Okay so I'm putting the part 2 of my og comment here since it was requested (contains spoilers for the ending), here u go:
Throughout the show, Zhao Yuanzhou's character was always described as morally gray. This will be an attempt to try nd explain why that might be the case, how it connects to the overall story nd what it signifies for the ending.
We all know that ZYZ is kind, but kind doesnt mean fair, morally upright or just. He has always struck me as the type who cares more about reasons over consequences. Even if its a serial murderer, he'd prolly let them go if he finds their feelings or reasonings valid nd if they decide not to do it again, even if it means being unfair or unjust to the victims. Like the case with ran yi, even li lun, if he cultivated for 100 years nd turned over a new leaf, zyz wud prolly forgive nd become friends again. Its also why he had no semblance of grudge or even annoyance towards bai jiu, coz not only is he younger nd more inexperienced than his fingernail, but he also empathized with him, so he nicely explained what happened instead of being mad. This i believe is largely shaped by his own experience of having to deal with unintented consequences, he's so torn up over the results of his own malicious energy controlled actions, that he gives a lot of leeway to consequences of every other kind if the emotions behind it feels valid to him. In short, what i mean is, even if the end result is horrible, the intent behind it meant more to him than what happened coz of it.
Now here's how it ties to the story, the drama has been focusing a lot on choices nd consequences, but over all of it is an inexplicable hold of fate. Zhuo Yichen once said its like a book with a prewritten ending, u can read over nd over but the ending never changes. So ultimately, it looks like yinglongs prophecy came true once again, history repeated itself, cycle of tragedy continues, ending remained the same. But did it really? Doesn't it somehow look like fate is 'correcting' itself? It took thousands of years but if u consider the tragedy with yinglong nd bingyi, they were the 2 great ancient demons protecting the world, due to some mishap one had to die nd they were such a pair that if one goes, the other goes too. Bcoz of that, the 2 great protectors were both basically gone. Bingyi created a bloodline to pass on his duty nd sword to them coz he couldnt bear to do it alone forever. Nd the malicious energy been choosing a new vessel that wud suffer yinglongs fate ever since. Later the history of demons nd in turn, their subsequent futures got altered negatively nd stuck in a cycle of tragedy. ZYZ suffered so much torment over the years due to bearing a fate he never wanted nd sought death under the bingyi clans sword to end it all. But, throughout the show we saw 2 major things happening, zyz coming alive bcoz of wen xiao, nd zyc being forced to walk zyz's road. (Both of which affected not just those 2 but also the way zyz saw his own life. Sometimes u cant get over ur self hate nd loathing without seeing it happening thru a different perspective i.e, of ur loved ones. In fiercely protecting zyc during his demonization, in encouraging wx to live nd fight for her life, he was essentially having a different angle to view his own situations, even if he didnt notice it consciously)
This trio, its like destiny connected them this way to fix the cycle. Yinglong despite having every chance to come back, didnt do so coz he didnt have a tether, nothing for which he'd come back for. Despite ZYZ's soul being extracted the same way, the difference is that he has a tether, he did NOT want to die, nor did he have to sacrifice his will to live, thus he wud be willing to come back coz his reason for living still exists in the world. Wen xiao existed to ignite the suppressed emotions nd passions that would make him alight with life nd seek to live. She was the catalyst, his first anchor, the one grounding him nd tying him to the world. Her love for him made him love the world not just as an outsider but as a living breathing part of it who also deserves to exist in it nd be loved equally for it.
Meanwhile yichen's journey involved so much parallel nd forced reconstruction of his lifestyle that it feels like fate had him exist to understand ZYZ, nd not just an understanding born outta feelings of love or sympathy, but the kind of thorough understanding that only comes with actually experiencing the same equivalent road. Fate rebuilt him in a way so that he takes up the position bingyi once did by yinglongs side (as a greater demon as he was originally meant to be, thus reforming the long lost pair), so that they can develop similar feelings towards eo nd make the same choices again due to their one of a kind bond.
So as we have the story, the ending remained the same, their choices remained the same, they all chose the greater good but the difference was that this time they also chose each other. They loved each other enough to promise to live together in different variations of it nd each chose their burdens in a way that'd actually allow them to do so, undoing the toxic cycle they've been stuck in since the time of their ancestors. Much like ZYZ's core belief in intents making all the difference despite the tragic outcomes, the show's predetermined ending failed to mean the same bcoz of the feelings of the people involved in it. Almost like if the story itself were a character, it'd be embodying ZYZ's philosophy; making him the truly perfect protagonist for the show. The past nd present came full circle with ZYZ's soul finding its way back to his loved ones nd altho destiny remained looking the same as ever, everything in it, including their potential futures changed, thus subtly reversing nd altering what was always thought to be irreversible and absolute.

Honestly you lost me there. Sounds like an attempt at putting what ZYZ did and what BJ did on the same scale. They're not even close. ZYZ massacring people wasn't intentional. It's not that he did something that resulted in unintended consequences. It's that he practically didn't do it. It wasn't his intention, nor was it his action.
