Sex & the City: Wine, Men & Song

While not one of my go-to US shows, Sex & the City immediately summons a few common elements: girl squads, love, sex, careers, drinks, and fashion. I've yet to find another title that connects these better, and we probably won't.

Here's a list of dramas that definitely check the majority of these boxes:

  • Girl squad goals and sismance (usually with professional women beyond high school/college) but a few loners, too
  • Bonding/commiserating over drinks at a favorite watering hole
  • Multiple couples with romantic subplots
  • Questionable romantic choices and their fallout, whether the choice of the FLs or their partners (affairs, etc)
  • A level of content maturity in romantic themes (sexually mature relationships, one-night stands, divorce/separation, parenting, etc)
    • Honorable mention: feminine sexual independence: Female characters who are free to have sexual relations or to explore more than one partner without being "punished" by the plot (i.e., not perceived as loose or a villain, not just for a pregnancy/forced marriage  subplot, no tragic ending). Japanese dramas are particularly good at this concept in their mature female-oriented dramas

All these titles have some elements of the above. If you're adverse to alcohol or potential infidelity/affairs, be sure to check out those drama tags before watching!
