  • Little Forest: Summer & Autumn

    2. Little Forest: Summer & Autumn

    Japanese Movie - 2014

    10

A feel good movie that screams "simplicity" in the most subdued manner. It is not like any other movie with a distinct plot (and/or climax); there is no real tension, conflict or heartbreaking moment. However, this lacklustre aspect of the film is exactly its charm. Its neat structure and themes take you into the everyday lives of those in the countryside. Coupled with the beautifully shot farming and cooking scenes, wholesome relationships and just the simple pleasures of life, it leaves you in the most tranquil state of mind; just like a pond with no ripples.

  • Her Love Boils Bathwater

    4. Her Love Boils Bathwater

    Japanese Movie - 2016

    10

A heart wrenching film with broken characters that had loved, lost, or ran away. What I liked about this film was the focus on the relationships between the characters - how they were all broken in some way but started to heal together as a family as they face their pasts.

  • Dance Subaru

    5. Dance Subaru

    Japanese Movie - 2009

    9.5

This movie has a special place in my heart. Having been a dancer for half of my life, the emotions, relationship between the characters and of course, dance immensely resonated with me.

  • Our Little Sister

    8. Our Little Sister

    Japanese Movie - 2015

Once again, Koreeda Hirokazu did not disappoint. A feel good, slice of life movie that focuses on human relationships. It takes its time in character development to portray real life emotions and situations; full of potent mixed feelings.  Nothing is dramatised - as it mirrors what life is like for the common folk; nondescript and subdued emotions filled with insecurities and doubts.

  • Sweet Bean

    9. Sweet Bean

    Japanese Movie - 2015

    8.5

Another film that takes its time in its character development. The relationships between the characters are thoughtfully built throughout the film; leaving you with a sense of attachment before you realise it.
