Lee Sang Woo is a South Korean director, screenwriter, and actor. His first feature-length screenplay "James and Marin" won an Encouragement Award at the 1994 Film Promotion Committee Screenplay Competition. After this success he moved to the United States where he graduated from the University of California, Berkeley's Film Studies program in 2002. He has submitted various works at the San Francisco Korean Film Festival and the American Student Film Festival, and he has made documentaries and experimental films.

After returning to Korea, he collaborated with South Korean director Kim Ki-duk's on "Breath" and then majored in film at Yonsei University's Graduate School of Communication.

After his first feature film "Tropical Manila" (2008) was shown at the Rotterdam Film Festival he began to attract attention abroad.
