam’s maid Xiao Yu walked out. “Two young masters, please leave now! The Grand Madam must endure the agony an hour a day now but most of the time she’ll be lucid. In time the pain will grow longer and her mental acuity will leave her. She said earlier that she has at most a year left, but really it’s half a year only.”
Xiao Yu started crying. “For hundreds of years I’ve taken care of the Grand Madam and seen what she has done for the Tu Shan clan, what she has done for you both. If both of you even have a shred of filial piety left in you, then please accept the Grand Madam’s wishes for the sake of the Tu Shan clan. When she is lucid let her see the new clan leader emerge so that she can die in peace, so that this pain is worth it.”
...
Jing stared at Li Li but didn’t know where to go. He thought he could leave Qing Qiu and wander the world just the two of them. But the truth was that he could never leave Qing Qiu.
...
He was willing to give up everything, but he could not give up his bloodline.
...
Jing grabbed Xiao Yao suddenly in a tight embrace, his body cold after being in the rain for so long. Xiao Yao silently let him hold her.
After some time Jing said, “Grandmother used a prohibited voodoo bug spell. The voodoo bug has backfired and is consuming her insides.”
When the voodoo bug backfires, there is not much time left to live. Xiao Yao was stunned and didn’t know how to comfort Jing so could only stroke his back.
Jing said, “Grandmother wants me to assume the clan leader position in three days time. I can’t say no anymore.”
Xiao Yao said, “I understand.”
“I had decided that regardless of whether Grandmother agreed or not, I was going to be with you….but now….I’m sorry!”
“It’s okay, it’s really okay!”
Xiao Yao sighed. It wasn’t that she didn’t care but if Jing’s grandmother was willing to give up her life and Jing selfishly chose to leave the Tu Shan clan to be with her, then he wouldn’t be the Jing that Xiao Yao liked.
That night Jing didn’t go back to Qing Qiu.

That would not have been a good move for him or for XY.
TSJ could not just renounce his family name, his title, his wealth, and his status for several reasons:
- Doing so would be seen as him being massively ungrateful, unfilial and disrespectful towards his grandmother, who was his elder (someone he was supposed to show respect and be filial to) and someone he cared for / viewed as having doted on him and having helped raise him with great care.
- Doing so would feel like / be seen as him shirking his responsibility to his family / clan.
- As TSJ tells XY in chapter 14, "After going back, I realized my brother has been leading the clan into danger. If I leave, I worry he will destroy the family."
- Doing so would mean drastically decreasing his ability to be with XY in any capacity in the short term, and to have a proper relationship / marriage with XY in the long term.
- This is also addressed in chapter 14: And he thought to himself, "It actually wasn’t just his family, if Xiao Yao was Wen Xiao Liu then he would be Ye Shi Qi with her in some remote mountain for the rest of their lives. But she was the Gao Xing Princess, and seeing her at the massive royal ceremony, he knew that neither of them could go back. A man who deserved to be with Xiao Yao couldn’t be a coward, if he wanted to be with her, then he needed to end the engagement. He needed to be Tu Shan Jing and openly walk to be with Xiao Yao."
- Doing so would have severely limited his ability to help XY and CX.
- Doing so would have run the risk of making him a pariah in XY's world, and perhaps even a liability to her.
If TSJ threatened to do so without actually being willing to follow through and was called on his bluff, that would incur some of the same drawbacks as going through with it (massive disrespect to his Grandmother, for one) which would undermine the goodwill he was banking on to help change her mind, and it would have destroyed his credibility. Why would his Grandmother ever take his position on these issues (the engagement with FFYY / becoming clan leader / marrying XY) seriously ever again if she successfully called his bluff like that? If he had any hope at all, that would have killed it. Making an empty bluff would have been a terrible move.

what I am trying to say is that her assassination wasn't really the pivotal point that made XL push XY away from him, he already started to take this route even before that. Hence, I personally belive he never really visualised a future with her, but I know a lot of people think differently and belive that the assassination was the turning point for XL.
But had he pushed her away before the assassination? He wasn't pushing her away here, though, as I said, I think he may have realized that choice for the first time here.
IMO, XL was (for the most part - the half-serious and not followed through with "wander the world with me" suggestion doesn't fit neatly into a box) tempering XY's expectations and preparing her for a time when he would not be with her from the beginning of his relationship with her as FFB, but was more direct and consistent about it after the assassination attempt and 37 years of healing. And he didn't start to actively push XY towards TSJ until after the 37 years of healing, unless you count XL abandoning XY in the ocean and letting her swim back to TSJ in chapter 13/14 as XL pushing XY towards TSJ.

Chapter 16 (before FFB's identity as XL is confirmed, and before the 37 years of healing)
Fang Feng Bei wasn’t free every day and usually came by every 5-6 days for Xiao Yao to hang out with him. It so happened to give Xiao Yao enough time to practice her archery from what he taught her in their last meeting. Though one time he disappeared for three months before suddenly showing up. Xiao Yao didn’t ask where he went and he didn’t offer an explanation. Xiao Yao knew their relationship where he taught her archery was just temporary and could end with any little mishap.
...
After they entered the residence, Xiao Yao jumped off her winged horse and sighed. “My version of the wild Princess is so different from Ah Nian’s. With the entire street staring at me, my first instinct is to wonder what I did wrong. Is this a side effect of doing too many bad things in my past?”
Fang Feng Bei asked half seriously half in jest, “Why don’t you not be a Princess anymore and go wander the world with me?”
Xiao Yao giggled. “Sure! If you can let everything go first.”
Fang Feng Bei chuckled while Xiao Yao stared at him. She felt like she called him on his bullshit. When she was wandering the world being a con artist, he was likely home tickling his maids!
-----
Chapter 19 (after FFB's identity as XL is confirmed, but before the 37 years of healing)
Xiao Yao asked, “Can you continue teaching me archery now?” What she really meant to ask was – are you not angry at me anymore?
Bei finished his wine. “I need to leave for a bit, wait for me to come back.”
Xiao Yao figured he was going back to Qing Shui town. Even if there was no active warfare, he was still the General of the Sheng Nong resistance army and there was much he had to do.
Xiao Yao couldn’t help it and sighed loudly and murmured, “If only you could forever be Fang Feng Bei, that would be so great.”
Bei appeared not to have heard her as he set down his wine cup and got up to leave, his form disappearing in the layers of curtains.
-----
Chapter 25:
Fang Feng Bei was riding a winged horse through the crowds, his expression gentle with a smile on his lips, just like any regular son of a rich family.
Xiao Yao was rooted in place and watched him come closer to her through the dense thrum of bustling ordinary life. Even knowing it was hopeless, she still fervently wished that this ordinary world could keep him in it.
-----
Chapter 29:
“Xiang Liu, I really don’t know, what is your heart thinking deep down inside?”
“You and I are travelers who have crossed paths in this windy world. Whenever we meet, we are each other’s companions to enjoy the world is all! Why do you care what I think deep down inside?”
-----
Chapter 32:
Xiao Yao sensed something but had to confirm it. “Where is Fang Feng Bei?”
Xiang Liu coolly replied, “He’s dead.”
Xiao Yao stared at Xiang Liu and her eyes were blinded in pain by his whiteness like a cloud and like the snow. Tears came to her eyes. Fang Feng Bei took her away and now Fang Feng Bei was dead and would never appear again. From now on, it was only Xiang Liu. That irresponsible man who did whatever he wanted, taught her archery, took her through the world seeking the simplest of pleasures… that man was now dead.
He once said that she and he were just temporary companions in this unpredictable life seeking happiness. He never lied to her!