What BJ did to ZYZ was truly evil and fully intentional. He knew he was poisoning ZYZ. He knew the details of the torture ZYZ would go though. He didn't care. Because ZYZ was a big demon and he didn't like him.
ZYZ didn't hold a grudge (not that he was even apologized to) because he cared about the brat. Doesn't mean he wasn't hurt. He visibly was. It's just that he's used to put his life bellow the other members. Still that doesn't excuse the rest of the gang doing the same.
Hi sana, since u asked I'll try to explain where I was going with it again. Its not abt what it seems like to us but it's abt the way I felt zyz sees the world. He's v lenient on others while being v strict on himself, he easily forgives others but hates himself to the point of being suicidal. Nd i believed its coz the first is tied to the 2nd. That why I said he's so torn up over his own experience that he gives everyone else a lot of leeway even if they deserve to get punished, its not just coz of his kindness but also in part of his own experience nd guilt, other people saying he didnt do it isn't gonna make him forget washing the blood off his own hands, it doesn't matter what we think, its what he himself feels.
Ofc he cared a lot abt baijiu, but baijiu was scared of him, he also thought zyz wud hurt him if he caught him which is why he immediately sprinted in fright the moment he saw zyz standing in his house, he went into the team knowing zyz was a great demon he cannot trust nd was sent to seal for the greater good. Not even just baijiu, every example I gave, all of them were fully aware of what they were doing, ran yi killed innocent brides nd people, li lun killed who knows how many, all innocent uninvolved parties, but zyz wasn't gonna hold any of them accountable even if they didnt take responsibility for it nd just mended their ways. They don't have to be controlled like he was, he just had to find their emotions behind it valid nd be convinced that they won't do it again.
I dont wanna go into a baijiu analysis rn but i think its also bcoz of all his misguided ideas, he wanted to save his mom nd was taught all he learnt from wen zongyu, he believed a demon killed his mom, demons r the big bad nd that his dad contributed or helped in killing his mom, so he fully trusted the only reliable adult he had in his life which was his teacher. He was groomed nd v easy nd convenient to manipulate. Until he actually learnt abt his mom nd noticed his entire life nd all assumptions were a lie, he didnt think what he was doing was entirely wrong despite feeling conflicted. Nd knowing wen zongyu, zyz understood baijius thought process nd what happened right away when he heard abt his mom, so he took part in explaining what really happened. He finished wen xiaos sentence saying the one at fault wasn't this easily manipulated little bunny. When he first found out, he looked visibly surprised nd sad but later he looked a mixture of fond nd exasperated. Nd the entire time bai jiu didn't even look at him, even while saying sorry nd I felt it was coz he still felt scared of him, now in addition to the added guilt nd weight of having wronged him the way he did. Way back during first or 2nd episode too, when he felt scared of him he wasn't meeting his gaze nd just sat straight. I honestly found it pretty sad that while zyz had always been messing with him nd trying to impress him coz he adored him so much, turns out the fear baijiu displayed wasnt just for comic relief but also somewhat real considering he never truly seemed comfortable around zyz alone.
Anyway thats not the point, point was that zyz wud even let serial killers go if he understood them nd if they stopped doing it. Both of which applied to baijiu, zyz understood him nd baijiu showed he turned around by carving out his tattoo. The post was talking abt why zyz does what he does, not what baijiu or everyone else should or shouldnt have done. It wasnt abt baijiu.
Hi. Thank you for explaining. It makes sense if it's from ZYZ's point of view.
But about serial killers, are we sure he'd give them leeway? He might not have actively hunted them before joining the bureau. But if he's involved in a clear situation, we know which side he'd help. Like with Li Lun, he interfered. And despite finding his punishment cruel, didn't object or try to free him.

Hi, back then in Li lun's case, neither of the 2 conditions were fulfilled. He was on an ongoing, indiscriminate killing spree, they had a massive misunderstanding which only kept getting worse, ZYZ couldn't get thru to him at all nd neither did li lun show any signs or intentions of stopping, so the baizhe goddess had to seal him nd he helped her do so coz obviously she cant fight him.
I strongly agree - and about the change of the cycle (and the fact that people remember the great demon as a savior this time, also as a symbol that they managed to change something). And about ZYZ. Yuanzhou is such an interesting example of a morally gray hero not because of ambition, but because of love.
He is used to experiencing love as something that just happens to him, a stream that carries him. And the theme with the swing describes it well. He does not like to control. He likes to be loved and live in harmony with the one he loves. But when this harmony is destroyed, he falls into helplessness and loses control over his emotions.
He literally begins his journey by entrusting his life and death into the hands of another person.
But then, thanks to his found family, he learns to realize love more consciously, to cope with conflicts and contradictions (and I think the fact that his new love starts from the most conflicting situation also works for this).
To the point where he is willing to risk ZYC's life by killing the main villain - not because he is willing to sacrifice his life for the greater good, but because he truly understands what is the best decision for ZYC.
