After completing his education at Minano Junior High School in March 1989, Shitara graduated from Saitama Prefectural Chichibu Nogei High School with a degree in mechanical engineering in March 1992. Following a brief stint at Seibu Railway, he entered the entertainment industry. His early career included roles such as a station attendant at Ikebukuro Line's Oizumi Station and various odd jobs before pursuing comedy.
In April 1999, Shitara married his longtime partner, whom he had met through work at a young age. They have a daughter together.
Shitara's career expanded into acting, making his debut as a lead actor in the 2010 film "Judge! How Would You Sentence Me to Four Years in Prison?" Additionally, in 2012, he ventured into directing with the final episode of his comedy partner Himura Yuki's drama "Irodori Himura."
