Born in South Africa in 1949 (his ancestral home is in Shunde, Guangdong, China), Lawrence attended secondary school in Hong Kong and spent his university years at the University of Southern California's film department, where he earned a Master of Fine Arts degree. He returned to Hong Kong in the late 1970s, serving as assistant director on Tsui Hark's film "Butterfly Murders" (蝶变). He subsequently joined the drama department of Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) as a writer and director.
