I don't know about ratings in Turkey, but on IMDB Siyah Biyaz Ask is rated a 9.3!!!!! ......Even Ezel is 8.5 ... Although that's amazing, my favorite Turkish dramas are rated in the 6's and Fatmagul is 5.5!! ..... One of the best written and best acted shows is a 5.5, so ratings don't mean much to me.
Siyah Biyaz Ask stands out due to the very clever dialogue, the witty banter, and dead-pan sense of humor.
It is also different b/c although the themes of what makes a person good and/or bad, or beauty & beast, etc..., are Very Trite , their take is refreshing and not cliched! ... This and the dialogue, make it stand out.
The romance development is reasonable, believable. The two leads match each other, complete one another. We feel the romance & Love, without a need for "cute" or "romantic" scenes of the couple.
Yes, Ferhat is very dark. It's bold to make a cold killer the romantic lead, but of course, he's also the most honorable, most clever, and kindest man in the show; all done in a very believable way for a complex character. .... He's not a true beast, so he's still likable to the audience. .... He's also made to be one of those bigger-than-life action heroes, to me that's a weakness of the show, but it's probably what audiences want.
The dead pan humor is the best!! Here's an example: she tells the waiter seating them "don't bother, he doesn't know about such things." Sitting, he replies "what don't I know?" She says "Pulling out a chair for a lady" , he, w/ a stone faced-expression " Then the lady will fall!" ........ Mwahahaha!
Another ex: She "Are you coming also?", he "into the surgery room, if necessary"..she grumbles "all I'm missing is a leash", he, without blinking, "it's on your finger". (they're married) ...LMAO!
@Orulyon --- yes, it seems much less cliched ... The show is not dark, only the hero :)
