So.. another transmigrating drama? Can someone explain to me how the chinese industry works, does someone pick A Thing and send it out there asking for everyone to make that thing so we get torrents of them? Anyways, on EP1 but someone tell me what im watching out of a clear avoidance of rewatching Nanyan Archives π
Well i might be talking to myself at this point, but I finished it and 10/10 from me - for sweetness and randomness. We used to have shows like this way back in Dicky Cheung and Stephen Chow times, but it's been a very long time since someone threw a show like this out there (maybe the pandemic killed all the joy in life). For caricatures, everyone did their parts well and I'd say at least half the supporting cast are veterans now and for me, having seen them in the latest popular dramas, I'd say they werent off the mark even those few years ago. It's also pretty interesting you can tell they didnt skimp on the budget for set pieces if you only paid attention - no one goes and make 20 (i counted) fake clouds in a palace court on the last EP, when they run out of money on projects. Meaning someone deliberately ask for "super fake idiot looking clouds... Lots of them". π Like i said before, shows like this, you've gotta pay attention or the joke is on you. This is not a show for you if humour means something like A Dream within a Dream. If you want How Dare You on steroids and #nofilter while everyone looks like they're just at a huge theatre party, this is it. Sometimes the plot is actually a huge party (for episodes on end), complete with emojis on the screen, so bring the wine. Wish we had more of these, hope the ratings and viewerships go up eventually - we all need some Monty Python humour in our lives.
Anyone who calls this overacting has never seen slapstick in their life. Anyways, it's good fodder for anyone who doesnt take things seriously, and the best part, is the show obviously doesnt take itself seriously too - "if you're going to say something then say it, what's up with the background musicians?", pretty much sums up the vibe here.
Ok so I finally finished it and man, everyone from the director to the cameraman to the actors must've just pulled in their MVP effort to appease the bosses. The only saving grace is literally Shenzen the city itself - thank you for your skyscraper service. It's kind of an understatement to say it's bad - the editing is so bad that a YT amateur on minimum wage wouldve done a better job than have people's frames be cut AND jutter mid sentence, not to mention the Director and Jackson probably were collectively asleep when theyre threw trash (plastic AND a sim card) in the toilets right next to the Do Not Litter toilet signs. (I am saying this purely out of respect for Flying Daggers.) And the MSS didnt fine them for breaking the law when they signed off the movie? πCome on. I could go on and on.. even the stellar cast could not save it, the acting felt dry and well I wouldnt care either, if someone was planning to cut me (and my face) off mid sentence. Poor Yang Mi was pretty much reduced to leg service (because yoga means "foreign tourist", and I'm not even her fan!) and promptly shot dead (probably to her relief). Contrary to other movies (even b grade dramas), ZYL did NOT give it his best shot - the grimaces in the script were authentic though π. The best acting was with LSS, but mostly because she had maybe four words all up and was told to "just cry". We do always love a LSS crying face. Im not even kidding when I say, had MSS spent the money on a well made doco, it would've been more interesting than this.
I didnt think I'd like it given the topic and low ratings but after 3 eps im hooked. If it keeps going like this, the Best Director award is definitely well deserved - it's obvious it's the story telling and crew behind the scenes is what drives this show.
The worst part is us fans of the wider series now knows we spent six(?) years of our lives on aliens... And not…
Never read the novel but there's multiple shows where strange happenings are explained through "meteorite hallucinations" and similar "scientific phenomena" e.g. weird plants, probably due to censorship. I get it if in Xu's head it's always been aliens, and he was censored but it's just really annoying after so many years of scientific explainaways only to end up here.
It's an ending clearly for us who's seen the other 10+ (ok i may be jking here) related shows in the same series, complete with character cameos. Which is probably why there's all the mixed comments below. Personally, it completely changed the premise for all the other shows so the betrayal feels real. π (I note you're from the US - it's like, if you watched all the episodes of Supernatural or Buffy from the beginning of time, and then they told you it was aliens.)
Ok finished watching. Just want to say Haixia must be so lonely along the journey π the Xia of his name being…
The worst part is us fans of the wider series now knows we spent six(?) years of our lives on aliens... And not some "scientific anomaly" of "ancient rites" that Mr Xu sold us so many years ago.
I need them to release the alternative ending.... This doesn't work for me. I prefer whichever I saw in the leaks'…
I am sure the main creators would argue that the rest of the story is in every other show they ever made.. fair but this was the most brutal for us fans of the whole series.

I dont even know why I use spoiler tags here anymore.

Jkjk..
I mean, I'm not complaining but just curious π
