Hei Mei is a Chinese actress born in Qingdao, Shandong, China. In 1988, she graduated from Qingdao Conservatory of Music. Because of her dark skin tone when young, she was nicknamed "Hei Mei", which she later adopted as her stage name.

At the end of 1988, she won third prize in the National 20 Cities OK Tape "Pegasus Cup" Singing Competition. Her acting stint began in 1989 with a lead role in the musical drama "The Marriage Proposal" (征婚启示). In 1990, she won the Outstanding Actress Award at the National Opera Festival of the Ministry of Culture. In 1991, she won the Best Actress Award at the Shanghai Magnolia Performing Arts Awards.

Since then, she has won several arts and acting awards including the Third Prize for Performance at the 1993 6th All-Army Arts Festival, the 1998 "Yili Cup" My Favorite Spring Festival Program Selection - Second Prize, First Place, and the Golden Lion Award for Best Actress for "Absurd" Couple" (“荒诞”夫妻) in 2003, and the "Outstanding Supporting Actress" at the 2015 Second Wushan Goddess Cup Art Film Week for "Wolf is Coming" (守信少年).

In 2022, she won two awards, namely, the Best Actress in Foreign Language Feature Films at the Broadstas International Film Festival for "Hot Mom and Stubborn Dad" (辣妈犟爸), and the Best Actress at the 9th Asian Micro Film Art Festival Golden Begonia Award for "Travelling Together" (一路同行).
