I've been here for a few years and honestly I wasn't paying more attention to it.
I get that participating is doing something but that's because I couldn't find clear information that I opened that ticket.
Also some things seem possiblee only with maybe some points ... but I don't get it.

There are 2 types of points at the moment:
Karma points
Contribution points
Karma points are the points you get from being active on the site. However, this feature is still a beta feature. It is not completed yet, so it doesn't function properly for now. Also, the points are frozen for everyone currently. It should be available in version 7 of the site.
Contribution points (the ones you are referring to) are the points you get from submitting edits to titles and people pages. Basically, helping keep the database up to date. The points you get depend on how many changes you make per submission. You also get coins when you contribute and your submissions are approved, but those are based on the total pool of submissions every day.
Not sure what you mean by "some things seem possible only with maybe some points". It might be that the admins have implemented some limits so that people don't spam certain edit sections.

So the point under the profile picture 'when watching someones profile) are the karma points.
Those are still in a beta version at the moment.
And then contribution points are contribution points ... when helping with the database in some way.
Question : once I was trying to vote for tags and there is a pop up saying "You do not have enough of points to edit or cast vote." what is the system for this ? what points and how many points are required ?
