Summary of what happened in season 1 & 2. SPOILERS!

Alright so originally I started season 3 only having watched the first season a long time ago. Not wanting to miss out on fun references I watched both seasons to understand the story better. This summary is for myself to understand the story better but also to help others who either don't wanna watch the previous seasons or who have forgotten about it.

Spoilers ahead for seasons 1 and 2! Not all details are covered since this is a summary.

Season 1

Part 1. Their first life with Mo and Qu tribes in Magical Spirit Land (timeline/dimension 1)

So in their first life ML and FL are born in two different tribes in Magical Spirit Land. Female lead is born into the Qu tribe and Mo Lian Cheng is born into the Mo tribe. One day ML discovers her unconcious body and takes her into his care as a physician. He falls in love with her but when she wakes up she leaves without a word. He finds out she the successor of the tribeleader from the enemy Qu clan. He searches for her and confesses to her many times. Eventually they marry but she needs to kill people to stay in power which he doesn't like. So ML decides to stop her one day and in anger she kills him. She dies shortly after and regrets her murder. The friend of ML reffered to as ''Cold faced Mo'' discovers his body and saves his soul because he really likes his friend.

Part 2. Cold Faced Mo creates Dong Yue (timeline/dimension 1)

Cold Faced Mo then sets in motion all the events for season 1 to happen. He starts a kingdom called Dong Yue as the first king. He gets children and waits for the soul of his friend to recover while predicting the future events. One of the grandchildren is fit for the soul so the Cold Faced Mo basically removes the original soul and puts in the soul of ML. Making his friend his own grandchild (eight prince) weirdly enough. He uses the ''Seven Gathering Pill'' to make ML forget his memories but this will only last for 25 years.

So to make sure everything will happen smoothly he makes sure his grandchild ML/his friend marries Tan Er (the spirit of Qu tribeleader/his past life wife) and that he is aware he only has 25 years to live. He also leaves behind the Soul Suppressing Orb which the Qu family gains and only a few can touch.

Part 3. Season 1 start (timeline/dimension 1)

The story starts out in season 1 with Tan Er (female lead) from modern time China possessing the body of depressed girl Xiao Tan who lives in ''another dimension with similar aesthetic to ancient China'' in the country of Dong Yue. This Tan Er is the tribe leader of the Qu tribe but she has forgotten about all that since that was her previous life. The possession isn't complete as female lead and Xiao Tan share the same body and switch whenever she tells a lie. This is because in her previous life she never wanted to lie to ML again and regretted killing him.

Previously to this event depressed girl Xiao Tan was in love with Yi Huai who is the crown prince but she was forced into an arranged marriage with eight prince who is the male lead Mo Lian Cheng/Cheng Cheng/eight prince.

Part 4. The main original Dong Yue storyline (timeline/dimension 1)

At first things don't go well between them. She wants to divorce him and constantly switches characters so many think she has gone insane. ML suspects she may be a spy for his brother the crown prince too. Eventually she falls into the water from an assassination attempt and almost dies. ML saves her thanks to Fast Elder with a ''Life and Death pact'' with which they basically die if either of them dies.

Xiao Tan depressed girl gets the impression her crush Yi Huai never loved her and gets more depressed. However the crown prince does really love her and is very jealous of ML. ML finds out about the two souls in the body of female lead and they learn to trust each other more. ML gets shot with an arrow in his chest.

Eventually the crown prince becomes influenced by the evil demon king. The Qu clan has been trying to keep the Demon King from escaping and that was also why the Fast Elder helped Tan Er since he knew she was the Qu tribe leader. They need the Orb and the Wandering Soul Flute to keep the Demon King sealed. Female lead absorbs the Orb when the crown prince tries to get it. Eventually the evil influenced crown prince attacks Female Lead again and seperates the souls of Tan Er and depressed girl Xiao Tan. Depressed girl Xiao Tan sacrifices her life to protect Tan Er from an attack and dies still loving the crown prince. Evil influenced crown prince dies a bit later without ever realising he killed his own crush.

Tan Er and ML get a child called Yu'Er but the child is weak and Tan Er is never allowed to touch her own son. Eventually they make preparations to leave a good home for the son before they die at the 25 year deadline. They instead get teleported to the Magical Spirit Land, leaving their first son Yu'Er behind forever in this timeline.

Part 5. The Magical Spirit Land adventures of the final (timeline/dimension 1)

They both arrive in the spirit land and are captured by the Mo clan. ML recognises his grandfather/Cold Faced Mo who is basically the white-haired version of his brother. ML forgets all his memories of his 25 years in Dong Yue to regain his original memories. ML first dislikes FL for being the new life of his old murderous wife but does still have a soft spot for her. He regains his 25 year memories through a dangerous way and almost dies so they have to bring him to special healing water. There the demon king awaits them.

The FL succeeds in stopping the demon king with her flute skills and the Orb she contains but they are seperated into different worlds. According to the ending they meet again in the modern world. This is the end of season 1.

Season 2

Part 6. Season 2 starts in the modern world but soon goes to a new Dong Yue (timeline/dimension 2)

Male lead is teleported into a different dimension which looks like modern China, he searches Tan Er for 1 year. He finds out this is the world where Tan Er didn't teleport to him in Dong Yue yet and she has no memories of him. He tries to romance her but they eventually fall off a cliff. This triggers another journey to Dong Yue.

This time Tan Er again possesses the body of depressed girl Xiao Tan but they don't switch anymore. ML gets physically teleported to the past with all his memories intact and looks for her. He finds her and with the help of Fast Elder he disguises himself as another person since a past version of him is also in this timeline. His goals are basically to romance Tan Er again and to keep his brother crown prince alive this time.

Eventually past ML finds out about future ML and they actually befriend each other. However, future MLs senses get worse every time he touches someone from his bloodline/his past self. So eventually ML gets bad eyesight and even dies. Fast Elder saves his soul and uses the ''Life and Death pact'' to merge him with future ML. The crown prince intends to use the Orb for evil stuff again so ML stops him. The crown prince doesn't die in this timeline but goes insane since his crush is gone. ML and Tan Er are together again and get a second son also named Yu'Er again. This Yu'Er has absorbed the Orb power and Fast Elder warns them that evil people will target them.

Season 3 start

Part 7. Season 3 starts (timeline/dimension 3)

Tang Er and ML are emperor and empress now of Dong Yue in timeline/dimension 2. They get into that discussion about gender roles and the evil forces trigger the Orb which sends them into a new dimension of Dong Yue with different gender roles.

This time Tan Er remembers everything and ML has amnesia. He remembers Tan Er whenever a reference is made to previous seasons and he forgets everything of his previous life the moment he kisses Tan Er. Which happens a lot. So this time it's Tan Er who tries to romance ML. Here there is also an empress who looks exactly like Tan Er and she is suspicious of Tan Er and ML trying to disrupt her power.
