Wang Tao is a Taiwanese actor born in Andong, Liaoning, China. He is the son of filmmaker Wang Chieh. During his first year of middle school, he moved to Italy with his father. After completing high school, he transferred to Texas A&M University in the United States to study civil engineering, partly to be closer to his mother. His father encouraged him to practice Taekwondo, which later influenced his career in action films.

While in university, he was discovered by Shaw Brothers Studio and signed a three-year acting contract. His debut film, "The Yellow-Faced Tiger", was released in 1974.

In 1978, he married and had four daughters.
